The Isaiah book?s?
by l3gi0n inwhat was the point of this book?
what did we learn?
we studied two books, 700+ pages, on the 66 chapters of isaiah, for 3 years, and what was learned?

I have a friend who was conducting at that time. I guess the inane-ness of the study wore him down. He left the org three months ahead of me.
In my bookstudy, almost all the paragraphs were answered by like three people. We'd just look at each other like, "You go." "No, you go!" "I took the last 1919 answer! I can't think of any more ways to phrase it!" There would be one full minute of silence. Finally someone would lose the staring contest and resignedly put a hand up. "Well...as it turns out, 1919 was a historic year for God's people...."
Looks like these books really did help people. Got at least a couple out in my cong! Way to go, Brooklyn!

My favourite article...
by Bofug ini love this article!
in 1910 russell wrote, "if anyone lays the scripture studies aside, even after he has used them, after he has become familiar with them, after he has read them for ten years?if he lays them aside and ignores them and goes to the bible alone, though he has understood the bible for ten years, our experience shows that within two years he goes into darkness.
on the other hand, if he had merely read the scripture studies with their references and had not read a page of the bible, as such, he will be in the light at the end of two years .

Hello Bofug!
Thanks for the very to-the-point post. In the doctrinal changes section, I'm especially interested by the flip-flops. Witnesses will say that changes occur from the light getting brighter. But what can possible explain going back and forth between to opposed beliefs? The light getting dimmer? I hope your post is read sincerely by the WT lurkers.

Threat level raised to "Orange"
by DanTheMan inhttp://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=1&u=/ap/20031221/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/terror_threat
i'm feeling very antsy, i've been waiting for a much bigger "other shoe to drop" since 9/11.. i don't know if it's all the years of the apocalyptic jw thinking but i still live with a haunting fear that the whole works is headed for a spectacular crash.
i wonder how helpless chinese villagers felt when they saw ghenghis khan's hordes on the horizon heading toward them.

I understand your point, Sheila, but I think the question of what the average citizen is supposed to do is valid. If before 9/11 there were a terror alert, do we imagine that those people would not have gone to work in the Twin Towers that day? Would the alert have done anything practical? I can see getting it out to law enforcment people and hospitals. I does seem hard to deny that this administration is using fear to control people and distract from other issues.

"A source of encouragement" I think not
by Mysterious inelders are a source of encouragement, i really think not.
the last i checked not commenting at the watchtower study was not a crime.
but the conductor made sure to come up to me after and interrogate me about "where was my hand" and then ask mom about my study habits.

Oh yeah...I remember that now. That was a pretty good film.

Are The Holidays Bothering You At All?
by minimus inthis is the first time i say, "merry christmas" back to someone.
-
seattleniceguy
My friend tells the story of when he worked at Safeway (a supermarket), stocking dairy. The music at Safeway comes from a satelite feed, so all stores have the exact same music at all times. Well, one day he was working late, listening to the steady stream of Christmas songs. After every song, your mind would lean forward a bit, holding onto the irrational hope that perhaps the next song wasn't a Christmas song. All of the sudden, at that moment, "Oh-bla-di, Oh-bla-da" came on. Every one looked at each other with crazed eyes, and spontaneous dancing broke out all over the store. (Picture the night guys doing the Watusi in the aisles.) It was four minutes of sheer bliss. Or the story goes.

Okay, how come all the girls anywhere near my age live in California? What's up with that?
Ht: 5-11
Wt.: 145
Edjumication: Continuing (read my bio).
Salary: Enough for a relaxed, non-consumerist life.
Career: Building impossible things. Solving insoluble problems. Writing.
Experience in WTS: Birth to 25.
Time out: Three and a half months.
How left: DA.Strengths: Funny, smart, good-natured. In my life, I've had about 30 housemates (counting host families in Japan), which has taught me how to get along well with just about anyone. One of the strongest things about me is an absolutely unflagging optimism. I believe passionately that we can make it. We can do it. Any obstacle is surmountable. There is a way.
Weakness: Scatterbrained at times, like things tidy but have a hard time keeping them that way ("The entropy is strong with this one"), could eat Thai food every day of my life if allowed.
Hobbies: Writing, studying language, some sports (tennis and frisbee golf, maybe some volleyball), piano, hiking, taking ferry rides across the Sound for a walk and a bite to eat. Simple pleasures.
Turn-ons: Intellegence, dorkiness, quick wit, legs, straightforwardness, nice figure, down-to-earthness, you getting my humor, me getting yours.
Turn offs: Caustic sarcasm, arguing and taking it personal, pride in ignorance, not being willing to consider other views.
Fictional Character whose personality you most resemble: Hobbes (from Calvin and Hobbes).
What I want in a partner: I'm looking for someone who loves to learn and share new things, someone with a bright-eyed, positive view of life. I like a girl who can challenge me without being pushy, someone who is down-to-earth, real, honest, someone who takes care of herself and eats right. I like to be able to joke around without walking on eggshells, so I like a girl who is confident and good-natured.
PM me!

Odrade: LOL! That's sick! Brothers, did you know that not putting down the toilet seat pleases Satan? Satan is also highly pleased by using pencil instead of blue highlighter (like me) to study the WT. And finally, using those blasted Susan B. Anthony coins without doubt falls in the realm of Satan-sanctioned, hell-spawned, Lucifer-approved, demonic activity.

Can Jesus "Save" you from Jehovah's Witnesses?
by jst2laws ini recieved a pm from a born again christian asking how i might aid him in helping a relative excape the wt.
while i am not a born again christian, the teaching of jesus that we can remove guilt and be right with god just by believing it is done helped me out.
gal 3:11-13: consequently, it is clear that no one can ever win god's favor by trying to keep the jewish laws, because god has said that the only way we can be right in his sight is by faith.

Hello Steve,
I appreciated your post. I too have been thinking more and more that the WT Society is the modern day-sect of the Pharisees. The scriptures you cite do seem to fit eerily well. Some other parallels I see are:
- Oral law to guard the actual law (for example: rules against being alone in car with the opposite sex, etc, are taken extremely seriously.)
- Straining out the gnat but gulping down the camel (intensely interested in movie ratings, but cold regarding real issues like homelessness)
- Intensely interested in outward appearance ("How would it look to others if we had facial hair in the ministry?")
- Intensely interested in achieving named ranks (If you were a publisher putting in pioneer hours, imagine the pressure you would feel to "make it official" and be a pioneer. It's just a word!)
