Do you like your name?
by Xena indesib77 started a thread about changing her name.
made me think about my name, i've always liked it.
i doubt i would ever want to change it....so would you ever want to change yours and if so, to what?.

I like my name but had a hard time naming my kids. I always wondered if you "grow" into a name. I named them names that could have many, diverse nick-names.
My question: I you had had a different name, would you be different? Bambi? Adolf? Gertrude? Herman? Do you grow into a name? It seems some people fit theirs so perfectly. Others, no.

Kidnapping children from the non-jw parents, was there a trend?
by Netty inthis happened a few times, back in the 70's, in the congregation that i went to.
there were a few families who were jw's, divorced and remarried, had (physical anyway) custody of their children, but the divorced spouse was non-believing and wanted their rights to the children.. one family, when the father of the children went to court to get custody of the kids, picked up and fled the country.
we later learned they were in costa rica.

If anyone has any stories like these, I could really use them for legal purposes right now. The kidnapping can go so far as emotional kidnapping and blackmail also. Please contact me if you want to help.
I have run across many horror stories which usually backfire on the JW parent. One girl was put into an assylum when she told her parents she didn't want to be a JW. She was 15 and the institution later found her a home with "real" parents after figuring out there was nothing wrong with her other than she had developed her own free will and used it. It continually amazes me how the WT mentality can over ride what is a basic instinct to protect your own children and provide them a loving environment. It so often facilitates disfunctional families which creates a vicious circle of justification/poor decision making.

What's your favourite word?
by myauntfanny inbecause of another thread i got curious about whether many people have a favourite word.
i've never really gotten over my first love, which was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (seems like there ought to be a comma in there somewhere).
but that's not really a word.

We could only eat it after my mom decided SHE liked it and we had to call it "Fortunate Trinkets." No Boo-berrys or Count Chocula though...they were definitely demonic.

"Un-baptism" questions please
by alamb inmy eldest child has asked to be baptized next month as a jw.
the court has ordered i have to give written permission if the child is under 18. .
i am going to consent, but only if she studies with me and can answer my baptism questions.

Thank you for all the questions and feedback. I found out her "boy-friend" is also getting baptized...hmmm.
This is so difficult. How can you give your child permission to never speak to you again...let alone carry a blood card! I also have to think of my JW vs. non-JW children. This is multi-generational. I have 3 JW/ 2 non-JW and their children may never meet. To fathom this 100 years from now is too much for me.
Thanks again and keep the questions coming. Maybe just one of these questions will stick.

I, too, have gone back and forth on this. I want her to learn to think for herself though, before turning her brain in to the 'organization.' I want to know she is making an informed decision, be it good or bad, not a blind commitment like I did. I wish I had had to explain some things before I committed at her same age, 16. I would not be in this boat now, nor would she.
I know she has no knowlege of previous policies of the WT and is doing this out of peer pressure and pressure from her elder-wannabe father.
I have the WT library dating back to the 1800's in the basement which I have read (and got in trouble for as a pioneer.) I think she needs some access to it. She may be asked the same questions later in life at the door or running into one of "us". I don't want her to ever say, "Why didn't you tell me? or try to show me?" Only then will I support her decision, because it is her decision.

Farkel....I'll phone you. Sorry about this weekend. I'm glad you're OK.
These are wonderful! I wonder if I have to keep it to 80...or isn't it 120 by now? I'll go get my OM book.
Any ideas for my form for the elders? They are denying shunning exists so I can hold them to it.

No English law, sorry. I'm from the US with lineage from Scotland. I can send you the court order though. I got it by saying that getting baptized a JW was as big a decision as marriage, voting, etc. The court agreed.
Funky,
Thanks! Those made me grin. I'll start my list now. This is going to be fun. Keep them coming...please!!!
