my family are deeply indoctrinated in the borg, my parents have been jws since 1963 my sister and brother-in-law and their six children are in, and my brother and sister-in-law are the family?s mascot bethel elder/reg.

Hi jumper,

I'm very sorry to hear yet another tale of the cultish behavior of JW zealots, but that's all it is. Most of us behaved this way to a certain extent when we were still blinded by the cult. For instance, I was one of Jehovah's Witnesses for about 30 years, my choice, I was not raised in it; and I'm very fond of my sister, and she is of me; but as a zealous Reg. Pioneer sister, she shunned me COMPLETELY for 5 long years, not even discussing necessary family business when my minor children were visiting with her for a couple of weeks, clear across the country!!!

I consider her a very good, caring person, but the cult tactics and control of the JW's are very powerful.

I hope your family come to their senses. They are being taught a lot of destructive nonsense.

jeeez, who'd have thought it, you travel for days to the other side of the world, get jetlagged & hang out for a week, then go to do your laundry and... lo an behold i see in the laundrette, my book of bible stories, family happiness, green new world translation, as i recover from the shock and nervous laughter, i ask the african lady working 'who put these books there', she says 'the owner' hmmm, i think, i better not bin them, so i open the my book of bible stories & guess what it says.... "if you like this book please leave your name at the counter.".

ha ha ha.

Where's the best place to live?

i don't usually start non-jw threads, but i was wondering about other places to move to.

i live in atlanta and while i love a lot of things about it, sometimes i think about moving on.

i was in south florida for the first thirty-five years and have been here for the last fourteen.

Southern California is no place to live that's for sure!

But SIMON, you said England is no place to live either, and you all want to leave - that is an unspoken feeling I get from all the English I have had a chance to talk to. They won't even talk about it. What's the problem? Really??

I Give Up - Where Can I Find Some Good Beef?

folks, i know that good tasting steaks and ground beef exist - all the years of my youth and when i was raising my family, beef tasted great.

now no matter where i buy it, whole foods, ralph's kosher, black angus, etc, the beef tastes downright nasty.. vons has pretty good beef, and i haven't tried an actual meat market, but where do you find good beef?

Ah, now steak houses, that's another good question! Also hard to find, as well as good ribs. But last year I had such incredibly good ribs with son at T.G.I.Fridays - until that, I thought it was impossible to find good ribs anymore either!

What Was The Worst Rule You Hated Being Under As A Witness?

Min, my husband was an elder during most of our marriage, and he always laughed at mildly dirty jokes. He and his friends, laughed easily at "male jokes."

Maybe I'm not understanding just how dirty those jokes were that you guys wanted to laugh at....

One of their favorites was something about "the crack of dawn."

But another rule that really burned me was "no clapping or being happy when someone was announced reinstated." Completely unscriptural and judgmental and unkind. What about the prodigal son??? What about the angels in heaven rejoicing over a sinner that repents??? What about leaving the 99 and going out to find the one lost sheep? There is no joy in restoring him to the flock?? GIVE ME A BREAK.

On the lighter side, a small rule that really bothered me was telling me I couldn't sit toward the back of the Hall, even when that's where you are most comfortable. So I always obeyed. Yet others always sat there! Not just the latecomers or families with children. I was so uncomfortable anywhere but at the back. Felt stared at. Couldn't get up to use the restroom till practically bursting, because I was so self conscious to walk past all the rows of staring people.

Minimus, your point about segregation is well taken - see, they play mind games with us all the time!!! Just recently, yet another reminder, this time at the Book Study: "Widen out!! Love the whole association of brothers! Include more individuals from the congregation in your 'circle,' " WHILE AT THE SAME TIME TELLING EVERYONE FROM THE PLATFORM AND IN THE BACK ROOMS not to associate with the weak ones!!!

Sons of worthless b's! So glad they can't mess with my mind and heart ANYMORE!

Elsewhere - that's interesting! I don't remember ever contributing specifically for the literature, yet I know we were supposed to "cover the cost" of whatever we took. In the last couple years, I had completely forgotten about donating for the literature, except for all the videos that I ordered.

And sphere, I've heard it and seen it posted here before that we were supposed to contribute for the literature plus turn in any contributions received - but I had always thought we were allowed to subtract from the householder's donation what we had already "paid" for the literature, to cover our own costs. That's what I always did!!!!!!

So I wasn't much of a Witness after all, and didn't even know it. But I often made my contributions in lump sum checks, and I thought that covered everything. Curious, was I looked down on by the brothers in the literature counter because they didn't actually see me putting a couple of bucks in the box as I picked up the literature???

And did the brothers look down on the ones who wrote checks instead of dropping cash into an unlocked box???

Seriously, all you who handled the contributions at the Hall and conventions, were checks okay?

Thanks for the tips - I'll check them all out! My son is also a beef fan, but less particular than I am. Maybe I can surprise him with some actually great tasting dinners soon.

Leolaia - I forgot about Costco - they always have good things - problem is, I don't have a Costco card. Wonder if I could join. Have to look into that too. After I pm Cowboy, of course!
