I had a septoplasty, turbinate shaving, & removal of a nasal bone spur this last Monday. I almost posted that I was going to have a procedure and ask that you all keep me in your thoughts.....but, thought that compared to what some here are going through, that this would be nothing at all. Has anyone here had similar surgery? I am absolutely miserable. I can't describe the pain at times. I have had to already have a refill of pain meds, when most likely by this time some are not even taking them. I couldn't sleep at first....and still can't without meds. Then just a while ago I woke up feeling like I was suffocating.....due to open mouth breathing, I felt like a goldfish in the Sahara.....my mouth, nose, & eyes were completely dry. The splints in my nose felt like butter knives in a rock and I couldn't breath. Boy was that ever a scary feeling!! Anyway, I don't mean to complain, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had anything similar with them. When I called the Patient Advisory Nurse, they were concerned, but stated that this can happen sometimes. I get the splints out on Monday....thank God.....so maybe it will feel better then.........Thank you for listening......

What is the most unique name you've encountered?
by Why Georgia inthis question comes to mind right now because i seem to be surrounded by pregnant women.
3 of the mom's in my sons' kindergarten class of 12 - are pregnant and in the other classes i notice a similar trend.
it's not a large school - maybe 60 kids max between the preschool and kindergarten.

Oh, I have some funny stories of people's names. I used to work in a hospital and you got exposed to so many different names, that's for sure. My friend worked in the Labor & Delivery department one night when a lady gave birth to a baby boy she named Lemonjello (pronounced: Le mon GEL O)....when she said the name it sounded nice and my friend, Julie, asked where she got it and was told that "I just looked in my cabinet one day and saw it and liked the way it sounded". That's when Julie realized the baby was named for lemon jello!! Then there was the lady named: Ineda Peter. And then there was the gentlemen named Les Dick.......he couldn't win, because it sounded bad either with the first name first or the last name first ( Dick Les ).

JW's on trick or treat night
by carla inhow did your jw families appreciate people knocking on your doors on trick or treat night?
ever answer the door and tell them how pagan they were?
we had one jw house that used to be totally dark except for the porch light so we could read their sign- we are jw's and do not celebrate halloween.

If it wasn't a meeting night, my folks and I would drive out of town and eat out and go shopping or something. But they would drive around some for me, so that I could look at the costumes and all. I used to love to look at them and see the kids trick or treat. Then, as I got older I still enjoyed it, but I did so with jealousy....wanting to be out there myself. Then, when we would eat or shop, everyone would ask me why I wasn't out treat or treating or what my costume was going to be later.....that was ackward. When my folks would say we didn't celebrate Halloween, they never knew what to say. Of course, nowadays, I have noticed more people who say they don't celebrate it, so that's not as strange anymore.

Chaperones
by Gretchen956 inrichie's thread got me wondering what ever happened to the practice of chaperoning???
i mean really, was this just a regional thing where i grew up?
we had to have a chaperone always with the opposite gender even if we were old!

I remember one sister from our hall whose very first kiss ever was at her wedding when they were pronounced husband and wife! YIKES! I don't even think they were allowed to even hold hands and they had to always be chaperoned. Needless to say, they are no longer married......they didn't know each other any better than if had been an arranged marriage and due to past molestation to the husband (my his elder foster father) and the rigid sexual rules and fears, it spelled disaster for them.

Who will survive Armageddon? What does the WT teach?
by GoingGoingGone ini made a comment to my 15 year old son last night about the arrogance of the jw teaching that all non-jws will be destroyed at armageddon.
he responded that i am mistaken, that the jws teach that jehovah reads hearts, even of those who are being preached to today.
in other words, no one is 'written off' like that, and btw he hates it when i take a teaching i don't like and exaggerate it like that..... .

