We used to write letters to the "Not-at-Homes" we could never catch at home. It was just a generic letter that I think said something about a paradise Earth, quoted a few scriptures, and gave the local Kingdom Hall's phone number, address and meeting schedule. The time that you spent writing it counted as service. After rough drafts, rewrites and then writing it one last time for good penmanship, I could easily get 2 hours out of one letter. Then you take that one letter to Kinko's and make ten copies.... BAM! 20 hours! (One sister in the congregation used to send letters to the families of people in the obituaries.) For me, the price of a stamp was well worth not having to talk to anyone.

What scams did you use for counting your time?
by Ivor Hope in.
flowerpetals post and thread reminded me of some of the scams we would use to try to show the maximum numbers of hours spent in "service" for the smallest amount of effort.
here's some of the ones i remember...just wondered if any of you had any other memories.. .

Have you been able to make up for the lost years?
by woodland ini feel that my education was stunted due to the jw belief that education is not important.
as a result i have not been able to follow my dreams, or follow the career i?m sure i was put on this earth to do.
does anyone else feel this way?

To be honest, I haven't really tried to make up for the "lost years." The time that I spent in the organization helped make me who I am today. And for the first time in a long time, I like the person I see looking back at me in the mirror. (I wish he didn't have as much gray hair as he does, but I like him a lot more now.)
I agree with almost everyone else, it's never to late to chase your dreams. Heck, make some new ones, you're free to be who and what you want to be!!!

Scoob... thanks for starting this one. I really enjoyed it. Growing up in the organization, being a JW was my whole childhood. I take great comfort in knowing that others feel the way I do. No matter how much our new friends try, they just can't understand what it was like. It truely is one of those "you had to be there" topics. Yes, I do have many memories that totally tear my heart out, daily. It's nice to get to remember something good. Which I knew I would get to do by reading the title of the thread... Had it said, "Crappy/Worst JW memories" which I don't want to unleash, I wouldn't have come in and posted. But hey, that's just me.
The yearly DCs were our "family vacation" each year. We always looked forward to the DCs, mostly to get out of town for a few days. One year, we took our camping trailer and stayed at a local campground. We met up with some JWs that were doing the same. We'd all get together every night after the DC and play games or swim or grill on the barbecue pits. I was 12; life was simple and GREAT! It's the last trip I can remember all of my family together and happy at the same time. Future DCs took away my brothers little by little (i.e. volunteering, staying in thier own hotel rooms, chasing girls).

How did you feel.......when
by morty inyou had to stand in the hallway for o canada?
( or your anthem?
)and the lords prayer?
-
CountryGuy
You know, I've noticed that depending on what country (or part of the same country) Witnesses are from, they have different "customs." Thank goodness we were not required to go to the hall during the national anthem or pledge of allegiance. Heck, we could even stand, just not salute or hold our hand over our hearts. I wonder why JWs in the US do one thing and those in Canada do another?
And, I agree. "America the Beautiful" would be a much better national anthem for the US.

Here in Arkansas, it was a skating rink. Every time you turned around, there was another skating thing. Hmmmm.... could it be that one of the brothers owned the skating rink? But I'm sure it was done out of christian love. Yeah, that's it... That would be why we only had to pay half price!
I do remember one year we were home on the 31st and we were hiding from the Trick or Treaters. I kept thinking, "I'll bet this is what the Baptists feel like!"

Joan of Arcadia
by metatron ini really like this new cbs show - perhaps because it presents god talking to an ordinary ( and bewildered) teenage.
girl.
the actors are top notch and the plots - involving a zen- like god - interesting.

Same here. They are great entertainment. They should be piped into the buildings at Bethel.
But you know the organization will never see them, let alone show them to the slaves.... er, I mean brothers! LOL!
