Thanks ThiChi, I enjoyed reading the quotes from St. Thomas, although Thomas missed a very important statement from God.

Eccl. states that there is a time for peace and a time for war ... so was is not unlawful. The Hebrews came running into town, so to speak, after a 400 year vacation in Egypt (just kidding, slavery is no picknic) ... and then proceded to route out the people dwelling in the land ... what sin did these people commit? They got in the way of Israel ... kind of the ay our buildings got in the way of Islamic homicide pilots.

Yep ... I think Thomas needs a reality check. Too bad he is deceased. Then again, by dying he paid his wage for his own sins.

First, the Bible teaches that God is always the same forever. Therefore, killing is not beyond the scope of the God of the Hebrews or Christians. One only has to read Revelation (Apocalpyse) to see that God is not done killing yet ... Jesus Christ himself will ride on a White Horse and finish what daddy started. In Israel, God even has children executed for making fun of a prophet. He has the Israelites murder innocent women and children, and even babies and livestock in order to purify the land of heathens ... not much different than the present Islamic God called Allah. On the otherhand, maybe one can say that the God of Israel was justified in such actions. Maybe so. Maybe he was having Israel kill terrorists. Who knows?

Second, you all forget that God refers to the secular government (Caesar in the case of the Apostle Paul) as his M-I-N-I-S-T-E-R ... for EXECUTING JUSTICE with the SWORD ... get a clue brain-dead ones ... you are orderd by the same God of Christians to pay tribute and HONOR to these secular governments lest YOU TOO become a subject of their justice. Read Romans and figure it out oh looney toons that God is not a God of pacifism.

Third, and most important ... you conveniently, likely deliberately, and dishonestly totally fail to discuss CORNELIUS ... remember this faithful gentile who prayed for God's guidance, etc. And what happened, the Holy Spirit came upon Cornelius and his whole family ... and then the Apostle Peter was dispatched, albeit with resistence on his part because he loathed filthy, unclean gentiles, and Peter was required to minister to Cornelius ... and Cornelius and his whole family were baptized and lived happily everafter as Christians ... and, what was oh sooooo special about Cornelius? He was a ROMAN CENTURIAN ... yes, not only a member of the Roman Army, but a master and commander of men trained to kill ... and the Romans has no qualms about killing anyone that got in their way ... including Jesus Christ, who was killed as a favor to Jewish leaders ...

Fourth, sooooo ... what, didn't Cornelius run out and sign up as a conscientious objector and get out of the Roman Army? You will be very hard pressed to find and Biblical verse or any secular historical record of what happened to Cornelius ... what then can we conclude? That if the Bible is inspired, and if God is sending us any message, it is that he has no standard as evidenced by his silence on what happened to Cornelius .. and if you read a little Roman history, you find out that there is no resigning from the Army ... the only way out was death. The Bible is silent on what happened to Cornelius, and that is what you brain-dead one should be too.

But you whine that Jesus counseled Peter about using his sword, to put away his sword, for those who live by it will die by it ... so therefore, you conlcude, that Christians must be conscientious objectors. First off, Jesus did not say it was wrong or unChristian to use a sword ... he was instead pissed at Peter for MISS-USING his sword ... Peter had no business taking out his temper tantrum on the servant of the High Priest for simply delivering a message. And Jesus never said that Peter was not to carry a sword ... rather he was to simply put it away and just don't "live by it" or you will likely die by it. AND, last but not least, if having a weapon was so bad, why in the hell did the Lord Jesus Christ allow the Apostles to carry swords around for three cottinpicken years? ... what was that all about? They carried swords for several reasons, but primarily for protection from wild animals and highway robbers. But couldn't Jesus simply call upon the legions of angels to protect him? Of course he could, but he chose instead to run around with a bunch of sword carrying dessert thugs. So get a clue maggots!

In conclusion, this is a debate that the Bible is not 100% clear on ... but the Bible leans far more in favor of war and then toward pacificsim ... and it is all subject to interpretation ... so if you don't like war and feel it unChristian, then by all means do as I did in 1969 and sign up as a conscientious objector. (Today, I have a different view and would gladly serve if I had good health and knew which end of the rifle to hold.) Or you can as least show respect and appreciate that there are Christians who rightfully disagree with you, and having the same right to interpret the Bible differently, have the equal right to honor soldiers who are their sons and daughters, especially those soldiers who die in war ... and honor them in their churches, just as Christians today honor the Roman Soldier and Army Officer, Master and Commander - Cornelius.

See ... now was that so hard.

they were all fascinated and wanted to know which cult i had belonged to.

There are people who stop going to church who fear they will go to hell ... this is like some JWs who stop going to meetings, they fear they will die at Armageddon. They are not really ex-JWs, they are simply JWs who have become inactive.

I don't know if you are joking or a brain-dead moron - but, I sense you are joking.

Amazing, it looks like you don't know anything about those numbers. The Catholic Church counts baptized infants as members.

Those "infants" are people who grow up to continue to be Catholic ... in my case, I eventually left the Church. Nonetheless, the Catholic Church does not count inactive members in their ranks when reporting their membership. The only time a baby is counted is if its parents bring the baby to church. Th only purpose of counting infant baptism is that the Church wold treat me as Catholic were I to return.

And the Mormons count missing people, and if there's no proof of death, they count that person as a member until they reach 110 years of age.

