how do witnesses know if they are one of the 144,000?
my husband, who was a witness for 20 years, couldn't really answer this one beyond "they just know".
how do those "lucky" 144,000 witnesses know who they are?
Wow, thanks for sharing all of these stories!! The more I read this board, the more I understand, and the less I want to know. It's so sick. I am so thankful that my husband is OUT of this garbage - and yet thankful he is not DF'ed/DA'ed, so his family still speaks to him. :) Many things to be thankful for today.

Would that just mean they have the authority to check/maintain smoke detectors in Kingdom Halls?
any jw that has been disciplined by a judicial comiitee has the particulars of the sin he has been didsiplined for in a file kept by the elders inside a file cabinet containing other such records in that little room in the back .
that information is aceesible to elders with the key to the file cabinet.
years may go by but the file remains, even when a jw dies the file remains until elders wish to throw it out.
Too bad they don't do anything about it when it's a serious offense - e.g. child abuse, domestic violence. Does very little good for the victims to have it scrawled in a file somewhere, IF it ever gets that far.

Hmm.. that is funny and sad! We had relatives who lived in Alaska for years. They said they felt like they were in another country because it cost so much to have things shipped there from the "mainland".
Reminds me of a JayWalking (on Jay Leno) where someone answered that Alaska was a foreign country. ;)

Growing up, my husband knew a JW family with a few kids, and it was very apparent to everyone who knew them that the husband beat the wife frequently. Mysterious injuries, bruises, very subdued and frightened woman. No one called the cops. In fact, for years, no one did ANYTHING at all. Finally, my husband's mom went to the elders out of fear for the woman's life. The elders talked to the abusive husband and told him to knock it off. However, the elders also told him WHO turned him in -- so he in turn threatened to murder my husband's mom for doing so. She shut up after that. nothing was ever done - no reproof, no marking, no disfellowshipping, etc. The family stayed around another five years or so and then moved away.
That is horrible. So, you can get DF'ed for smoking, but not for beating your wife? There were plenty of marks on her to prove it. No one was allowed to contact the police to protect the woman, and even within the discipline of the organization, nothing was done. How is THAT "keeping the congregation clean"??? Makes me so mad.
sigh. It is scary how much this could happen.

How do those "lucky" 144,000 Witnesses know who they are? Does Jehovah call them up and tell them? And, do you know of any of those elite few who have LEFT the dubs?

who at the top (gb) gets to live in extravagant homes, be driven in limos, take fantastic vacations and buy what ever they want?
my stupidity maybe showing but where does the gb live, bethel?
Do they get "allowances" for food, clothes, etc? Is this, then, like a salary? How do they survive? (I was never a Witness.. hubby was... but he is not home right now for me to ask, ha ha!) Thanks.

My mother told me she recently caught the tail-end of a television commercial sponsored by Jehovah's Witnesses. This surprised me... she didn't have much info about it. Does anyone know anything about this? I never knew them to advertise on TV...
