i was never allowed to play sports, because it would be too much association with worldly people.
no skating, dance class, racquet ball, softball, nothing.
in my kingdom hall, only the "spiritually weak" played sports.
I was not able to play sports.
They compared it to being in the Greek Olympics and how the sports had pagan origins.
It is funny how anything they don't want you to do can have pagan origins. But when you point out to them, the few things that they are aloud to do, have pagan origins they don't want to hear about it.
i've just been to a big conference where we discussed retention of members and statistically lds lose most members (in the uk anyway) as follows: .
1/ 14 -18 (largest group) - i think it was 30% .
2/ new converts (next largest) - in the front door and straight out the back.
I fall into the category of mature adults that are burnt out, many just coast along doing the minimum, eventually just fading away. Not as many because there is so much to lose. Freedom sometimes is nothing left to lose.
I fall into #3, Blondies comment sums it up good for me (went out with a bang instead of fading though) although I should have been #1 if I was smart and not get involved with JW women at that time in my life.

i'd like to get comments from people about whether and how much they were shocked, surprised, or otherwise bothered by the watchtower society's becoming an associated non-governmental organization (ngo).. note that i'd like to see these comments because they might lead to some interesting publicity, so please comment accordingly.. alanf

After 22 years of hearing about how bad the UN is and them condeming all the other churches for being part of it, yes I was pissed off. Hell, I had been out for about 12 years when I heard about it. Then I thought that this would be the thing to wake up some family members still in the bOrg (along with child molestation issue). Nope, they have their heads so far up the WTS's ass that they wouldn't even look at the proof, stating that "It is all apostate lies!".

Z, your pic doesn't show. Are you talking about the big hillside with the gardens all the way up? I think the temple was about 1/2 way up the big hill. I was there in 2000. I lost about 5 rolls of film from that deployment. I had a bunch of once in a lifetime shots on those rolls.

Very very very very small amounts. My gpa's good friend owned a dairy and, needless to say, I spent most of one whole summer hanging around the dairy. You might get a drop or 2 out of a cow now and then but I never saw any bleeders. If a cow had any health problems they where seperated from the herd and treated. Any milk from them was destroyed or fed to the calfs.
this is a heads up to those friends who haven't experienced it yet, and an explanation to those friends and family who have.

if there were some way to assure that your death would result in your family and friends learning the truth about the wts would you be willing to die to 'save' them?
some of you value your life so little that you would give it up not even so that someone else may live, but so that someone could live differently?
Very good point Devinsmom. I don't see how someone could willingly die just so someone could live a little better. And that is not a sure bet that their lives would be any better outside the JW's.
so what you are saying is that you wouldn't be willing to die so that others might live? that's the basic concept of christianity. (not that i am saying christianity is the proper course) i guess the concept of dying that others might live is foreign to you. many people die everyday for strangers (soldiers, policemen, firefighters etc. etc.) it doesn't surprise me at all that some people would sacrifice themselves, even if it is only to improve the lives of others a little bit.zugz
WTF are you talking about zugz? This has nothing to do with the question. And if it was a die so they could live question, I still wouldn't willingly sacrifice my life for a JW family member or any JW adult for that matter. Why? Because it wouldn't even cross their minds if the rolls where reversed. They wouldn't even give it a first thought, let alone a second.
I have personaly put my life on the line for the greater good of society and I am not a christian. So what's your point?
