The Influence of Hellenism on Early Christianity: Dionysus as a Template for the Jesus Gospels
by fulltimestudent inthe influence of hellenism on early christianity: dionysus as a pattern for the mythical aspects of jesus..
the palestine in which the young jesus grew up was strongly influenced by hellenic mythology.
for some 600 years the jews had been subjects of first the persian empire and then the empires of alexander the great, his hellenic successors (the ptolemies and the xxxx), and eventually the romans.

Fascinating to see so many similarities. I've read how many think John's gospel was influenced by Greek philosophy ( regarding the "word" ) from the first chapter. -

Tv's in Kingdom hall
by dothemath inso now that the borg has taken all of the congregations money, there was just a resolution to get all new tv's, etc for the stage for the new meeting format.. i wasn't there, but it was a large sum.
somebody mentioned over 3000$.. all the congregations in the city are likely doing the same thing, and are getting all the equipment from bethel.. i was wondering if this was happening all most everywhere?.
can't see it in third world countries( might not even have internet).

Congregation average
by dothemath ina while back at our co visit, he commended the cong.
because our average hours had gone up.. we went from around 7.3 to about 7.5. i recall the days when anything less than 10 was considered awful.. of course now, they don't even print the hours in the km or anywhere.. i was wondering how these numbers compared to other congregations?.

Noah's ark
by dothemath infor those that believe in the flood story as genesis says, then they also are forced to accept a huge amount of evolution, way faster than any evolutionist would propose.. from a basic selection of "kinds", to the several millions of land species there are now, and in only about 4000 years.. not to mention the many types of birds that made it to remote islands, and then somehow lost their ability to fly... not even possessing wings( ex- dodo bird, moa).
scientists agree this was a process that took eons of time.. i was thinking of this because we just had a public talk on noah.
i sure couldn't make a fool of myself on that subject, going on how "factual" it all is..

Enjoying all your analysis, and also the in- depth research Anders Anderson.
I vaguely recall reading somewhere the idea from an awake that after the flood, the increased ultraviolet light (that water canopy was now gone) caused more variation.
Basically endorsing the idea of mutations......they should just give up and use some "discernment" and "wisdom".

Is the elevated tone of the G.B disappearing..
by The Rebel inand with it the language in the w.t loosing its authority?.
i ask the question because, with the g.b now appearing before members on their social media, and reluctantly on royal commissions my opinion is :-.
a) the g.b can no longer hide like wells's invisible man.

Not sure if any of you ever met or heard James Penton........I did many years ago.
my impression was of someone very intelligent and capable(he was a university professor), the extreme opposite of Lett.
They should have listened to him all those years ago, but of course instead they disfellowshipped him.

"Imitate Jehovah" CA Actually Didn't Have That Theme At All
by JW_Rogue injust got back from "imitate jehovah" ca and noticed that the theme was never really used at all.
all the talks were about family, preaching and getting along with others in the hall.
they didn't once go over an account of how jehovah acted in the past and how we should imitate that action.

At our assembly the bethel guy talked about all the bethel layoffs, and joked that at least "he had a return ticket".
He also went on the typical "watch out for apostates" rant, but (ironically I thought) he warned against following individuals and used the example of Jim Jones.
He even mentioned about drinking the poison kool-aid! I think everyone here knows most witnesses would drink anything the governing body told them to.

How accurate is the Bible?
by WireRider inhow accurate is the bible?
the "compiled" version (council of nicaea) was not established for hundreds, or even thousands, of years after events happened.
stories were handed down generation to generation to generation before being written down.

Something I never noticed before in the old green bible(the one with the dinosaur on the map)
genesis is listed on the chart under "time covered" from
46026 bce to 1657 bce
Back then they were sure each creative day was 7000 years ,
so 6days x 7= 42000 added to when Adam was created to the death of Joseph.
good for a laugh now!
