Face palms. Just palms in faces all over. Its hard not to think some of you play stupid for laughs, and yet i know some of it is sincere. For the sake of discussion, i will treat it as sincere...

here is the OP:

None of that is phrased as past tense or historical. Its all present tense and phrased to read, to anyone for whom english is their first language , as if this was written a few years ago and still current watchtower thought. Thats why it matters. To try and play as if this is any way current makes all who leave the org or who criticize the org look like idiots. We take quotes from 65 years ago and run with them, making them appear to have been printed a mere “several years ago”. Thats factually and purposefully dishonest and undermines real debate on the organization. It ruins credibility. Thats why it matters.

Before this goes off the rails, yes the quote is relevant, in context and with the proper historical perspective. When a source like jwfacts quotes the wt, with date and publication references, its completelty legitimate for discussion... but without that acknowledgment and source reference its deceitful and underhanded. Of course the OP has been meet with the usual froth of “yea the wt is evil!” With few willing to have the honest discussion as to how long ago this was... no we would rather jump up and down and get in a tizzy if anyone points out how foolish this whole thing is or tries to add the least bit of perspective.

But dont let me throw the cold water of logic on your pep rally. Continue as you were :)

That snark was completely uncalled for. Besides, how would you define it? 'Several years ago' is far more accurate than 'a few years ago.' What, should she have said 'eons ago' instead?

No, it was completely called for. 1952 was 65 years ago. Thats several overlapping generations. Only a complete moron would call that “several years ago” in any context other than geological. It was more than several decades. Its very literally a lifetime ago.

If you want to hold it ahainst them, by all means. They said it. Just attribute it correctly... the problem is saying it was 65 years ago automatically makes it less relevant so you want to obscure the time line.

Fail.

however, she refused and died; to the horror of the medical staff and the entire province of quebec.. two years later, there was a change in politics and the topic came back up in the media.

the parents of eloise dupuis, obviously exhausted by the media coverage, wrote a comment to a well known news paper in quebec.

My point however is that she was not entirely free to make that choice due to tremendous pressure from her group had she gone the other way.

See, that didnt last long. now you have reversed course. Either she made a choice or not. She was entirely free. We know this because, as you said, she choose. That you disagree with the choice or would have choosen differently does not negate that she choose.

People make poor medical and financial choices every day. They make these choices based on factors that may seem strange or downright stupid to us, but they made them anyway. It was their right to make them and to be stupid, if they wish. Thats freedom. Its a bitch.

You are suggesting that individuals freedom should be stripped and people forced in your mold... in the name of freedom.

It is not because the victim has the ability to free himself/herself that as a society, we should ignore the abusers who are making their lives miserable. Like we would not ignore an abusive husband, in a similar manner, we should not ignore abusive elders.

And now you have exposed your real problem. You are laying the organizations blood policy at the feet of “abusive elders”. Elders no more make policy than ministerial servants or pioneers. I dont know your story and im not asking, but it sounds like you were done wrong by some local yahoos and now want to hold “elders” accountable for all wrongs ever done.

Elders have no power to make people choose. The organization doesnt either. Empower people to make smart choices and stop excusing bad ones. Nobody benefits from being told they had no choice when they in fact had ALL the choices.

Nathan- who cares. Given that the usa is no longer on the gold standard, what does it matter?

@caves- my next door neighbor did the exact same thing. He squated in his house for ten years and was just recently forced to move. The kicker? They paid him. Literally, they gave him 5k to move out of his own house after living there rent free for 10 years. And the market is not depressed here by any means. It made me feel like a fool.

How does your example of an abused wife prove your point and not mine?

She does have a choice.

It interesting that organizations and people who help abused women generally focus on one important aspect above all others:

empowerment.

Those organizations know they cannot make an abused woman leave a situation, that only through empowerment and letting her know she has options can she (the abused woman) really be free.

there may be a comparision to be had if one looks hard enough... i leave it to you to consider.
