Oleg had travel insurance when he came here. It covered his dialysis, though did not cover organ transplant. The Texas Transplant Institute and doctors took Oleg on as a charity case. My being the donor didn't need any insurance.
Oleg comes from a relatively poor family. His parents are divorced. His mother being an alcoholic disappears for months at a time. His father does odd jobs and watches over a small parking garage at night. In order to drink the water from their pipes made of asbestos, they first draw the water to a small trough behind the house and let it settle for a day or two. Once the sediments have fallen, they skim the water with a pail then boil it. After it cools, they let the sediments fall again, then poor the water into plastic containers and freeze it. Oleg says something about freezing it, forces even more sediment to be forced the bottom again. They take the frozen block out and cut the ice above the sediments. Now they can drink the water.
