Digital photography. It captures and translates light weirdly - differently than the human camera, the eye, does. Odd shapes are common. This one is a purse/backpack.

Another reason why the JWs in the congregations are being quiet.
They have been told to be quiet. Don't say anything.
They are being investigated.
What do you think the Watchtower lawyers have told them to do? Without question, the WT legal team will be all over this. They need to be. A coroner's investigation will have the WT lawyers buzzing around the hive

Steel: I am serious.
Is it kind of an unofficial rule to not talk about the deaths? Or is it just my hall.I don't know. I am nowhere near a hall. Never will be.
But, I appreciate your observation. This case has rarely left my mind since it happened.
I think the JWs might be in a bit of shock. Shock that not one but two mothers so close to each other. Shock that the miracles of bloodless surgery and alternatives promised them by the HLC didn't work.
And shame. Shame that the whole world is looking at them. Looking at them and wondering - wondering how...how could Eloise's husband, the JW family and friends, her own mother, - the woman who had given her life..whose blood, her own blood, had covered her at birth - how could they tend her bedside during those horrible, long days - 6 days and nights - and not once, not one of them...reach out their arm and say - "Here, take mine. She has done her duty - she has fulfilled her promise to Jehovah. She is in need. I will do it - I will take it for her - the sin of the blood that I am told not to give. Christ gave his blood and so will I"
At the point that this young mother was no longer conscious, she lost her ability to give consent. And the JWs in that room could have still acknowledged her sincere belief, and stepped up to the plate to save her life. But they didn't. Why? Because they were told not to. Or it would be them that would lose their chance at paradise. They stood fast so they would get saved.
I have a daughter around the same age as Eloise. My daughter is pregnant. We share the same blood type. And I wouldn't hesitate to stretch out my arm and let my life blood drip into her veins. To keep my baby and hers alive. And I could even do it in that continuous loop that the JWs have been told to do - directly from me to her. Easily.
Elosie's death was not only needless, as well as Mirlande's death ten days previous, but both deaths were shameful. A shame to all of the JWs at your hall and all involved in this. They should be quiet. They should be thinking about what they did and would do if it was them. They should be thinking about their loved ones, wondering if they, too, would follow the WT or would follow their heart.

What Comes After the Watchtower Collapse?
by schnell ini was going to put this in my thread about pyramid schemes, but i thought it's discreet enough to warrant its own.
1) there are many faithful jws.
2) there are many men and women who could take control and fill the void if the watchtower collapses.

I think their plan is to eventually become strictly an online religion.
The WT's interests lie elsewhere. The "Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses" is a millstone around their neck. It only serves to give them tax free status. For now.
Take away their tax free status and it will be sink or swim for the religion. But the WTS will survive. Quite well, likely. It is an octopus - the religion is only one arm

Watchtower Policy Makes Informed Consent Improbable
by Lee Elder inwatchtower misinformation on blood, coupled with coercion equals undue influence, and makes informed consent nearly impossible for most jw's in life or death situations.

SlidinFast: The good thing is that the issue is no longer whether blood transfusion is good or bad. Now the spotlight has shifted to the HLC involvement and the pressure exerted on patients that become victims.
Encouraging coverage.Absolutely.
This story is not going away.
I am glad that Bethany's father is involved. I remember when Bethany died and I was so upset at the time. I have often thought about her father, knowing how devastated he had been and how badly he was treated by the WTS. It is good that he isn't silent.
I have a feeling there is more yet to come. A lot more. This story is just getting legs. It should break into a jog pretty soon
Thanks for posting this, Lee

Why Is it the Girls who Hang in There?
by snugglebunny inhaving seen many, many people leave the org over the years, i have to say that, when it comes to married couples, it's almost always the man who makes the first move to leave.
conversely, when it comes to being converted into the witnesses, more often than not it's the wife who joins up first.
although that wasn't the case with my own parents, my father became converted and my mother followed very reluctantly..

steve: If only women could get "a sense of empowerment" from religious devotion! In fact, religion legitimates women's subservience to male patriarchal beliefs - which is anything but empowering. Religion robs women of power and as consolation prizes gives them a sense of being looked after and taken care of.
I know. It is a delusion, isn't it?
crazyguy: I think if it wasn't for woman there would of never been an organized religious group, ever
Lol! Now that is funny. Religion is simply a cultural phenomena - it exists. And it isn't women's fault! Lol! Too funny...it must have been the apple, huh?

VI: I'm thinking about religiosity in general including liberal churches. They are more inclusive than other more conservative religions and do not have strict, oppressive rules (Think Unitarians)
True. There are more inclusive religious faiths. But, that does nothing to change the overarching phenomena of religion existing within a patriarchal culture at large.
It is within that larger context that the overall powerlessness of women is seen. And hence...a larger proportion of women belonging to religions than men, regardless of the nature of that chosen religion.

VI: I don't consider a more sensitive nature, either in men or in women, to be a shortcoming
I don't either - it is just a personality trait. That is all.
However, in the context of this discussion, it is a less than desirable trait.

VI: It's known, according to studies, that women make up the majority of worshippers at all churches. Why exactly is not known but it most probably has to do with their psychological nature.
Actually, the reason has far more to do with external factors like...oh...say...imbalance of power in the culture at large.
Religion attracts powerless people. That is why more women turn to religion - for a sense of empowerment - for a lot of women, it is the only source of power they have.
And by the way...it is sort of humorous to read the responses of men who project the standard stereotype of women "being more sensitive" and having emotional shortcomings, etc. And it is funny that it is the men commenting on this thread and not women. Poor, poor women...they don't even understand themselves what is happening...poor things.
The underlying issue is not personality/psychological/emotional shortcomings of the female sex.
The underlying issue is that men, in our patriarchal society, have taken women's power away from them. Men have taken more than their share of the pie, leaving women in a position to look for ways to feel what it is that they deserve, as a fundamental right - their own power.
Unfortunately, religion offers a delusional state of self-empowerment, when it is anything but that. It becomes a catch-22 for women - be powerless or join a religion to feel powerful - a religion run by men. It is a lose-lose situation for women.

If the GB changed a major teaching, would all witnesses just go along with it?
by stuckinarut2 inso if the gb changed its "bible based beliefs" on some teaching, would witnesses all of a sudden change their individual beliefs too?.
witnesses like to claim that "their bible trained hearts and minds" make them believe as they do, but we know that the reality is that all witnesses hold their "deep seated beliefs" according to what they have been told to believe.. so what would cause the average witness to question those that dictate their "personal convictions"??.
thoughts?.

The JWs care about one doctrine and one doctrine only - they want to live forever on a paradise earth.
It doesn't matter what the other doctrines are. Those are flexible and the sheep will adjust to whatever nonsense comes from those on high. Just give them their promise of paradise. They will follow.
