"Socialism does not rely on brutality and oppression to hold it together" What Nations do you cite as an example? (Good debate, by the way!) Well I am far from being well versed in political history, but elements of socialism have been implemented in a number of South American countries, but was consistently squashed by the USA under the guise of stopping "evil" communism (aka cutting into US profits from companies like The United Fruit Co.) Guatemala is a good example, but I'd have to have books in front of me to recite what happened. Even if I am wrong on that front, just because no one has bothered to correctly implement socialism does not make it evil. I would like to discuss this further, but I am about to take off for the New Year. Maybe next week.

Socialism does not rely on brutality and oppression to hold it together anymore than capitalism does. I'm not saying that socialism is the answer, I just find it odd that people still lump fascists, commies and socialists as one big evil group. I thought that died when Russia fell and it was obvious to everyone that it was a US brainwashing so they could fight the Russians and use the cover of "fighting communism" to install dictators where they had money interests involved. Guess not...

Need some advice
by dura-luxe ini knew this was coming.
mom's been going back to the kingdom hall for about a year now, and i figured that, much like my father, i would have to cut off all contact with her at some point.
it looks like now might be that time.

Any chance of getting a link to the blog? Then we can comment with either support or criticism. But as with any public forum, be prepared for both.
My first inclination, which could very well be wrong without seeing your blog, is to tell you to stop blaming your parents. Chances are they did what they thought was best for you and, as all parents, screwed up, maybe worse than most. Most often than not, the screw ups are not malicious but a mixture of love and selfishness.
Unfortunately, it is tough to realize the above until you have children yourself. Until then it is very easy to criticize the faults of one's parents and their "parenting."
I'm all for performance art, even bad performance art, but it seems ashame if it is at the expense of the feelings of those you love, or at least of those who spent a good chunk of their life in love and devotion to you.
Still would like to read your blog, though.

Thichi - Why do people link Socialist and Fascists together when they are not necessarily related?

Choosing another religion?
by asleif_dufansdottir ina discussion on another thread made me wonder about what happens when we finally come to the conclusion that the society is full of sh*t.
did you take some time to 'get your religious bearings' before contemplating joining another religion?
or, was it a strong religious belief that brought you out of the jws?

Thanks for the reply LT...
You stated:Sermon's can stimulate thoughts, moral, ethical and inevitably theological.
Can't reading a book do it more? I'd prefer to spend my time reading.Other aspects of the service are more directly involved in the issue of communal worship, which in some ways is easier than always worshipping alone alone.
This seems to leak over into the social aspect. The reason is you can no doubt worship alone, in fact, I'm sure you would agree that worshiping alone is a much more personal experience. So what about communal worship makes worshiping easier? No doubt it is the support and comraderie, which also carries the negative aspect of "fear of man" and external influences on your worship. So beyond the fact that its enjoyable to hang out with like minded people, I'm not sure how communal worship is any easier.
Please knwo that I don't mean to belittle your thoughts on worship, I'm just looking to see if you have any reasoning that might make me think differently than I currently do. -

Bush was the most admired man in the US...his stock has risen since then...He's not perfect...but he's doing a great job.
As your own report states, the current president is almost always picked as the most admired man in the U.S., so it really can't be a true reflection of how good he is doing. Bush is a stereotypical deceitful politician and I can't wait until he is out. And he has NOTHING to do with the current economy growth. If you say he does, I would like to see some action he has taken that has had direct economic results.

Mine was a crude, truncated description of my view on religion. But nevertheless, LittleToe, I'm curious of what your view on the purpose and good of a religion is? What do they offer you personally?
