  fisher: The outrage that was being expressed about the RCC was that their ministers were the ones being accused of engaging in child abuse without being censured by the church -NOT THE PARISHIONERS confessing sins.

  You bring up a salient point.

  In the Catholic Church, the focus is on the priests who abuse children. The priests - the ones in charge of the congregation.

  In the JWs, the child abuse is being committed by, not only the "ministers", but by the membership themselves. The child abuse is systemic within the entire congregation, not just the clergy class.

  You are certainly right that there is a difference - the JWs' problem is more far reaching than the Catholic Church - it concerns all the congregants in addition to the clergy.

  fisher: The church cannot exist with mandatory reporting. At least if the state enforces it or if the church starts calling the cops - goodbye charlle.

  Mandatory reporting is in place for one purpose and one purpose only.

  To PROTECT CHILDREN.

  The rest of society doesn't give a shit if the "sinner" gets absolution from their church. The rest of society puts the welfare of children above the welfare of a church.

  Any "church" that promotes secrecy about child abuse does not deserve to receive recognition in our culture. It should not be called a church when it is a haven for criminals that harm children.

  a church elder who sexually abused vulnerable children was invited to speak at his first victim’s wedding, a court heard.. a court was told harry holt, 71, now of rutland street, nelson, went on to attack seven more girls as young as nine after the jehovah’s witnesses failed to report him to police.when the matter was raised, a local beat officer advised parents to ‘just keep your children away from him’, the court heard.. holt is facing a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of attacks against eight girls in scotland dating back over 40 years.. .

  You are exactly right - we do not know what a person is really like until we meet them behind closed doors. And sometimes not even then.

  Yes, lots of churches have missions. Nothing new.

  In fact, the newcomers on the block are the JWs. It kills me when JWs come out with "we are the only ones who preach!!!!"

  Mission work had been going on for centuries before the Johnny Come Lately JWs showed up on the scene.

  finkelstein: For decades this organization has been doing this very thing and even pointed its finger at the Catholics for doing so.

  They still are. Note fisherman's last post.

  Rather than address a defect in the JW's, he conveniently gave a link to the Catholic Church's issues.

  Yeah, I laugh every time another article comes out about a JW being a pedophile and the 'official' response is always the same lying rhetoric. It reminds me of asking a kid if they ate the last piece of cake and they say "no" when they have chocolate icing all over their face.