I know that Mormons have baptism for the dead, but I never heard of counting them in their active membership. And the 110 year thing is new to me. For both Mormons and Southern Baptists, 50% of those members are inactive.
I can't agree, especially in the case of Southern Baptists. However ... here is the proof ... MONEY ... if all those members were missing, dead, or babies, then where does all that money come from? The Catholic Church is wealthy beyond the Watchtower's wildest dreams as are the Mormons and the Southern Baptists are doing quite well. AND ... every time I have visited a church, be it Catholic, Mormon, Baptist, pentecostal, Presbyterian, Christian Reform, etc. their services are full, and they are growning, talking about expanding the church building, or buying more property to build ... and they are hiring more pastors, and increasing the number of Sunday services ... so, Great Babylon as the Watchtower likes to label the chruches, is doing anything but drying up.

published the one and only article they ever published about einstein's theory of relativity.. einstein's theory is in the news now as the gravity probe b has recently been launched in order to measure the "frame dragging" predicted by general relativity theory as the probe orbits the earth.. if i remember correctly the 1969 awake article questioned whether einstein's theory was correct.

i doubt very much that there was anyone then, or even now, at bethel who was even remotely qualified to question einstein's theory, but, then again, lack of qualifications hasn't ever held the wt back from writing articles.. the wt library cds only have awakes going back to 1970, so i will have to find a bound volume if i want to read that article again.. anyone else here interested in einstein's theory of gravitation?.

Jim-- I stand by my statement about "high school graduates". Your experience is positive, as it appears that you may have been exposed to the classic "10%" of kids who actually acheive the competence that US schools make available to those who work at learning. It seems like I get the other 90% here.

I wasn't suggesting you should not stand by your statement, nor was I debating you. Rather, your initial comment was more global, and I was citing some exceptions. Otherwise I agreed with you.

I guess the statement appears a bit "broad brushing". I guess my frustration is due that the skill set I teach also requires a person to have a appitute for logic and deductive reasoning. If the folks I train can't reason and evaluate cause and effect, well, the may end up dead. (I work in High Voltage and Extra high voltage transmission and distribution lines).

Yep! You have a valid point. We had a man fried inside an 800 amp draw-out breaker ... not a pretty sight.

I have worked in a trade union who expected appretice line men and electricians or other technicians to be able to solve a basic variable equation like Ohm's Law.

Most electricians I have worked with seem fairly competant ... sometimes felt they knew everything and talked down to engineers. Most did not.

Yea- Albert was a frustrated Clerk in the Patent office. Some folks figure he may have had ADD or some other learning disability. For my money, Nicolas Telsa (The brain at Westinghouse) or George Steinmetz (Edisons hired- gun brainiac) brought a lot more to the table.

Yes ... and Niels Bohr (spelling) ... he was the quantum guy who Einstein made the famous remark that God does not play dice.

That's very interesting, if I understand it (which is questionable). But if you are saying these particles are connected on some sort of axis, I'm surprised.

No, I am not saying that, nor was I dealing with quantum theory. I was illustrating a point of energy transmission. Mass and energy are equivalent in Einstein's world, hence E=MC 2

So, theory has it that objects elongate or shorten, depending on the phenomon at work, as they are in motion or better stated accelerating. So, if you were to tug on the million mile "rod" I described above, it would appear to the observer to elongate, because it would take 5.4 seconds for the energy to transmit through the mass to the far end for it to respond. Likewise, if you push on the same "rod" then it would appear to shorten until the energy reaches the far end. This is different then the quantum theories related to simultaneous actions of nuclear particles.

My understanding (which I think I've mentioned is weak) is that these particles operate on a quantum level, and are therefore only there part of the time or possibly probabalistically there all the time or none of the time etc.

Yes. An example of this is that theory has it that a partical in the anti-matter universe will react at the same time in a mirror image fashion with respect to spin.

Well, under these circumstances, surely an axis that connects them is equally probabilistic and vague. It's hard to imagine what the connection between them would consist of under those circumstances. HOpe that makes sense, it's probably a stupid point anyway, but I'm trying to understand.

I will dig through my references and see if I can find some interesting examples.

I teach basic electrical theory for an apprenticeship program. I am always amazed how "high school graduates" have no understanding of basic science and concepts of mass, energy and time.

I was an electrical engineer for twenty-five years, and worked in engineering, construction, plant operations, and material science research and testing for nuclear power stations. I find your statement only partly true. We would have "high school" interns at our plant or at test labs, and I found them sharp and up to date on theory. But if I ran into a high school kid outside that context, and they were not into science, then yes, they seem to have a lack of basic understanding of physics.

"Thinking" and "thought" are a lost art in our times. Seems we forget that most of the "breakthroughs" in technology were brought to us by farmers and blacksmiths in the 1800's. The pure scientists and theory guys are great... but common sense manages to find application most every time.

I don't agree with this statement. I agree that farmers etc. were in the middle of inventions, but many times those who advanced technology were well educated, and left the farms for other things. I don't think Edison, for example, was a farmer. The only reason that many inventions came from this sector is that farming dominated most cultures until the industrial revolution. Around the turn of the century, as most workers left farms and moved to cities, and developments in technologies shifted. Today, universities with their "pure science and theory guys" are out there with inventions and technological advances every bit as much as any other sector.

Btw: Einstein himself was not a farmer but worked in a Patent office. He had trouble getting into school and balancing his checkbook. There is belief that his wife, who was a well educated person in physics and math, developed the general and special theories of relativity. Back in those days, because women were not given proper recognition in these fields, he was given the credit and received the Nobel prize. The best evidence for this is that he gave a large share of the prize money to her. They were divorced when he received the Nobel prize, so there would be no need for this sharing of the prize unless she had something to do with developing the theories.
