jehovah's witnesses seem to have drifted toward the political notion of "intelligent design" in recent years.

several times since 1996 their literature has referenced the book darwin's black box by michael behe, which book has become a kind of bible for iders.

the book introduces the notion of "irreducible complexity" in a formal way as disprove of evolution.

conservative christians like the jehovah's witnesses often claim that, like the new testament, the old testament forbids all sexual relations outside marriage, including relations between unmarried people.

that is not quite true.

to see that patriarchal and israelite culture adhered to a different standard, we must first understand just how the old testament treats marriage, sexuality and related items.. the old testament view of women as property.

The Watchtower and Creation

it struck me this past year, with respect to jw teachings about the timing of genesis 1, that even in things that really have no impact on what most jws think of as "core doctrine" the watchtower society sticks to its traditions over what the bible says.

this was again brought home in the september, 2006 awake!

the watchtower society's 1914 chronology hinges on a dicey chain of claims.

if any of these claims is wrong, then the chain is broken and watchtower chronology collapses.

along with it goes the entire belief structure built on it, including most importantly the claim of the leaders of jehovah's witnesses to have been specially appointed in 1919 by god over "all christ's belongings" on earth.

a literal interpretation of this passage shows that the author of the passage viewed the earth as the center of the universe, with the sun and moon going around it.

just why does the watchtower society view passages such as in joshua 10:12-14 as not literal?

the creation account in genesis and exodus.