I remember being out in service as a kid and being asked point blank by a householder if it was true that JWs believed that only JWs would be 'saved' through Armageddon. I sort of stumbled a bit in my reply and the brother who was with me stated that God would read the hearts of men and that it wouldn't be man who judged....yadda yadda yadda. His main purpose was to appease the householder and not offend her with the thought that JWs thought only JWs would survive. He told me this later, that we need to be careful how we respond to questions like this....sort of like a bit of theocratic warfare.....it leaves the impression to the householder that it's God judging hearts and not just being a JW....yet, as the brother continued to say to me later, we all know that what Jehovah is reading in the hearts is if they are true JWs or not, as he said not all who claimed to be JWs would necessarily survive. So, he thought it was funny that he answered the lady's question (although in a misleading way) in a way which didn't offend her totally, while still believing that basically what she said was the truth of the matter.
I don't like dishonesty and that really left an impression on me (not a good one)....one that later came back along with other situations of hypocrisy, etc.

Name responsibilities that sisters could have had at the hall

My dad had me do alot of things for him behind the scenes, like type his talks.....he had the Society manuscripts, but liked them in bigger fonts. I also typed up the meeting schedules for him and he let me "chose" the ones to do the opening and closing prayers from the approved list. I also helped with the school assignments. I know that's minor, but I wasn't supposed to tell anyone. Then, later I used to audit the KH accounts. The brother who used to do it quit and his wife did it for a while, but they were afraid people would 'talk' if she kept doing it, so my dad took it......but gave it to me to do. We were a small rural congregation, so there was not alot of choice, I guess. Other than that, women folk were pretty much kept out of any kinds of responsibilities.

Your picture and avatar are adorable! I love ALL dogs. There are breeds that I might not choose to have myself for one reason or another, but I love them all. I had a friend with a PB and he was so lovable, but his "wife" and baby got loose and killed a neighbor's dog and a cat. They were forced to put them down, but Zeus was never mean. Let me tell you, I've met some mean poodles in my day, so any breed can be mean. My German Shepard scares people all the time, but he is the biggest marshmallow on earth (and he's white, so he looks like a marshmallow, too! ha ha ha). My nephew used to foster PB's for a local rescue and all but one were truly gentle animals who had been neglected, abused, or just turned away because of media fear. I'm glad to hear of happy PB stories.

Mormons/LDS

I remember once many moons ago, when I was still an active JW, I was at my good friend's house and two nice Mormon boys made the ill-fated decision to knock on the door. My friend's husband was just starting to attend meetings and his friend (a jerk-like elder) was also visiting. The guys let the Mormon boys in and at first acted interested, then spun it around to try to witness to them. They made the poor boys squirm a bit in their questions and they if it wasn't a question to which they had a prepared comment, they were truly lost.
I remember my friend and I staying back in the kitchen and thinking how mislead those poor boys were and how spiritual our guys were.......YIKES!! Looking back, those boys were no different than most of the JWs......they prepare their script for the door-to-door work and if approached with deeper questions or 'attacks' to their faith, they can be speechless.
My step-daughter's ex-boyfriend was a Mormon and she started going with him to some church activities and we could tell he had been 'witnessing' to her and it had me worried, as I felt she was too young (16) to be making such life changing decisions such as leaving her church to convert. He was, however, a sweetheart and was a sincere, hardworking boy seemingly with high morals. So, I have nothing against him personally or his family....I just worried about her getting caught up in the religion solely for the boy. He is getting ready to go on his Mission after graduation and they recently broke up.
I know that we have had Mormons on this board and I don't mean anything bad toward them, but my own opinion from what I have experienced and read about LDS church, I feel they are just as 'cult-like' and mislead as JWs. Good people for the most part, but just some 'out there' beliefs.
We live out in the boondocks, so I doubt if they would want to venture out to our place. Oh, I just thought about some past JW friends of mine who moved out to Salt Lake City many years ago. They came back after a couple of years, but I remember he saying that their territory was about 95% Mormon (or at least that it felt like it), so Field Service wasn't very productive.
