And really, if I am indeed just an evolved organism how could I imagine such a thing? How did mankind project this hope which is outside of my experience? Who could have come up with such a story?

I have a question - as a young child, I sensed 'something' long before I could be indoctrinated....why?

Both my parents were anti-religion and so were their kind and decent family/ friends - they'd be horrified to read some of the posts here.....the hatred, nastiness,
My Dad leant towards an agnostic way of thinking, yet his words and way of life were exemplary - he would have 'died' spiritually if he had been a 'JW' man. They would have killed him.
I suppose that was part of my final wake up re the witnesses, why had the God the JWs had made up , want to destroy the decent and kindly folk who made up my family, because when I lived with the 'types' who made up the congregations, I found it was full of horrible people, dressed up to look nice, to act nice but emotionally immature, lacking loyalty to anything but their ever changing 'God'
So, I've been burnt - but...I remain locked in that early childhood sense of the universe ...I choose to believe in the wonderous. When I was yet reading Jack and Jill books, I grasped or in my inner world got hold of the concept of time as in eternity.
I'm going to trust 'me' - trust my heart and sense of the universe.

Your OP asked the question - I can't beat you over the head with the answer - it's your journey after all.
I feel it's my job to seek, my job to refine and not be the passive receiver of information that gives me the heads up that God exists.
I'm a searcher, a hopeful and believing searcher. If I am nothing more than an evolved organism, then I have no right or place to understand the concept of eternity, or self sacrificing love, especially when acts of love are secret to me, do not help me in my daily existence but simply build my spiritual sense of joy.

When I was a kid, perhaps 5-6 years old - back in the early, early 60s - I would sit in our coal shed.....and play imagination games, or just sit and watch.
I'd sit in the pitch black inner of this coal shed and watch the shafts of light which pierced through the gaps in the old metal roof.....and I'd quietly watch the motes floating in the shafts of light - and one day I'd thought of their presence in that shaft of light and I remember wondering if I maybe were just a mote in someone else's world, someone else's coal shed..... I guess my baby mind was trying to make sense of my space, presence.
You know, as puny as that childish thought was, it has kept me thinking through my years.
Time.... How do I understand time? Why is it, I can grasp the concept of eternity, time not being linear - even if it hurts my wee mind, I can imagine and taste the sense of time not being time at all, at least not as I experience it in daily life on the world stage. And this all goes back to my primary school coal shed days, before I was exposed to any concepts that are 'factual' or can be explained.
I'm nobody, but my little child heart and Inner life magnified then and magnifies now when I stretch out to this kind of contemplation. Resounding space.
And you know, we do believe what we choose to believe.

Dubstepped - so you know about the kittens????? Thank you for saving my sanity, really. My kitty has been transmitting this message for a longtime, thank you for opening the subject up....i feel safer around my particular cat god.
And thanks for saying what you've said - really, I really love hearing different positions, and it's a real pity when decent writers just bail out because they tire of name calling.
I believe. Yep. That's been my position even through the angry, fury years of my non-religious teens .... Somehow I sensed that I was a very tiny part of a much bigger picture.
Look, there are many places on the net where I/any of us can read and perhaps engage in interesting and thought provoking discussion - but I kind of hope this site keeps open to people trying to think, not just always following books.
They have an important place as the recording of human thoughts, discussions etc....but surely nothing is ever static.
Reading books by men of our age and believing they were 'truths' is what got me into the Watchtower mess in the first place - and I suspect many others fell into that trap.
I'm open to hearing the thoughts of other posters......And yes, I choose to believe. And it's OK.

sometimes i wondered if it was due to coaching, in particular when the questioning put a person in a tight spot.

by Phizzy inthe longer i am away from the cult, the more very childish and downright silly it seems in many many ways.. just another example of the childlike way they do not think things through is their obsession with "not bringing reproach on jehovah's name", that concept was used to stop jw's doing all sorts of stuff, a lot of it quite normal.. but the worst aspect of this concept is that they cover up the evil within their org any way they can.. yet they only have to look back on all the cover-ups of the past, by other religions, by politicians etc etc to see that an open acknowledgement and an open dealing with the situation at the time is far better.. cover-ups get exposed in the end, and leave you looking far worse than if dealt with honestly..
