I'm unbelievably much happier now. And let me tell you that I was a pretty positive person to begin with. So you lurkers, if you're doing the thing where you're saying, "Well, maybe it's not all true, but it's a good way of life, and I'm happy," let me tell you, I have experienced shades of happiness I did not know were possible since I left.
Why? Because I can live my life with pure devotion to truth and reality now. I no longer have to hide from information. I can be completely honest and objective with myself and the universe. I can stop judging, ranking, and classifying everything and everyone in terms of good and bad. I can build real relationships with people. Life is so incredibly much more than what I knew as a Witness. It's like going from black and white to color.

I'm agnostic by nature and by reason. What I mean by that is that after giving the matter intense consideration, I don't believe that there is any way of knowing whether God exists, and especially what his-her nature might be. If God does exist as an intelligent personality, then s/he is obviously aware of this fact. If it turns out there is a God, I think s/he would be much more pleased by my living a good, solid life and keeping open to his-her existence than by believing that I already know God's purpose for the universe and me, which to my mind is a pretty absurd claim.
So my agreement with God is, if you don't exist, I'm still going to try my best to be a good person and to be a driving force for good in the lives of others. If you do exist, then cool - I can't wait to meet you under clearer circumstances. I think God would be / is cool with that.

one rule that i never could understand is that if you were studying with an unbelieving husband, you could associate with him, even as couples, but if a person was considered a "weak" witness, it was best to avoid any association until that person changed......what dumb rule or belief comes to your mind??

Euph: In Japan, karaoke is different - and much cooler - than here. Here, it's typically in a common area of a restaurant or bar, but in Japan, your party goes into its own little room with a TV and a couple couches. It's really fun, too, because you can order food and drinks to your room. They have specials during slow times of the day where you can get unlimited drinks and snacks, too. The reasoning behind banning it was that some groups of young Witnesses had gone to karaoke and things had heated up and people had gotten in trouble. I thought it was stupid because as long as you don't go as a group of horny teenagers of equal male:female ratio and get all liquored up, nothing like that is going to happen. But they saw fit to just eliminate the entire thing.
Galimo: I just wanted to comment about the human factor. Like you say, sometimes individual elders come up with silly rules that aren't specifically in any WT literature. When I was a Witness, I hated hearing about so-and-so elder doing this or that, because I felt that it was impossible for the WT Society to be responsible for the actions of every elder in every congregation.
What I realize now is that the WT Society is responsible, because it creates a culture of legalism. It is precisely because the WT Society creates such a large quantity of minute rules and asks publishers to know them and elders to enforce them, that elders and older sisters feel that they should take it on themselves to do the extra police work regarding skirt lengths and PG-13 movies. For example, imagine if, in the thousands of pages of literature it publishes each year, the WT Society emphasized using one's conscience and respecting the consciences of others. If that were made an important part of the culture, I think we would have a much lower rate of Gestapo activity and ad-hoc rules among the individuals in the congregations.
Because the Society is so directly responsible for the culture seen among Witnesses, I do hold them largely responsible for both positive and negative aspects of the human dynamics that develop within it.

In Japan, it was announced from the platform (all over, on many occasions) at District Assemblies that karaoke was inappropriate for Christians. Since I loved karaoke and honestly could not imagine how there was anything wrong with it, I snuck to karaoke places with a few friends anyway. But the thing is, we honestly had to sneak and be careful who we told about it. That is really and truly absurd.
