In essence not long after dusk in the town of Ottery St. Mary, all 17 pubs in the town sponsor a tar coated 30 kilogram barrel which is then lit, and hoisted onto the backs of the local 'boys' to run precariously through the town centre with the crowds cheering wildly on..
celtic ive been there !!!!! it was a fabulous night-I had sooo much fun..the whole village was packed, the beer was flowing and the atmosphere was amazing...I thought they were going to roll them and couldnt believe it when they lifted them...what a great night! I keep meaning to go back-it's only a few niles from me......see you there next year?

Going back to school...
by CeriseRose inwell, i've started back to university, which had gotten a little sidelined by my jw experience.
about 15 years ago i'd done a few semesters of college, but really didn't know what i wanted to do in life.
i went to business college, entered the workforce, and right about the time i was going to go back to school, was brought into the jws by a coworker.

Thats wonderful!!!!!!!!!
clever you...... education's never wasted and makes you feel so good..
I couldnt go to uni because of family commitments...but i'm just finishing my 2 year access course then my degree proper starts in September and i'm really excited about it.I think getting a degree now is a good time ot do it; the full time 'kids' we're working with are so less motivated and although we're part time we're weeks ahead of them...maybe if you'd done it sooner you would'nt have got such a good mark,,,good luck with your new courses.....

Backpacking and Travelling, New Friends and New Experiences
by Celtic inhow many of you balmpots have ever had the travelling bug before?
how close have you come to just simply dumping everything, donning your backpack and making off for new horizons?
perhaps you have already caught the travelling bug and already seen many exciting new places, new, strange to you cultures and experienced the life on the road, on a minimal budget.. can you tell us where you would like to go, where you have been and any stories about your travels?

Like Simon, having children (at 21) and having to look after my mother meant I could'nt just do anything on a whim-i've got to be here for them...I hav'nt been bitten by the travel bug... i've been mauled by it and it's driving me insane...we've taken the children abroad alot though and they all think they travelling is better than the actual holiday...so maybe i'll be allowed to join them on their respective gap years...
when I was younger we lived abroad, as did most of the families we socialised with, staying away for a few years then returning for a while..my parents continued to travel when we all left home until they died and I've always felt since having children, that i'm waiting to go off somewhere again..it's very frustrating..... most of my school friends hav'nt got children and are still in their travelling phase 20 years later....
As soon as my youngest has finished his exams you wont see me for dust! I plan to sell the house, wrap up work and send lots of postcards.............I've always wanted to experience Tibet and to cross each continent on horseback; i'd love to trace the ancient trade routes in Asia using the indiginous horses of each region....i'd like to travel alone-but it's probably not a good idea, Turkey especially is supposed to be a nightmare for lone women.....I have a friend who rides who wants to see Jordan on camels......so now I have to start persuading one of my friends that ride to pack up their lives and ship out with me for the rest.....(gadget, I may have a plan for you...have you started those riding lessons yet...?)
good luck with your plans Celtic...I hope you make it-maybe we'll bump into eachother along the way...

In the New System I was going to............
by reboot in..do you remember what you wanted to do when that was a ' reality' ?
is it still important to you to do them?.
what hopes and dreams were you longing to fulfill.... have you started to live them now?.

((((hi logical)))) I find it amazing how many didnt actually believe it when they were in-it was a large part of the religion and I believed it at the time; when I realised it was twisted bible reasoning and would'nt happen I tried to make sure that didnt ruin my dreams......you can use the future as your own 'carrot' logi- it's there in front of you for you to shape.....we've all got to have dreams.....what would you like to do or be?.

Good things always come in threes eh, Boogerbill...?
I always liked the saying Chance Favors the Prepared Mind
thats a nice way to approach life Atilla....
The one positive I took from the society when I left was way that the thought of paradise made me focus on what I knew would make me really happy; to ask myself what I really wanted out of life, and to make sure I did it in there here and now and not to getso bogged down in life that I forgot to live.
I hope you all manage not to loose sight of some of those dreams and turn them into reality if that's what you want; though some of you sound as though you're living them right now!
FMZ -that was beautiful...
