The Evolution of Morality - Jonathan Haidt
by cofty inthe question of how humans came to have a moral sense is one of the more interesting challenges offered by believers against unguided evolution.
even informed christians who accept the reality of evolution feel a need to add an additional step where god imbued man with a conscience.. non-supernatural explanations of the origin of morality usually focus on simple examples of reciprocal altruism and the ability to empathise with fellow creatures.
secular moral systems most often rest on the single foundation of the effects actions have on the well-being of conscious creatures.

Sparrow it's interesting how a philosopher from the 19th century nailed it. "Criticism has plucked the imaginary flowers on the chain not in order that man shall continue to bear that chain without fantasy or consolation but so that he shall throw of the chain and pluck the living flower." I never heard this entire quote until I heard Hitchens recite it.
It appears that the work of our modern scientists are accomplishing this.

Cofty all excellent books for a more coherent understanding of our nature. I know they have all helped me to be less bitter by understanding thyself and others better. Now if I could only get over my baser instincts more often. I know my blood pressure and heart would thank me.

Baker. We have just as much right to ask them to kick them out of a private park as they have to try and be there. Would you feel the same about scientogists, or a group like the Jones's or the Mansons. Your statement above shows how little you've thought this through.
It is appropriate to be intolerant of a group that strips people of their tolerance and freedom. A group that takes advantage of freedom of religion and enslaves people through their shunning policy.

Was/Is Religion Useful Even if it isn't True?
by cofty inin his book "the righteous mind" jonathan haidt proposes that religion served - and continues to serve an important role in bringing about cohesion within non-kin groups.. to put it very briefly haidt advocates a form of group selection but only insofar as it applies to humans.
our unique brains have made it possible for us to cooperate in groups in ways that are impossible for all non-human species.
despite their intelligence you will never see two chimps helping each other to carry the same log or one chimp pulling down a branch while the other removes the fruit.. his description is that humans are 90% chimp and 10% bee.

Cofty I really enjoyed your summary. Haidt's methods of studying the differing moralities of groups by going to India, and also studying the WEIRD culture we all live in by studying graduate students at a Northeastern University.
He is applying his field of social psychology to religious development in our species. One of the most interesting statements that he made was that religion and spiritual experiences in particular "bind and blind us". He gives many examples not just religious ones as Cofty mentioned. Where we circle something sacred as a group. We are bound together in this exercise, blinded to its faults in the process. Then feel a sense of something greater than ourselves. Sporting events, 80's raves, military units, religious revivals, and so on.

Trump Apologetics
by azor inwhat do you think it will take to get the defenders, and equivocators to stop their apologetics?.
i'm beginning to wonder if we will literally see the king walking down the street with no clothes and still have the equivicators on this board make excuses.
