It was only when I moved 200 miles away that I saw the ?Truth? for what it was. In my original congregation I had genuine friends, everything was familiar, it?s hard to see beyond the norm. When I moved everything changed, I could make judgments on people on the inside and outside without any emotional baggage. I decided I liked ?Worldly? people better.
I also remember an elder telling me when speaking about a friend who was moving away ?A move normally makes them or breaks them??very telling.

filthy kingdom halls
by what_Truth? ini don't know if this is wt policy, but our hall had a policy of assigning bookstudy groups to clean the hall.
the few times my family actually showed up (along with anyone else) that the hall was always in a disgusting state, especially the bathroom.
the woman's washroom had the most revolting smell you could ever imagine.

DOF,
When I moved to this part of the country (Devon) it surprised me as well. We never had converted churches in the London area. -

To be honest the hall I went to was spotless, maybe too clean.
However I was in one congregation where the hall was an old church building complete with graveyard. By law the graves could not be removed.
The brothers would let the brambles and grass grow over so no one could see them.
I thought that was disgusting. -

What was your favorite thing about service?
by Dustin ini used to love break time.
especially if it was afternoon service, and we stopped at taco bell.
i used to be damn good at eating tacos in the car without spilling anything.

Nothing would get me to eat black pudding?yuk.
To be honest, since leaving a few years ago, I?ve done nothing the JW?s would consider as forbidden, aside from bad-mouth them. -

JW young people...on the move...to where?
by Gill inmy experience as a jw teenager was total repression and control from my parents and i know that the majority of my friends at that age in the congregations suffered the same.. now...what's happening?!.
i come home and find a regular full time pioneer smooching with my non jw son on the sofa.. i"m reliably told that jw youngsters are in the local pub after each meeting and have to be thrown out at chuck out time.. they seem to behave in a far worse way that some non bible believing youngsters that i know.. are they finally feeling their feet and the wtbts due a huge exodus in the next few years?.
i'm slightly embarrassed at the behaviour of some of these youngsters when i'm told what they've been seen getting up to.. or am i just getting old?

Why quotes from old publications are meaningful
by seattleniceguy inmost witnesses know that if you dig too hard in their older publications, you're bound to find strange, even ridiculous, quotes.
but they are trained not to put too much thought into these older publications.
if reasonable people could legitimately disagree with the wts at that time, then what does that say about "god's channel"?

Even now I find myself dismissing the older publications as evidence of corruption within the society. Why? Because as witnesses you are conditioned to think in terms of new light, it?s an inbuilt defence against seeing such falsehoods.
As a witness I would laugh at anyone using this approach to discredit the organization. This has always stopped or inhibited me from using such references.
SNG, you make a really good case for now doing so. Thanks. -

Long time apostate, first time poster.
by mtbatoon in.
just found this site today and as well as being amused, concerned and shocked at some of the stuff i?ve found here, reading the bios and posts of other ex jw?s has in a way made me feel a little bit less alone in the world.
don?t get me wrong, i?m not an emotionally scared loner, it?s like i?ve finally found someone else to stand outside morning assemble with.

Welcome Rico,
I know you must feel a lot of pain at the moment and I truly feel for you. It?s a cliché I know but it really does get better with time. It?s important to not blame yourself for the situation you find yourself in; it?s not your fault. Don?t blame your daughter either, mental illness is a horrible burden to carry at times. Its important to talk often about your daughter, never make it a taboo subject.
My Brother committed suicide when he was 21 years old I was a JW at the time.
I still hope to see him again
