i am meeting a coworker tonight at a coffee shop for a "bible study".

it started out that she was interested in my past and my current questions / viewpoints and we were just going to visit.

now she is referring to it as a "bible study" which implies that she thinks i need to be taught.

Okay, if you're sure you really want that.

Let's start with my biggest question / concern. Suffering. I can't imagine that a God that loves his creation would allow the horrible things to go on that do. I heard on the news about a guy that got arrested for having sex with his 4 year old relative. I cannot imagine how he could allow that to happen. And why? According to the Bible we inherited sin from Adam and Eve. Because they, when given free will, did not "pass" a test given by a God who, if he is almighty, should never have needed the test in the first place, then humans are tortured with pain and suffering? It just doesn't seem right to me. And why would he have not scrapped the whole creation thing, realizing that their choice to go against him was a flaw? The same with the Devil. An all-knowing God would have known that he would turn against him.

Honestly, nothing makes sense to me. This is just the beginning of my questions. I would give anything for just one answer that sounds logical....

I was raised as one.

I guess you're right. I could read it from a new perspective. Maybe starting from the beginning isn't such a good idea. I can't get past how none of it in an "Adam & Eve / Noah and an arc" sort of way makes any sense to me.

I've been thinking a little more about it. If I'm not convinced that the Bible is the word of God then why waste my time reading a fairy tale?

If I were going to start at the beginning and read about Adam and Eve I would already hit a road block. I can't see how a God that obviously made a flaw in his creation for them to choose incorrectly when tested would allow that creation to continue in a flawed state with added "inperfection". Why not scrap the whole thing? If God is most high and almighty then he would have known that his creation would not stay true to him when tempted. And to allow life as humans to continue in a punished state where people have pain and suffering is absolutely unloving and unjust.

Honestly, that is just the beginning of my doubts. I would have to truy believe in the accuracy and purpose of the Bible to even continue reading at that point.

Does this even make sense to anyone but me?

I don't even know where to begin with that. How do you know that you have the most accurate translation? Keep in mind that I was a JW for a long time so I am very familiar with what the Bible contains. It seems like I am familiar enough to at least start pondering the question of whether it is God's word.

So you just accept that you don't have feelings either way? How do you do that? I feel like I need some sort of belief system and don't really have a direction that I "want" it to go.

Spike: It went pretty well. She was pretty open to hearing my concerns and questions. She did not have any answers as expected and said that most of what I mentioned she had not ever thought of.

I am meeting a coworker tonight at a coffee shop for a "bible study". It started out that she was interested in my past and my current questions / viewpoints and we were just going to visit. Now she is referring to it as a "bible study" which implies that she thinks I need to be taught. I believe I screwed up in agreeing to this thinking that someone else may be on the same quest for clarity but now I'm just trying to collect my thoughts on the issues.

The thing that we are going to talk about today is the bible and its authenticity and whether or not it is the word of God. I tend to be sceptical about it.

I guess what I am wondering is what everyone else thinks on the subject. Any nuggets of wisdom that you want to share regardless of what you believe about it?

This is probably the only real discussion about it I will get today.

Gaming Addiction

just curious, has anyone ever dealt with a gaming addiction or had someone they love that is addicted to online gaming?

(world of warcraft in particular) how did you handle it?.

As far as your husband's addiction goes, I would just try to get him to focus on more fulfilling things in life. I don't know if you're into many outdoor activities, but that's pretty much the antithesis of gaming. Also, friendship is a big factor. Many people (not all) are into MMORPGs because they are lonely. Does he have any good friends? Do you guys go out together and hang out with other friends?

We used to but he seems to prefer the gaming environment to spending time with other "real" people. Less effort, I guess.

In the past he has gotten upset and then within a week or so thought about it and cancelled his character, etc. The problem is that he always returns and when he is all caught up in the excitement of the game he doesn't think it is a problem. I guess that is how addictions work.... denile first.
