when they first started saying it was ok to go to college, I don't know, maybe 10 years ago, they were saying it was only for the guys, because they were the ones expected to provide for their families, indicating it was still not ok for girls. then they started saying it was ok for anyone whose goal was pioneering. since then, they talk out of both sides of their mouth about it. this is not new, and they will keep on saying college is not good, too. they say this because they cannot stop kids from going now, whether they ever intend to pioneer or not, and 99 out of 100 times, they do not. good for them.

New Light on Higher Education
by seeitallclearlynow inmy son made a point to tell me that they had what was to him a very interesting, different talk on the service meeting this week.
the presiding overseer gave a talk on the society's changed view of getting a college education.. he used the scripture which admonishes the reader to "acquire a heart of wisdom" and applied it to getting a 4 year college education for the sake of being able to support oneself at double the rate of pay with one's degree upon graduation.
this of course is only for the purpose of being able to then pioneer, only having to work a few days a week, thereby having the time for the field ministry.. such an annoying change - finally!

Yeah, it's just not COOL to be a JW anymore.
I assume most of the "weaker ones" know it's a cult and are momentarily trapped, leading double lives, etc. Like me!!!
Why are all the annoying 1970's style witnesses (hard core hard headed fanatics) in my family???

Advantages to being a JW
by MGonzales ini'd say that the biggest advantage of being a jw is that you learn the bible.
growing up a jw (never baptized), i had many friends (mostly catholic) who didn't even know where most books of the bible were even located.
jws really do learn and study the bible and this knowledge becomes very helpful once you start looking at the bible more objectively and not with wts binders.

The fact that I too was exhausted, burned out and just sick and tired of not ever measuring up to the requirements put out by the GB totally contradicts Jesus words above. I realized then that it was not God that I was serving and trying to please but the organization - the GB and their enforcers, the congregation elders.
Yeah!

Please bear in mind I'm not trying to offend anyone but am rather just posting my thoughts just as I've read the strong thoughts of many others on this forum daily regarding this type of issue.
I think a lot of people on this board view things through a type of lens still, though different from the WT lens -- a lens that tries to equate modern thinking with passages based on a more ancient world that didn't work the same as the comparatively cushioned one we live in today and also where people were under a different covenant -- one that was not as good. Basically what I'm saying is that I feel one's sense of justice may have been mightily different if that person were actually alive in the time period these events transpired vs. looking at the event from our current 21st century perspective.
This isn't to say I believe all pre-21st century thinking was "right" just because people may have felt things were "right" during those periods, such as when dealing with racism, for example. At the same time, I feel people might possibly not be keeping in mind even basic realities such as how survival worked in more ancient times and tend to view things through seemingly overly-modern psychoanalytical thinking, striving to judge things correctly by taking them highly out of context -- at least IMO.
From my understanding, for example, one's firstborn child was the most major blessing possible to the father. Likely the death of his firstborn with Uriah's wife was one of the most damaging punishments David could have suffered for the terrible sin he committed against Uriah, Israel, and God. And according to the law, a "life for a life" scenario seems to be involved even though it wasn't David's own life directly. I believe the covenant we are under now is a far better one and that we have forgiveness of sins much more easily than how forgiveness came about under the law. People had to sacrifice quite a bit for forgiveness under the law vs. accepting the better sacrifice of Jesus in their own place under the new covenant, whereas unlike the new covenant, the letter of the law is death, just as is spoken of in the NT. I do feel there are universal "rights" and "wrongs", and I also feel people's perceptions of what is right and wrong is highly based on how they are taught to view right and wrong (even if via recent peers) and therefore may not be totally accurate indicators of what actually is right and wrong if there is such a thing as universal "right" and "wrong."
I'm not trying to start a debate (and don't even have the time to). I just wanted to state a difference of opinon but agree with the majority of posters' views regarding using the Bible and other means to undermine the WT as being the sole channel of God to people.
I don't know. That's like saying it's perfectly acceptable for a parent to be abusive to his kids from a first marriage and be a saint to his kids from a second marriage, because culture began to frown on parental abuse and laws changed to make it illegal. No. It doesn't jive. But if you put it into the context of it being dreamed up and written down by humans instead of being "inspired" by "God", then, yes that makes sense in the way you are looking at it.
This is an interesting thread.

Media interest in Australia
by Lehaa ini have great news.
i've been contacted by the channel 9 sunday program.
they are interested in talking to as many people as possible about our experiences with the jw religion.

good on you, Lehaa!
Sex abuse is definitely a problem, but people should be made aware of a lot of other things, too. It's good to see your community is trying to help people become aware of dangerous cults like this one, which grossly misrepresents itself as innocent and pure.

the love of money is the root of all evil? or is it?
by zen nudist in.
i have not see anyone mention this..... but it seems to me that money is the one unifying force the world over, as more and more countries become just different aspects of the corporate world world peace seems more likely than anything religion has ever been able to accomplish... war is bad for business over all which is something you dont hear with regard to drug trafficking.... the more an area is dominated by one drug dealer the more peaceful the neighborhood as he finds violence on his turf to interfer with his money.

maybe that saying is true. religion wouldn't exist if there wasn't gobs of money to be made from it.

I heard a good trick was to draw a chalk outline on your driveway and sprinkle thier brochures around it on Saturdays (or whenever they showed up at your place)...
Never tried it though. So many comments to read, I didn't get through them all, but this was my favorite. How funny!
It seemed like lots of posters knew a lot about JWs they way they said things made me wonder. How many people say "copy of the Watchtower" and "numbers decreasing"? That sounded like JW-speak that other people wouldn't use, so it makes me think there were a lot of closet ex-JWs on that one.

A comment I heard tonight
by Generic Man intonight i heard one of the most cruel and twisted comments i've ever heard at the platform.
the topic was the apocalypse and whether or not children will be slaughtered.
through one side of his mouth, the po stated that the bible is not clear on the matter, while out the other side he pointed to all those old testament accounts where children were killed.

I'm shocked that before this thread, I had never even noticed Schizm before. What a freak.
