i remember when i was a kid, how the importance of meeting attendance was continually drummed into our heads.
through the magazines, meetings, and especially traveling overseers, it was stressed that missing just one meeting was akin to allowing satan into our lives and would jeopardize our everlasting life in paradise earth.. one particular bit of 'advice' stood out, even to a small child: even if out of town relatives showed up on meeting day, you shouldn't let that cause you to miss a meeting.
i remember trying to play that out in mind... 'welcome, grandpa!
Bottom line....these people just can't make the time for you. It's all pleasantries. "Oh we should get together sometime." Yadda yadda. They couldn't give 2 hoots about getting together with you. Professional BS'ers!
The only time the looovvvee to get together is when it's on your tab and the booze is flowing (on your dime of course!
i've been dating a jw girl for about 4 years and we've recently had a lot of issues with the fact that her family doesn't like that i'm not a jw.
i've been looking into the religion and am interested in it.

Don't do it. The JW religion will dig to your VERY core and you will never be the same. They get under your skin and up you a**.
Tough when you are first in love but as time goes on you just don't realize how much the JW thing affects every aspect of your life.
There isn't a day that goes by that I wish I wasn't born in to the craziness of the JW's.
i've watched the reaction to the nepal disaster for the first time with eyes opened.
lots of comments about praying for the brothers and sisters affected.
the official release on the website references only the sister and her two children that died, along with the impact on the brothers there.

the brothers were never able to speak to the man.

a prominent elder who likes the sound of his own voice (hint, his initials are william saad) yes of quite a well connected family, was on a judicial committee who was disfellowshiping one of his own male relatives for repeated marijuana usage.. this story by the way shows how corrupt the whole system is.
as williams family (elders and c/o) had covered up the previous few sorrid outcomes of his drug usage, they couldn't contain the last public viewing of his drug dependency, witnessed by many witnesses ironically... so they held a jc to disfellowship him.

It's all about who you know. If the DF'd relative just continues to come to meeting regularly, he won't be out long. Membership has it's privileges. It's all in who you are. We've seen this all our lives. If an Elders kid gets in trouble and they can't hide it. The kid gets a slap on the wrist. DF'd for 6 months or less.
We witnessed a loosey goosey sister (Very attractive) get DF'd for 6 months. She was caught screwing everything with pants on. Got DF'd for 6 months. Hmmm...I wonder how she got "back in" so quickly? lol
On a positive note. Maybe the doobie smoking relative brought some primo weed to the farewell party. Nothing would surprise us!

i am sitting at the recent assembly, bored out of my mind (have you ever heard anyone call these things fun?
) and the next speaker walks out on stage.
he starts off with an illustration.
i have read quite a bit on this site about the effect of shunning, mainly how the person being shunned reacts to it.
and then there is the wt reaction, how everything is the df'ed persons fault.. well, i ran across this article today.
some might think it is way too off base with the drug problem that this girl faced.. but the point i got out of it is how important it is to help the person with the problem instead of walking away and expecting that ignorance will cure the problem.
This brings up a subject that we as parents had with our teenager just this past weekend. We asked our child what would he/she think if they had a drug or alcohol problem and went to a rehab facility for help and once they arrived the facility said that they could or would not help them. Once you get well, please come back to see us. He/she said that they would be shocked and that would not make sense. The point we were trying to make with him/her is that you don't reject people when they may need your help the most. We are getting our kids to think critically. Something we did not learn til later in life.
