for newbies, who was carl olof jonsson?

the reason the date is important is because it is the starting date for jw chronology which leads to 1914 as the end of the gentile times, and the beginning of the last days, as jws understand it.

586 is interpretation and may be liked like the theory of evolution ( not saying that the comparison is congruent) but 539 is a historical fact. There are 2 schools of thought but wt 607 based on Bible interpretation is also valid. And there are solid reasons to conclude that the land lay desolate 70 years to pay back it’s Sabbaths. Archeology has not debunked wt 607. It stands same as creation. There is a great thread on this forum where “Scholar”argues against the interpretation of the stele that suggest 586. Wt has published as sbf highlights that wt is fallible but that doesn’t mean wt is equivocating on 607. We’ll see what happens sooner or latter.

“1975” still marks 6000 years from the creation of adam in wt calendar.

according to “all scriptures inspired” book, there is a gap between the creation of adam and the creation of eve and her marriage to adam.

it was at that point in time when eve was created that marked the end of the 6th creative day and the beginning of god’s rest, the 7th day as recorded in genesis.

if jesus memorial meal is meant to follow on from the jewish passover celebration, would someone explain to me why the jehovah's witness community are holding their "lord's evening meal" on tuesday 4th april; when the jewish community are not holding their 2023 passover until the 5th april 2023?

doesn't this mean that the jehovahs have got their date wrong?.

Jewish calendar I linked shows the last supper was celebrated on Thursday Nisan 13 evening( Nisan 14 morning) and not on Friday Nisan 14 evening ( Nisan 15 Morning). I’ve also cited Ibn Ezra.

But let’s have it your way Van and say the Samaritans were shunning her. The Samaritan law was irrelevant as is other religions.

In that case Jewish law applied and as I pointed out before, you victimize the sinner. Also, the Jews at that time were not under grace. They were under law. So when they broke the law, they had to pay the price and follow legal provisions for the adjudication of sin. People were not free to go around deliberately breaking the law of Moses with impunity.

Under grace, there is a loving provision when a Christian commits a sin and wants to repents but there is no loving provision from the church when a christian defiantly practices sin such as living a debauched or depraved life and practices sin.

You don’t grasp that Samaritan laws were not Jewish ( you worship what you do not know) The Samaritans were not Jews. Jesus only corrected the application of Jewish law. So whether or not there were loving provisions in Samaritan apostate practices Jesus only corrected the application of Jewish beliefs and practices and laws. And whether or not it was right or wrong to for the Samaritan religion to ostracize the woman it was not the jurisdiction of Jesus to correct it therefore legitimizing the whole religion. The judging is of Judaism at that time time and not the religions of others. How the samaritans practiced their religion is totally immaterial.

why do you think she would go to such length to isolate herself?

Because it was a shameful thing to do in her community and she felt ashamed. No point in explaining any further. Like someone walking naked through the street. You should realize you are naked and don’t blame others.

Even if you come to your senses later on and put some clothes on, you know people saw you.

The mere fact that she was alone in the heat of the day suggests that she was not appreciated or accepted by the other women in her community.

It appears she wasn’t banned from being there but she wasn’t brazen, she felt ashamed. Nothing was going to change her reputation —but God drew her to Jesus. How special she must have felt to have that privileged encounter with THE MESSIAH! And how jealous the other women must have felt, giving her courage to forgive herself and feel good about herself. She now had substance to face them. She could look at them without having to look down. Now, she could repent with dignity.

Van, the account doesn’t focus on whether or not she was being mistreated or not appreciated or whether or not any rebuke she was receiving was wrong. “ You spoke well, you’ve had 5 husband.” Even Jesus brought it up to her. And she knew she had a reputation. Don’t blame it on how people felt about her conduct. A respectable woman didn’t go around marrying 5 husbands and living with a guy in that society. The account doesn’t focus on that is was wrong for the society to have feelings about that. Seems to me she was beautiful enough for 5 men to marry her one after another so those men didn’t mind. The account focuses on her feelings.

In this case she wasn’t Mary Magdalene so her moral bankruptcy is defendable because she was married in all her previous relationships with men. Also factor-in that under Jewish law it was not viewed as moral bankruptcy for a man to have concubines and multiple wives so as a concubine ( not saying she was) she didn’t have to be married to the man. Also she was not a Jew and not really bound by Jewish law but Samaritan practices. Before the law of Moses, Moses father married his aunt, Abraham married his sister, Jacob married 2 sisters. A master could have sex with his slaves and captured women —all morally acceptable.

Even Jesus remarked though, 5 husbands! and living with a man now! But I don’t see her as a harlot or bankrupt , she obviously had issues.

It was God’s law that sinners were to be punished not man’s so when delegated authority punishes sinners God is vicariously punishing sinners and it is a misrepresentation to say that it’s hunky-dory to commit sins and religious authority is wrong for taking action and point to this woman as an example of being mistreated as if sexual immorality is right and any rebuke she may have gotten was wrong. The guilty becomes the victim and sin and depravity is sanctified. Zacheus the despised tax collector is another example of how people can repent and God’s love and mercy and compassion. Don’t use these examples to vilify the condemnation of sin (shun) because any ostracism came vicariously from God and condemn the righteous and victimize the sinner. ( It is so funny watching on the media how people living depraved lives act tike victims when society is outraged. ) The moral of the Samaritan woman’s story is that God understands and sees the heart and forgives and mitigates what a person did in the past and forgives like a father without holding a grudge. It’s not about it’s wrong to shun or punish wrongdoers.

I try reading. For example she articulated belief in the Messiah to come. That takes faith. Faith is a virtue.—One example of something I read in the Bible.
