Giordano, there is good and bad in being institutionalized but you have to try it to know what I mean. One gets used to it but the grass looks greener on the other side when you are there and when you leave one misses things about the institution.

there was no choice for females.
You are right but there were single sisters that were accepted. The problem was, who were they going to room with. So, the single sister that came to bb was accepted with her "fleshy" ( I hate to use that word ) sister together. The Ledley sisters for example. And single sisters too. Louise Borden for example and Carrol S.. And widow sisters too. Sister Di Cecca. But there were very few unmarried sisters.I don't remember if Laura Decker was also in bb before she married Jerry. But having a whole bunch of single females running around would have been a problem. A couple of very beautiful married sister I remember were Debby Barr and another Polish sister named Eva Wilson. I don't know if anyone remembers a single sister named Esther or Ester Lupiz. elderly, Mexican but didn't look it;she was always with Bro and sis Knorr.

There were lots of black females in the congregations. And a lot of cong were mostly black bros and sis and I felt they were the best congregations because they were generous and took care of the Bethelites with food with clothes with rides with money. But there were no interracial marriages at bethel. First marriage I remember in bb was mid 70s , white bro from bindery maintenance married a black sis.
Some of these young bros left bb to marry local females, some with 4 or 5 kids. One bro I knew was very involved with a sis with many kids. I told him that I felt that he was making the biggest mistake in his life.

Thanks for your post Sparky about the 4D.
So that explains it. Some bros that pioneered and got the 4D and got into some issues with the draft board before going to Bethel , BB would not accept them until they solved the problem without help from bb. But you needed a 4D to get in. You couldn't go to BB and then get the 4D based on being at BB. You have a great memory NewBoy.

Everyone was called down to be seen by doc Dixon at some point during the first six months or so and without notice, they just called you down. It was a quick visit. You filled out a questionaire about tobacco and drug use and then the good doctor told you to pull down your pants and took a look at your guy and at your rear end -only a look- then asked a couple of questions about your health and sent you back to work. The good doc Dixon saw every man's rear end and front in in Bethel.
There were neat jobs if you got a job change but if they you kept in a job such as the hot laundry, the loud gatherers, or the monotonous machines, and you saw others getting a job change, you felt punished.

It was the bobby fisher era and everyone in bb was playing chess until an article came out in the mag about chess being a game of war. It put a stop to the chess playing.

One last note: If you left before your time the Society would send a letter to your draft board stating that you were no longer a full time minister! What a way to treat volunteers.
I don't know if they had a choice or were required by law. Other religious orders had the same provisions, for example, the Catholics had a Brother position which was easier than priest and during that time a lot of draft age Catholics joined that order for the purpose of not being drafted and they had to stick it out. If they left, the found themselves parachuting out of a plane to Nam. - But not being able to pioneer if you left or kicked out of Bethel was not required by law. -

The draft ended in 1973 and I don't remember pioneer bros getting 4d after that when they registered. I only remember Bethel requiring that bros register but I don't remember 4d was required. What do you say NewBoy?
Very interesting posts Anasthasius and NewBoy.
I remember the bell going off in the morning to get up and go to breakfast, 19 distinctive dings. It rang a couple of times and if you waited till the last bell, you found yourself running to the table and sitting just before the gb spoke (hopefully).

and all I had to do was show my Draft Board the letter from the Society stating that I had been accepted as a Pioneer Minister and they gave me the 4D
Was that the same in every state? Because I know brothers that pioneered and got drafted and could not go to bethel until they cleared it up. And back in the day you couldn't go to bethel unless you pioneered first. I know bros that got accepted to Bethel but had problems with the draft and until that was solved they could not go.
Back in those days all young single male JWs pioneered and kept their 4D classification as long as they stayed in the Pioneer service.
100 hours a month was not easy.
