Heya Joker,

If you read this board at all you should know this by now, but I was not expelled. I left after experiencing the total shock of realizing it wasn't true. Whew! Talk about making your entire world turn sideways, inside out, and every other way. Then I realized that they weren't just wrong and innocent, they were actually harmful, so I DA'd as a way of casting my vote.

I know that this is a real event, but something seems awfully fishy about this news source. When's the last time you saw a headline that ended in an exclamation point? And how about this line in the blurb:

The Jehovah's Witnesses are accepted in almost every country in the world and are recognized as one of the top ten religions.

That's the vaguest claim ever. One of the top ten religions? Top ten what? What, the top ten "good"? Yeah, I'm sure the world recognizes them as that. The only top ten list I can possibly imagine it making is top ten literature producing.

Is it just me, or is this source a little sketchy?

Wow, Terry! Those are awesome! I need to listen to them carefully with headphones tomorrow!

I agree with you about minor scales being beautiful. I have also written music since middle school (lately I've only been doing arrangements, tho), and I have always been attracted to minor music, whether or not it is actually dark, although I do have a penchant for the dark and melancholy.

I'm going to have to ask you about your recording software/hardware setup later. I'm interested in getting set up to do some recording myself.

Now who says JWs aren't politically active? The next step is for them to understand that signing petitions and voting on any other cause is no different: you're trying to effect change in your world through peaceful means.

Would the world be a better place without religion?

i understand we all need guidance and some people need hope, even if it is not real.

but personally, i believe religion has caused so many hideous crimes against humanity that it is something we would all be better off without.. it really is too bad that religion has capitalized on humankind's need for a divine being to only abuse and control its fellow humans.. so, what do you think?

Someone said near the beginning:

It can, but only in that it offers education on some humanist matters, like showing love and empathy toward others. But since most religion combines the few good concepts it teaches with the rash of ugly teachings that have been enumerated in previous posts, I think that there are much better sources for education.

I do think the world would be a better place if children were raised with a strong foundation in ethics and reasoning, and taught to understand how their actions and attitudes affect others. This makes better people. The fact that religion sometimes accomplishes something somewhat like it does not convince me of its value. It is the education, not the particular context.

LOL. I can visualize that perfectly.

On the subject of transporters, you know, it's funny, I used to think when I was a Witness, if they ever develop transporter technology, the preaching hours are going to go way down. I mean, geez, driving was what got you 90% of your time. Pioneering? Impossible!

Ostensibly, of course, the line would be that now the same amount of time could simply be used more effectively in reaching people, but you and I both know that Witnesses would dread service even more if going out for two hours actually meant talking to people for two hours!

Letters to the WatchTower Editor???

did any of you ever write a letter to the wts regarding an article, and it got published in the back of the awake!

mostly, they only print letters that are in full agreement with their articles.

here's a thread for all of you to thank those who helped you make your way out of the org.

i'll start.. i'd like to thank my ex-fiance for the support that she had given me when i needed it the most.

when i was faced with the elders coming to give me a shepharding call, she had given me the encouragement to stand up to them, and tell them truly how i felt.

I would like to thank my dad.

As I was growing up, my dad was a critical thinker who enjoyed abstract concepts, and I learned rational thinking from him. Lord knows I would never have got that from my mom. When he left the organization when I was 15, I studiously ignored the rational disagreements he had with absurdities such as the global deluge, but the fact that he had left because he didn't believe it stuck with me - haunted me - for ten years. I thought about him often during the time I obediently refused contact with him. And I finally realized he was right.
