::shudder:: I can *still* hear the voice of the guy on the tape reading those quotes after so many years. If THAT does not show indoctrination in the witnesses I don't know what does.

How the WTS brings a child's confidence & self-esteem down
by Nosferatu inthis is a bit of a spinoff of avishai's post "anyone been beat up for being a dub?
" i suffered this as a jw and i completely blame the wts for it.
the following quotes are from the pink great teacher book:.

How old were you when you left?
by somebodylovesme ini only know a handful of witnesses, but i do know several ex-witnesses.
all of them left in their late teens, which (as i've read here) is pretty common.
i know there are a lot of people here who left later in life.

Raised in the borg. Unbaptised publisher at 11. Had doubts that I brushed off for a few years. Stopped thinking like a dub at 16, out at 17.

The bible is not written for me...
by Globetrotter inin another thread (http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/65166/1.ashx), wednesday mentioned that one of the confusing points for her was that the dubs claim that the bible was written only for the 144,000, and not for everyone.
what is their reasoning on this?
can someone (blondie?

I think maybe it was meant that it was written only for them to interpret. Since they teach that only "the faithful and discreet slave" can "provide spiritual food at the proper time" this is to imply that only the 144,000 can interpret the bible, not that it was written only for them.

I'm not sure I've seen a lot of dubbies here just say "heavenly father" or some such.

How much do they charge for mags now? Or do they charge at all?
by somebodylovesme inthis is partially in reference to the post on what you said when you were at the door.
it's been a few years since my hubby's been out on service, so i'm wondering - do dubs still ask for a donation for the magazines?
we haven't had around, but i know a friend of mine said that some dubs slipped some under her apartment door a few weeks ago (while she was hiding inside, lol) and they never came back.

"Our work is supported by voluntary contributions. If you would like to make a donation towards the worldwide work of Jehovah's Witnesses I'd be happy to accept that." is what I believe is the current setup.

You'll die if you don't go to meetings
by Bonnie_Clyde inlast sunday's watchtower admits (p. 17) that "we are not under the mosaic law.
" but in the next paragraph it says that just as the tithing arrangement was not optional for the israelites, meeting attendance is also not optional for christians.
the first page of the february 2004 kingdom ministry tells us why.

I always loved that "congregate together" but no mention of when. JWs look on themselves as superior because they have more meetings than Christian denominations that only meet on Sunday, yet there is no scriptural basis for having all the meetings they do. And as for the basis of the meetings, is all that really necessary if you are to strictly follow the bible? Nope can't say as it is.

As a kid, what did you used to say on the doors.
by dh ini guess this questions is for people who grew up as jw's... .
when you were out door knocking as kids, did the people who's doors you knocked on ever tell your parents that they shouldn't bring you out door knocking in the freezing cold, or did they ever ask you why you were out door knocking when you're so young?.
i remember both questions coming up fairly often since in england it is always winter, never forget the way this one old guy bent down and asked me why i was there and i gave the answer 'i'm here because i want to be' which was a total bold faced lie, but it was what we taught to say.. anyone else experience this?

I was constantly reminded to smile, to try to look warm, to not look bored, be polite, etc. I also always gave mom an eager "yep" when she asked if I was going out even though I dreaded it. I would tell the householders when they asked that it was important to me or that I didn't mind standing out..what else do you say when you're drilled from birth.

Is there a website where current articles of WT/Awake! are posted?
by somebodylovesme in... i know that some here very generously post the most recent articles (e.g.
"comments you will not here..." which is a great post).
i was wondering if there is an archive anywhere online?

You can try a public library. I know the dubs here make sure there are copies there. I took perverse pleasure in burying the copies under a few boxes of "regular" magazines. I doubt they will be found until after Armageddon *sarcasm*
Or try to snare a dub while they are out
on probationin field service and tell them you are from out of town. Give the phone number of a local military recruitment post for contact info. -

I don't, except when I specifically want to check it on some matter. But for years it remained my mental reference because I knew it so well. When I wanted to locate a text the WT concordance was the best tool for me, since I had the NWT wording in mind. When I quoted something I had to "translate" it into "common wording". It's all over now, so I have to check it from time to time...
I always got "caught out" when I quoted by a Christian girl in my class since she could never figure out what translation that was. Though she was still in awe of just how many scriptures I had memorized. Even if you don't know what it means you know a lot of verses as a JW. I used the NIV bible for a few weeks and then just got fed up with Christianity in general. If I need something now I just use the CDRom or an niv website. But I rarely bother.
