Celt, how did you get back so quick after Cheddar? Flying visit? Did you hitch hike again like Emans BBQ the year before last?

I've noticed something very strange recently and I don't know why, I am atracted to female foreign accents, particularly European or Russian. It's very strange, kinda makes the hairs on my neck stand on end.

I talk to the US all the time on the phone and different people are better or worse at understanding. Sometimes I say things "the American way" so people understand. It took me about two minutes saying the word "status" with no comprehension before I pronounced it "STADous" and made contact. Another time I spelt a word to someone saying "ZED" and immediately said, "err ya know, that's ZEE" and she replied, "oh I know what ZED is" LOL.

Am I a sad case, or what?
by LittleToe in.
at one point, this morning (gmt) i had 14 of the "last post"s on the top 20 active thread list (probably 15, when i post this).. i hope it says more for how quiet the board is on a saturday morning, and less about how obsessed i've become with the board, again.. maybe it's time for another wee spell away....

The Credit Card Shuffle.
by Englishman ina few weeks back, i noticed that virgin were offering a 0% interest rate for 6 months if you transferred the balances on your other credit cards to them.
i decided to take the plunge and go for it.
i moved over a few grand happy in the knowledge that i had "free" money for a 6 month period.. however, once i had done this, i then noticed that the interest rate on transferred balances was actually 2% more on their standard rate after the 6 month free period.

A credit card is a useful means of borrowing short term, provided you make it work for you, not against you. Properly used, a credit card can be a bonus source of interest free money. If you pay off the balance by the due date, you have up to 56 days free credit, money which can be earning interest for you in another account.
But if you actually need to borrow for longer than a few weeks, arrange for an overdraft facitlity with youre bank or building society (or US equivalent) because the worst interest rates by far are with credit cards.
If you really want to play the system have two credit cards, and make the payment dates 15 days apart. Each time you receive the statment for one particular card, start using THAT card straight away and stop using the other. This way you will gain the full 56 days free credit with each card.
Of course, one late payment will do away with all the benefit of interest earned this way. I suggest you only try this if you use Internet banking to pay them off and set the payment dates several working days before they are due to make sure they are paid on time.
I personally use a TESCO credit card which also pays me 1% back for everything spent on it at Tesco plus a further half a percent spent anywhere else. In a typical month, I have around 10 pounds to spend free of charge at Tescos plus around 500 pounds earning interest which I would not otherwise have, and it it always back to the zero balance by the due date.
Of course - this is how to use credit cards properly. The bottom line is - if you need to BORROW - DO NOT USE CREDIT CARDS - or you will simply be paying for the people like me who know how to use them.

Yes, there is a catch. In the small print you agree your information can be stored on various databases to prevent fraud and other reasons, one reason is which all potential companies can assess you for statistics such as "loyalty". If you change your credit card every x number of months over x years, your loyalty rating will go down and companies will start refusing you new credit cards, but they will not tell you that is the reason why.

Is the idea of immortality in any way possible?
by logansrun inthe traditional christian view of immortality hinges on some form of dualism -- the notion that your consciousness is not dependent on the brain and can survive the dissolution of the body.
modern science has not found any evidence for this whatsoever.
it seems rather likely that our consciousness and mental abilities are bound to our brains and their neuronal firings.

Well what I noticed about todays news was that the cloning of embroys is all about having "spare parts" available for future use. I can see a future world where the rich can afford spare body parts to double or triple their life span and the poor die.

Hi
As some of you know, I lost 5 stone on my own diet and have now been the same weight for a year. I have just joined a gym to build my muscle back up. I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about muscle supplements. I definately don't mean steroids or anything with nasty side effects. But when you do an internet search for supplements and start looking through the products, there just seems to be so much utter crap out there for up to 50 pounds a bottle, with wacky claims as to what they do and lists of incredible ingredients you've never heard of. Other than a high protein diet, has anyone tried supplements with any success?

Is the US spending more money than they have?
by JH inwe all know that the usa is a superpower, or should i say the only superpower, but even so, where do they get the money to do so much around the world.
they send their army across the planet to wage war,at a very hight price.
each cruise missile or jet fighter costs millions, and then they say they still have the money to rebuild the country.

Whatever happened to Bush's pledge to rid Africa of AIDS?
Bush committed 15 billion - a tiny fraction of the cost of going to Mars and all that is hoped to come out of it is that anti-retroviral therapy could become available on a much wider scale, while 30 million people in Africa have AIDS and 90% of people with AIDS in Africa do not know they are infected.
The cynical side of me says this idea did not fire peoples imaginations or improve Bushs' popularity enough.
