I loved Arts &Humanities in HS and CC. What are some of your favorite periods or styles? I'm ecclectic so I like stuff from Ancient Egypt and Babylon to Antebellum(is that the right word for "pre-civil war" american?). I've forgotten so much, but I remember if I see it. I liked alot of rennaisance art and architechture, The Dutch painters, The Italian Masters. Dali is the closest to our time artist that I like. I didn't study much asian art and history, but would love to do so.

You could do a Sweet Potato Pie Cheesecake, using yams of course. You could find a recipee online or create one. To create one, just start with a basic Ney York style baked cheesecake recipee (unless Baked and Ney York are the opposite, then go with the baked.) Add about 3/4 to 1 cup of puree of yams, carrots, pumkin; along with all the spices that you'd usually use for a pumpkin pie or carrot cake. Ginger, Clove, Allspice, Nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, and 1/4 tsp of black pepper-trust me!
So you make your cheescake batter and crust as usual, then you take 1/3-1/2 of the batter and mix in the above pumpkin/carrot blend, then swirl that through the batter for a marble effect. The quality of the eggs and cream cheese are very important, and I sometimes add too much puree, and then the final product is dry and crumbly. Less puree seems to help with that, a water bath might, but I don't know for sure. This is best done as an experiment 2-3 days ahead of time before the one you bake for company. Good Luck.

I thought I had more dessert recipees here, but I guess not. This thread has Beer Bread and other stuff. I mentioned Ribs with Saurkraut, which is a comfort food for me--more the saurkraut than the ribs.

Ok, this recipee I just made the other day. I do the variation of using pumpkin not persimmon, I've used yams before and it was good too. I also learned a long time ago that if baking, yams will work better for consistency and flavor in baked goods.
From the Joy of Cooking
Persimmon Buttermilk Pudding
Preheat oven to 400F.
Butter a shallow 3 qrt. baking dish.
Measure 1 1/2 cups persimmon pulp. In a large bowl wisk until light:
4 large eggs
whisk in the persimmon pulp, then whisk in:
2 1/2 cups buttermilk
4 tbl spoons (half stick) melted, unsalted butter
In separate bowl combine the following:
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon grated or ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
Add the dry ingredients to the persimmon mixture and whisk until well blended.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake in a water bath until a toothpick inserted
in the center comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Serve the pudding warm or cold with
whipped cream.
Pumpkin Buttermilk Pudding
Prepare persimmon buttermilk pudding as above, substituting 1 1/2 cups pumpkin puree.
The water bath is very important, also, this tends to stay very goey, if you've baked it past 50min at 400F it is done, it will set up a bit as it cools. This to me is like a cross between pumpkin pie filling and brownies. And it is VERY rich, so go with small portions until you get used to it.
(sorry about all the crazy colors)

Opinion peice on Athiests
by SickofLies inthere seems to be a lot of hostility on the board toward atheists still and a lot of comments floating around like atheists are to preachy.
well i want to take a quick minute and deal with some of these issues.
to begin with, to make any statement regarding atheists in general would be false for several reasons.

I think what puts people off is the used car salesman approach to ...anything. Fine, your an atheist, I'm glad you are speaking up because I think SOME athiests need too, but some people--athiest or xian--just don't know when to shut up and stop selling their idea. Maybe its in the sales pitch.
Personally, when ANYBODY comes at me with their ideas, and get excited or emotional or belligerant or unreasonable, I take my leave.
I am not Xian, I am not Atheist, and I don't think you're the "worst" of the too-strong-sales-pitch crowd.

Are We Kind Because It's the Right thing to Do/Or Because "God"Tells Us To?
by flipper inin seeing the " debates " the last couple days of religionists debating with atheists i couldn't help but start a thread on what i have noticed since leaving the jehovah's witnesses religion.
personally just to set the record straight on my views personally i consider myself a strong agnostic, perhaps a weak and learning atheist, if that makes any sense .
while in the witnesses, i was always annoyed ( for 44 years i might add) by some who considered themselves very " spiritual " being kind to others in a facade kind of manner.

If a person doesn't claim to be Christian, what are they going to use as a standard or how would they define kindness?
How I'd like to be treated. How I'd like you to treat my mother, father, brother, sister, nephew, niece.
Phone calls not returend? I'm human and forgetfull, I'm sorry, I'll probably call in a day or two, what with the holidays apoaching and me being sick...
...not everything that happens or doesn't is about us.
Making comments about others' weight...infront of a group...well that's just wrong. I'd say THAT person has issues, and being "nice" to them, well that's if you're a saint or just a human, you could gracefully ignore her ignorant comment or call her on it, or respond in kind, "Well that's the pot calling the kettle skinny". I guess it comes down to wheather or not you want to play these people's games with them or not. I usually choose not.

I treat people the way I do because I am the one who has to live with the memorry of what I've done-good or bad, pointlessly mean or generally kind. A babble GaWD is the furthest from my thoughts, but Karma and Dharma do come into consideration and I've seen and felt them play out. What I aim for at the end of the day is "No regrets". For me that means not being too pasive and letting schmucks say what ever swill, but usually I just try and ignore them, and see if there is someone else who needs a "Hello" or a point in a direction. I hate cold meds, I get so mucked up in my head, but I think I got most of what I wanted to say out.

I like things from your local area, post cards or local craft items. I like Asian cultural items, teas and spices. I also like baked goods and treats, but I am newly on a gluten free(no wheat or similiar grains) diet so that is not an easy option...and I want who has me to enjoy it and keep it simple, this should not be a burden. I like books on gardening or herbs, any nature books, science books. Home made-crafted things are cool, but I won't have a tree thins year as my apt is too small.
edited to add: I collect heirloom varities of flower and vegatable seeds. If you have seeds from plants that your great great grandma "Jenkins" used to grow, and you still grow them, I'd LOVE that.
Also, these above mentiond are the types of gifts I am inclined to give unless given ideas by this thread. So, my region is "Seattle".
