new assembly experience... what do you reckon to this one?
by purrpurr inok so aparently there was this young girl who wanted to study with the jw's because she loved the bible so much.
she asked her fathers permission but he refused, after much nagging though he said she could have a study if she was prepared to have one of her fingers chopped off.
he thought the is would stop her but she was willing so he got a knife and cut off one of her fingers... a little while later she wanted to attend the meetings and he said no and again when nagged said she could attend meetings if she had another finger chopped off so she agreed and he chopped off a second finger.

Why did Jehovah Forbid Using the Kingdom Hall as A Social Community Center?
by scotoma inobviously he didn't.. so now they can because the dictators say it's ok.. and jw's think their religion isn't a high control group?.

You know I have always wondered why they have no congragation planned social activities or groups etc. It always has to come down to indivuals within the congregation to organise anything social. I came to the conclusion it was that they as an organisation didn't want to be in anyway responsible if something went wrong. They are happy to leave it up to the individuals to sort out social events etc and let them take the flack if something were to happen.
I look at the church over the road from us and think how nice it is that they have so many social things going on in their community hall. Coffee mornings, play group for toddlers, family fun days etc. as well as all the useual churchy stuff. Not that I want to join that church or anyother just to me it makes sense to have church based social events and include everyone instead of just all the silly, stuck up, little clicks that form within the kingdom hall or to be fair any large group really, meaning people are getting left out because they don't fit in.
This topic was one of the things that got me thinking, especially when I saw the video's online of people having a flipping hoedown on the platform for the delegates at the recent international convention in the USA. It really threw me and I thought well why is this acceptable now when I know for a fact it was extremely frowned open to even let your child climb up on the platform after the meeting (well it is here in the UK anyway, people were always getting told off for not controlling their kids better lol.) Talk about a complete Uturn!
I really detest this religion sorry I mean cult! The more I find out the more I can't believe I was part of it for so long.

How to make the most of wife not going to service meeting?
by FadeToBlack inout of the blue, my wife told me that after this week's service meeting on friday (co visit) she is not going to anymore meetings during the week at night.
only sunday (am) meetings.
she explained that it is difficult and not safe for her to drive after dark (vision issues: i have the same problem so i couldn't help her if i wanted to).

Yes def do something and spend some really nice, quality time together. Spoil her - I know that always works with me :) (sorry no good at suggesting things!)
Also do you have a telephone link or Skype link up to the meeting? Our local hall does so you want to make sure she is otherwise occupied so it wont even cross her mind to listen in to the meeting that way.
Hope all goes well for and this is just the start of something....

How did the term "The Truth" come about?
by FeelingFree ini just wondering how this vile term came to be used in constant referral to the org, i really, really hate it!
it's only since coming out that i have realised how much the jdubs use it.
everything is the truth this and the truth that.

Hmmm all very interesting, thank you for all the comments. It makes sense that it would relate to those scriptures. Being a born in myself I find I actually lack a lot of knowledge on most things JW related. I just coasted along and never really researched or looked into much which I now find highly embarrasing and am quite ashamed by, but think it must explain how I managed to stay in so long.....
Juan Viejo2 I was very interested to read your comment and it's a good point you made about them being members of the "Christian Congregation of JWs" and not actually declaring themselves to be an actual individual Christian.
OneEyedJoe It is just such an arrogant thing to say. I hadn't realised or thought about it being used by other cults but it makes sense.
As I have never had the pleasure (hah) of conducting a study I wonder if it gets refered to as the truth when your bringing a person in? If it was me studying I think I would find that most offputting, arrogant and offensive.

Everything is the truth this and the truth that. When talking to my JW friend earlier this week I accidentally called it that as she was having a preaching session at me and I had to correct myself. I felt dirty afterwards!
Has it always been used for as long as you can remember? It's so culty (if thats a word?!)

For us we really started off in different places. I was fed up for years and we would have conversations where I would lay down all my issue's with the religion but he, though open to discussion still really believed in it. Then one day this year he came across the NGO crap and that led him down a very intense period of reading and research, something that I had never bothered with as I never felt the need to. He got very angry and kept telling me all these things that he had found out and for some reason that scared me I guess my inner cultist came out!
We had lots of arguments about it and how I felt he should just stop looking at things and leave it alone. At this point we were both going through the motions with the meetings etc and it wasn't until the convention that I said we should just leave and never go back, he agreed and that's exactly what we have done! I think I just couldn't believe how much was really wrong with the organisation I was bought up in, even though I had my issue's they were mainly to do with family experiences within the org.
Now we are both really interested in what's going on and keeping up with things and I think that's mainly as it just confirm's and reassures us that we have made the right decission. Plus it can be used as ammo if needed when relatives bring these things up! I feel that he is definately more angry than me about wasting his life etc. I just think well that's what we chose at the time, we didn't have all the facts and our life wasn't awful. But I understand why he would feel that way.

Like Button
by Coded Logic ini read through the suggestion box and haven't seen anyone recomend this yet: is it possilbe to add a "like" button for posts and comments?
maybe something that keeps count of them like on youtube.
i think it would be a great tool to let people know we appreciate their comments.. i know we have the thumbs up icon we can paste in our comments but its hard to "like" someones elses comment when the thread is already 30 comments deep.. (feel free to thumbs up if this is a feature you'd like to see).

"You never made Jehovah REAL to you"
by Black Man inthat was a statement from my dyed-in-the-wool jw pioneer mother in trying to analyze why i faded and left the jws.
my answer was to say: "if i have to make something real to me, chances are it wasn't real to begin with.

Hehe Phizzy I like your reply!
Black Man - Me and my husband have been told this by his mum too. Also that we don't have faith or we wouldn't be in our current situation. I dont really understand how that applies to us ..... but some of the things people have said to us can be pretty hurtful and I have a hard time trying to let go of such comments, even though I know it just churned out, bog standard, brain wash crap. At the end of the day we are all a lot better off than those suckers still in JW land as we know the REAL TRUTH.

Meet The Mormons, in Theaters now
by designs inthe lds church has a slick new documentary out now- meet the mormons.
http://meethtemormons.com huffington post etc... huffington post described it as slick, light on doctrine, and presenting a public face that you wouldn't find if you walked into a typical lds church.. i wonder how far behind the new jw.org think tank guys are on developing their own film for theater release.. .

We had that shown on T.V over here in the UK. It's really rather good. Me and my husband watched it with my dad and felt a bit awkward as they are just so similar to JW's with a few obvious difference's. Think it made my dad feel a bit uncomfortable though!
If you want to watch it you can get it on channel4.com they have a catch up services called 4OD. Probably only available to watch for UK resisdents though. If you can see get to see it, it's def worth it.
Here is the link - www.channel4.com/programmes/meet-the-mormons/4od
For some reason I cant link it properly because FireFox wont let me.
