I agree with Prisca whole-heartedly. Kids are a joy beyond compare! And the Bible tells us that they are perfect. After all, they are a gift from God. And he never gives a less-than-perfect gift!

and for the record i'm not talking about their religious beliefs, i'm basing my opinion on direct actions taken by the ones that i have had personal experience with.. thought some of you might be interested in the things that have been going on with me and jon's family.
Isn't that just like a Witness? So self-centered and egocentric (I love that word) that they can't see how they could possibly handling something in any but a loving, theocratic way. You've got to have a mighty big ego to believe that. And you've got to be mighty sick in the heart as well as the head.
I'm so sorry you have to go through all this. It's just plain wrong for JonJon's father and the local JW's to do this to you.
The only good thing about it is your firm resolve never to be a JW!

and, as we all ponder our past jw religion, and the events of the day, i need to take some time to address matters of my faith, as i look for some answers.. when adam was created, god did not wait for adam to play a guessing game and start praying.

Billigoat, I certainly don't dispute the benefit of positive thinking. However, when I first got sick or was first diagnosed, I was the happiest, most positive person I have ever known. After I started treatment I could go to bed feeling fine and wake up suicidal and find myself in the hospital later that day. It's been a roller coaster ride ever since.

And you, Englishman, should know that a reactive depression still involves a chemical imbalance. It is not known for sure if the imbalance is brought on by the illness or the illness is brought on by the imbalance. In my case, it is thought to be biological. Apparently, I have had it all my life. And antidepressants only give me some help. Just as people respond differently to different meds, some respond to therapy alone, some to therapy and meds, some to ECT, and some to meds alone.
It is a complicated, serous illnss. To say as some have (I'm not saying you have said this), that you can "pull yourself out of it if you really want to" may be intended to help but actually is very disheartening and painful for the depressed one to hear. I certainly would not have put my family through this if I could have done something about it.
One more thing about the meds. Some have expressed concern about how easily doctors say, "Take this and if it doesn't work we'll try something else." I know it sounds like the dr. is ready to prescribe tons of medicine without a second thought. It's just difficult to find the right med at the right dose. And some of us are considered to be "treatment resistant". Not that we deliberately resist help, it's just that our bodies resist the meds, making it harder to find the right one. I was told that 10% of people are treatment resistant.

No, Englishman, the depression doesn't go away even if I get "fired up" about something. If you had diabetes, or cancer, would that illness go away because you felt perfectly healthy for a few moments? Depression is a physical disease that manifests itself with physical, mental and emotional symptoms.

Careful! Your ignorance is showing! Before you go desparaging antidepressants and those who take them, I think you need to LEARN what you are talking about. Clinical depression is a serious illness. Yes, it can be a chemical imbalance. And yes, the brain does make chemicals. But if the patient's brain were capable of doing it's job correctly, there would be no imbalance, now, would there? And yes, the side effects can be serious too. But remember that every med has side effects. If a particular side effect happens to one user of, say, Drug A, it will be listed as a possible side effect in the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference).
Obviously, none of you have ever suffered from this illness. It is devasting. The isolation, lonliness, sadness, hopelessness, despair, etc. can go on and on and on with no end in sight.
Before you spout of so self righteous about this subject, walk a mile in my shoes.

I, for one, am MUCH happier now that I am no longer a JW. No one gets upset when I use my God-given free will to think for myself. And when I attend church, I see people whose joy in the Lord is complete and whose faith is alive in their lives. I never saw that at any Kingdom Hall I went to.
And don't Witness's have a higher rate of mental illness than the general population as a whole?
I don't need imperfect men who have never lived in the real world telling me how to raise my children or conduct my personal business or live my life. They don't know what they are talking about.
When some of the GB disagree with the others, does that mean that some of them are directed by Jehovah while others are not? How do they know who is and who isn't?

Don't forget that "many are called but few are chosen." Getting a jury duty summons doesn't guarantee you will be on a jury.
over the years, circuit servants and then circuit overseers came and went.
i can only recall a handfull because the rest were unimpressive or i was not real active during the visit of some.
most cos that i recall were humdrum with perhaps some single interesting feature or personality quirk.
