UC Berkeley Reverses order cancellation of Ann Coulter speech
by blondie inuc berkeley orders cancellation of ann coulter speech.
officials at the university of california at berkeley on thursday reversed their decision to cancel a speech by conservative firebrand ann coulter.. the university had announced wednesday that it was canceling coulter’s appearance following several political protests in berkeley that turned violent.. but on thursday, the university said it had found a venue where it could hold the speech on may 2, instead of the original april 27 date.
however, a leader of the college republican group that originally invited coulter said the university was placing strict conditions on the event, and he said his group intended to reject the new terms.. before the reversal was announced, coulter had vowed to go ahead with an appearance anyway.. that probably would have put security officials on high alert and might have sparked another showdown in struggles over campus safety, student views and ideological openness.. “what are they going to do?

I'm sure there will be Spolleta. I will keep the board posted on that front. My kids sensai used to be part of the PTA when her kids went to that school and is closely connected to the community here.

This is What I Would Need in Order to Believe
by cofty insometimes theists challenge atheists about what evidence would be required before they would believe.
various unlikely scenarios are offered in reply.
i have taken the bait myself in the past.. i think the correct answer is much more ordinary.

Again here we go back to anecdotal evidence. Personal experiences are worthless.

Steve2 the jw's were recently in an enclosed mall near my home in Ontario, CA. The scientilogists had a kiosk full of their books inside the Glendale, CA mall. It is my right as a customer to bring attention to the objectionable nature of the groups pitching their beliefs at the public.
Anyone can oppose a group/groups utilization of a public space. I also find their signage highly objectionable as do many others.
Another question for you Steve2. Would you feel the same of the KKK, Jones's, heavens gate or any other dangerous cult political or otherwise, were utilizing your public or private spaces to recruit innocent passersby?

Was/Is Religion Useful Even if it isn't True?
by cofty inin his book "the righteous mind" jonathan haidt proposes that religion served - and continues to serve an important role in bringing about cohesion within non-kin groups.. to put it very briefly haidt advocates a form of group selection but only insofar as it applies to humans.
our unique brains have made it possible for us to cooperate in groups in ways that are impossible for all non-human species.
despite their intelligence you will never see two chimps helping each other to carry the same log or one chimp pulling down a branch while the other removes the fruit.. his description is that humans are 90% chimp and 10% bee.

Jordan Peterson has made another interesting observation about religion that I find thought provoking although controversial. How it developed as an archetype to benefit us as individuals, our families, and our communities, today, tomorrow, a year from now, and as a civilization a hundred years from now, and so on. I was really hoping he and Harris would have gotten into that when they spoke. -

Steve2 - I understand your position now. I disagree and believe it is especially appropriate to dispute strongly carts on private property like airports, outside a theme park, indoor malls, even public streets outside hospitals.
I have seen all of the above. The last one was on the public sidewalk just outside the entry to a children's hospital where my son was getting chemo for leukemia. Damn ambulance chasers. They give lawyers a run for their money. I complained to the hospital and they left after hospital security approached them. I also complained to a local mall about scientologists having a kiosk in the center of the mall.
I believe all religious institutions not just JW's should be opposed on publicly paid for property. As should their charitable status. Any organisation that acts in opposition to the U.N. charter that addresses freedom of and from religion. JW's, Scientologists, and other groups like them that practice shunning should be a principle opposition by pro freedom loving people, so as not to take advantage of our freedoms to enslave people and their progeny.
Outlaw - excellent point.

I think our own biases play a role in what level of atheism most come to. For example the four authors mentioned have very different backgrounds. The 2 that are more anti theist Dawkins, and Dennett were raised with religion. Haidt, and Harris were not.
This does not take away from the veracity of their viewpoints. I just think it's important to know where one is coming from when considering their viewpoints. For example while I understand why Dennett and Dawkins refer to religion as a virus, I now find that viewpoint to be overly simplistic and incomplete.
Just because religion helped us along the way in our development. It does not mean that it is right. Anymore then how our compassion for others drops when the number in need gets larger. I believe we need to grow beyond our baser instincts. In order to do that we need to understand how religion developed and what function it served.

Scotty most of your posts are criticizing activists. I find your judgement and derision to be appaling. I stand with the battered wife (ex jw's) not the abusive husband (watchtower).
You seem to have a pattern of coming on this board every few months and throw a dig at those that have been beaten and abused by this organisation. Do I think a battered wife has a right to be bitter, yes I do. Do I think she should go slashing the tires of her husband's car or commit some other crime, no I don't. However I also wouldn't be drawing attention to it deriding her as part of the process.
Go ahead keep backing the abuser. The abused haven't been through enough have they.
