they would down play 2014 as not scripturally significant. Not because it isnt, but because it would remind older JWs still clinging to life how WAY OFF THE 1914 "last days" doctrine was. Sense the 1995 remix I think they will never have a date again. THat really sux because it is our only claim to fame and gives us a purpose unlike today where nothing matters.

If JW's were to set another "Armaggeddon" date , what would it be? 2030? _?
by booker-t ini was talking to my jw friend the other day and he was telling me that armaggeddon is right around the corner because of all the things going on in iraq and that he feels that pres.bush fits into bible prophecy because he feels that 666 equals george herbert bush.
i fell on the floor laughing because my friend was serious about it.
i said i know the watchtower is not teaching that bologna and he said no they were not but this is his own interpretation.

Joining School Board - Will I get DF'd?
by confusedjw ini was asked to fill in on our local school board as an elected board member could not finish their turn.
i thought about for a day and decided to do it.
it requires that you are a registered voter, at least in our town, which i am.

I believe only partisan voting is taboo. I dont even think you have to ask the elders for "council" on non partisan politics, but like all things your local elder body decides how far to pry into your life. The bigger problem is their is no watchtower approved defense yet for individuals in the cong stumbling people ( Jesus says otherwise, and they allows themselves to stumble people with out reprisal). So the elders can say while there is nothing wrong with being on the school board or voting on it because they have complaints about people being stumbled by your position you should (ie have to or be stripped of "priviledges") step down.

Lets take the term "bad light". It is a real telling JW term. Things the wts have said the bible puts in "bad light" are jehovah, christianity, doing business with JWs, hanging out (yikes i had no idea), jesus, Jewish rulers, and the list goes on. If you search "bad light" in the wtlib you find the wts says lots of things are in "bad light" even things the wts promote.
THe best synonym for "bad light" I can find is stereotype. For example 911 put islam in a bad light. It does not mean that there is anything wrong with islam, but it has a negative stereotype of terrorism attached to it. So like "hanging out", birthdays are in "bad light" because bad things can happen (probally because of too much booze back then). There own argument implodes because many JWs hang out. Hanging out is not a dfing offense yet it is rated the same as birthdays. Weird eh?

Sorry blondie it is an "FoR". It does not say weither a b-day is a false religious belief or violates a bible priciple. It simply says "bad light". Oddly out of the 3 birthdays or so in the bible dogs are refered to many more times and in much worse light yet many JWs own dogs. Go figure?

Amac there was a QFR that said it was a conscience issue if there is no modern pagan connections. The thing is the QFR fromover 10 years ago was different and totally ruled out any personal choice. So there has been a change. How much of a change in the day to day lives of JW is hard to gauge.

Ill tell you the truth.
Yes and No.
Yes they said (this july) that birthdays and x-mas and other holidays were okay if they did not have pagan rituals connected with them in your neck of the woods (I guess that depends on your view of pagan). That noted JWs in my area have did memorial day, 4th of july (going to fire works shows), thanks giving, and B-days sans fan fair and decorations for a while. Graduations oddly are celebrated like birthdays and can get quite wild. Baptisms were celebrated in simular fashion until the CO threw the book are us. I guess it is the decorations that must be pagan. In an odd twist worldly people are abandoning holloween.
Officially I believe it is for the jw's concience to decide as long as it does not stumble anyone in the area (including wordly people). Since stumbling people can get you DFed it is more about does anyone know about it or object to it where you live.
Thats the real truth people celebrate what they can get away with. Usually with out decoratioons so they don't have to destroy incriminating evidence. Reminds me of the stories of bookstudys in banned lands. Where they would put up decorations so if they got caught they would say it was a birthday.

The problem is JWs is not a cult. It is a comic book club that thinks its a religion. Maybe he could put it in a segment "Hobbies people take too seriously" you know you can have trekkies, civil war renactment buffs, comic book collectors, beanie baby freaks, and JWs.
