  The BESTEST present ever! (NOT)

  after reading a few threads regarding the upcoming christmas season, i thought i'd post a funny story, and ask you to add to it.. if you've ever received a wacky present, or one you had to pretend that you liked, please post it.. about 5 years ago, when i first started celebrating christmas with hubby, i got a real shocker of a present.

  a deep fryer.. now, hubby was *very* proud of himself.

  you see, about three months prior to christmas we were going through costco (warehouse type store) when i noticed they had a nice little deep fryer.

  I have been buying my own christmas presents for years. Usually, if we have the money, Mr Andee and I will decide what we would really like to have. Usually it's one big thing, each. A few years ago, I wanted a Kitchen Aid Heavy Duty mixer, a la Martha Stewart. I followed the store ads, and when I didn't think I could get it any cheaper, I went and bought it.

  I was soooooooooo happy! I had been wanting one for years, and there was NO WAY I was going to leave it up to hubby to buy it! I didn't want to take a chance that he would get the wrong one. Not very romantic, I know. That is how we have been doing the Christmas thing for years. This way, I am NEVER disappointed.

  just nice to know that i'm not alone.

  i'm truly amazed and had no idea unitil yesterday surfing on a whim i decided to confront my past.

  it's a blessing for me and i feel another turning point in my life because now i have lots of people to talk to and i know now that i wasn't and i'm not going crazy and that it's not just me.

  Aaaah, Sweet Gossip

  gossip is nothing new... we hear it everywhere, at work, with friends, even on this message board.

  it's nothing special, and it will stay with humanity for a long, long time, if not forever.. however, if one claims to be in god's only organization on earth, part of god's plan for a *paradise earth*, then one must therefore be free of such *petty* things as gossip.

  at least that's what the gb says, right?.

  i haven't told this to very many people, so here goes.. when i was a child, my parents became jw's (i was almost 5), so i had celebrated christmas a few times, but have few memories of it, other than the bubble lights, and a huge tree and my grandparent's house.

  when we stopped celebrating it, i didn't really "get it", and i still believed in santa claus.

  i just thought he didn't come to our house anymore.

  My kids know that I go out and buy presents. My daughter is old enough now, that she does her own shopping too.

  However, there is always ONE special present under the tree, for each kid, from "Santa.

  My daughter also threw the big question to me a couple of years ago.
  Is there really a Santa Claus? I didn't want to lie either. I did the same thing you did, I responded with "What do you think"? She said she believe there was, and I just sort of nodded my head in agreement. This year, she announced to me that she still believes.

  I have something else to add.

  Born into the JW's, as a young child, it was always made very clear to me that there was NO Santa Claus. I remember feeling rather smug during holiday time when all my school chums were anticipating his visit, while I KNEW is was just their ole Mom and Dad wrapping presents and putting them under the tree themselves. I know now, that my smugness was to cover up my envy. Geez, I gave Jehovah another reason to incinerate me!

  Anyway, after reading all the responses on this thread, the absurdity of how JW's justify why it's so superior of them to teach their children that Santa Claus doesn't exist.

  From a JW perspective:

  Believe in demonized Smurfs.

  Believe in demonized garage sale items.

  Believe when someone does something bad, it's
  because they listen to Satan. Careful of him,
  he's that evil vapor that is always attempting to lead
  people astray.

  Believe that dragons reside in churches.

  However!!! Make sure that they don't believe in Santa
  Claus! He's a nice guy! Wouldn't want to corrupt my
  kid with THAT belief!

  I'm so grateful my kids don't have to deal with all that nonsense.

  Hi Mulan,

  Let them believe. Some brat on the playground will fill them in soon enough anyway .

  Even though my 10 year old daughter knows better, she still professes to believe. She wants to hang on to the magic of it. I see absolutely no harm in it.
