  Coalize why didn't the strict gun laws in France prevent this robber from getting guns?

  That is a relevant question !

  The big difference between switzerland and USA, is that you can't buy a gun at the cornershop. Only well-trained military conscript have the right to keep a gun home. It's a country where everybody is a militian, because they don't really have an army, because of their historical statut of neutrality.

  And only 0.52 for 100 000 annual rate by gun homicide (but it's still more than in France).

  And all the guns are considered like "service weapons". You can use it only if the governement, by decret is authorizing you to use it! In case of state emergency! You can't use it at all for protecting your material goods...

  Then the switzerland is a perfect counter-exemple of your position, in fact...

  Poster country flags and privacy

  the new forum originally had a little country flag next to each post showing the country that the post was made from based on the geoip encoding (the country the ip address is from).

  before i switched over to the new site someone made an issue about it violating their privacy and i didn't want to complicate and confuse the switchover with policy debate at the same time as technical issues so removed the flags even though i disagreed.. someone has already requested it as a feature and i think it should be added back so i thought it's now time to open the discussion and get everyone's opinions.

  first, the reason i think it should be shown:.

  Simon, it's not possible, to put the flag for the 80 - 90 more big countries (more than 10 000 000 inhabitants for exemple) and for the another one to put a "merged flag" (like "another european countries", another asian countries")?

  I think it will remove a lot of understandable reluctance for the people in little countries!

  How do YOU propose to take guns out of the hands of criminals?

  One thing is sure, proposing to take guns out of the hands of criminals by making it more easy to obtain is a strange way of reasonning.

  And, let me say you, take the exemple of a jewellery robbery. We had in 2014, in Paris around 50 jewellery robbery. 2 jewellers died : the two who try to make the proud and took their gun. The 48 anothers just hands up, let the robbers take the goods and let the police make the job, they're insured and they are safe!

  Then when you say that the guns is the panacea to protect you and your family, let me say you, by experience that's totally false!

  That's really a north-american problem : free fireguns (and death penalty too.)

  More it's fireguns, more it's people killed and injured by fireguns... In europe, it's few fireguns, and few people die by fireguns. It's simple... And the most of the time, victims of fireguns shots are criminals who are fighting each other... Very few domestic accidents by fireguns...

  And here, in France, a guy who let a gun accessible to a child, (in a drawer, under the pillow, like a trophy on the wall), is considered like a total irresponsible psychopat... 

  Then I never understand this (for me totally stupid) claim : more guns will decrease the criminality... It's the total contrary! Like that, even innocent people of 5 years become accidentally criminals!

  More guns = more people killed by guns.

  You can say me : More cars = more people killed by cars.

  The only difference that guns are build to kill and can make nothing else. Not the cars.

  When I read : "to have a gun is a right", i hear "to kill is a right"

  And I feel more safer in the more dangerous parts of Paris,  that in the safer places in america, when you see "normal citizen"  but drunk, playing with guns for fun...

  yes- everyone has faults and makes mistakes; an organization even more so.. yet, you ignore all the fingers pointing at you.. many here have no faith.

  many here go to churches who lie about everything biblical; look at x-mas!.

  but at least we know god and christ and try to live up to their name!.

  Me I see a particular interest in showing that location. It can, for exemple for my case, show, that I'm not an born english-speaker, and showing my location in France, can make the readers more indulgent with my english mistakes.

  And for the violation for intimacy, except for country with very few witnesses, I don't think it's a problem.

  But for country with very few witnesses, perhaps something special can be done?

  Very interresting posting.

  You should read some books of the french philosopher Edgar Morin about "the complex thinking".

  If I try to resume the part relative at your post (it's a little difficult for me to explain that in a language I don't really masterize, as you all noticed for my english) it will be : 

  1) As you notice very well :  "The whole is more than the sum of his parts" for the reason you said. Morin define that exactly : "it exists emerging features, i.e. features appearing from the organisation of the whole, and who are able to retroact on his parts"

  2) But he add : "The whole is too less than the sum of his parts" for the reason that "the parts can have features who are inhibited by the organization of the whole"

  I let it in french here, if never I made a big mistake of translation and if a best english-speaking french-speaker is around : 
  

  1.« le tout est plus que la somme des parties » : « il existe des qualités émergentes, c'est-à-dire qui naissent de l'organisation d'un tout, et qui peuvent rétroagir sur les parties »

  2. « le tout est également moins que la somme des parties » :  « les parties peuvent avoir des qualités qui sont inhibées par l'organisation de l'ensemble »

  I don't agree with your poker player. Sure It will still be loosers and winners... But more winners and less loosers than now...

  And it's important to take in consideration how the nowadays "winners" win... A lot cheats...and are proud of it!

  Then yes it will be winners and loosers... But i bet, If cheating is not allowed, it won't be the same as today..The world is not a poker game...

  I think that if everybody had the same background at the beginning,  after it's about personal responsability, no more about the chance to live in a place where you can have access to everything... Because most of the winners today depends on the LUCK to be born in the great places!

  I prefer the person who are loosers become loosers because they don't make the effort than they born loosers because they born in a place where it's nothing...

  I don't mind the world to be more equal, I want the world, at least to be more fair!
