Cain - where's the critical thinking skills?
by jws injust read a post on facebook where somebody is making some wild crazy-talk about the descendants of cain being the beast of revelation or something.. cain was always a strange tale to me.
don't people use any critical thinking skills when they read this stuff?
everybody knows cain killed his brother abel, but do they ever look at the surrounding tale?.

wakanda: I think when we reminisce we can get back into the mindset we had at the time, i.e. being 19. Silent could have been thinking about the situation from a non-indoctrinated 19 year old point of view, but still 19. Also, drag comedy is seen a lot in society, and we are sort of indoctrinated to laugh at it. ???
I think that JWs in general are indoctrinated to laugh at things that are "different". I have experienced JW in-laws that have laughed very inappropriately at other people who have had unfortunate circumstances. Their funny bones are attached to their asses. As far as drag comedy in "society" goes...that again is a JW funny bone instead of an understanding of what drag comedy is. Oftentimes, JW humor (that I have encountered) is of the derisive sort. Slapstick humor at best.
I would think that a young Bethelite encountering a doddery old fool at the helm of an organization that has promised them that they "wouldn't grow old in this system of things" would have a rude awakening instead of finding it funny. But no. Instead, those same young'uns just substitute themselves into that promise and believe even more deeply in their own infallibility and eliteness. "Not me! I am young. Of course I will be the generation that escapes old age and death!"
Overlapping generations indeed. (I always think of dogs with their tongues hanging out, lapping up water, when I hear that phrase)

Wakanda, you are right. This highlights how ill prepared the Wt org is when dealing with common ordinary problems.
From silent Buddha's account, there was a lack of understanding at all levels. In an ideal situation, the newbie bethelite would have been educated about what was really going on with Old Man Swingle. But no. All he got was a reprimand and nothing else. Facing the reality of it was beyond anyone's ability
Like I said before, JWs are conditioned to think that the effects of old age will magically be diverted for them. They will never grow old.

I was staring at him because I could not believe what I was seeing. So of course we tried not to pay attention, but it got worse. After he sat down he pulled the waiter close and tells him something. 2 minutes later the waiter comes out with a tray that had 3 large containers of JELLO.You have just described an elderly man with dementia.

WakeMe, you are dead on with your conclusions about JWs being stunted and infantilized by the org. It is an upside down organization. Not only are the adults infantilized, the children are being "adultized".
Think of how a JW child is made up to be a tiny adult - they are dressed in clothes that are adult in style, they are given adult tasks (save the householder from Satan!), they are put on boxes so they can reach the microphone to read Bible passages about adult things they don't understand (rape and bestiality) and then they are baptized while they are still children. And you end up with kids thinking they are all "grown up" when they are not. And they never will be.
How can a JW distinguish between what is appropriate behavior for a child or adult when they are given such convoluted guidelines to follow?
No wonder there is little concept about age appropriate behavior when the children are made into adults and the adults are made into children.
