XQ: From an earlier post you had asked me, what is my problem with a cult? and amac: What is dangerous?
One problem with the cult is - when a mother is made to feel, by the cult's beliefs and actually verbalizes to her child, " I would rather see you commit suicide than to leave "the cult". (True story)
The parent holds dear the scripture that speaks of " it is better never to have known the truth, than to turn aside from it."( you know the one I mean) - so kill yourself .
Russia's concern, as noted in the news item posted by Garybuss at the beginning of the thread, speaks of "the inciting to suicide."
i stopped by the building site last week and talked to one of the men there and he said it was scheduled for this comming weekend.
they had three trailers parked there, i remember one was a kitchen to prepare food, forgot what the other ones were.
there are 5 campers parked there now.
It is a construction site where you will see no buff shirtless dudes, and all the t-shirts they do wear will be of a homogenous sort, with no logos or pictures on them. If they show up with one other than that, they will have to turn it inside out, or go home. If there are any women on site, they will not be showing any leg, as in shorts.
can anyone tell me the reference where the following statement occurs?
"god's word reminds us that jehovah's day will arrive with shocking suddenness.
hence, our yeartext for 2004 reflects jesus' deep love for his disciples, whom he wants to preserve through "the great tribulation.
Cameron,
Thank you for the book info. It is next on my list after I return the current 14 I have checked out from the library!

XQ: Don't know your background, but any JW would know that the word, INCULCATE is heavy in the JWspeak. And related to the conversation at the moment I mentioned it was, that it was interesting to see, that in place of the word "inculcate" the first definition in the thesaurus is BRAINWASH.
That is what we as parents are commanded to do to our children.

XQ: yes, and I refer to it often and I know my fingers and mind spelled synonymous incorrectly the moment I posted.
Who said thought control is limited to religion?

amac:
I have discovered that when a person is in a "cult" - as we were all our lives - we didn't know it as such at the time. Did you know the organization you were serving in at Bethel and blah, blah, blah - was utilizing the methods of control that makes it synonomous with a cult? I didn't. But I do now. I am not quite sure what angle you really come from in having left the organization.
In any case, I think you might find interesting the August 8, 1988 Awake with the cover article of, "IS YOUR RELIGION A MATTER OF CHOICE?" Of course it was an issue we were presenting to people at the doors to try to get THEM to examine THEIR beliefs/religion and not be afraid to make a change if it was a religion they had been BORN INTO, like many here. I was intriqued to read it NOW, with a new mindset and I swear, someone on the writing staff was actually addressing it to JW's to make them think and get out of the cult.
I mention it here because it addresses the thought of what we teach our children should they be able to make their own choices in beliefs.
In this post I wasn't addressing the banning aspect. I think that has been covered well already. I don't purport to have the answer.
As far as condescension - it comes along with the JW territory - some were trained well I guess :)

amac: Apparently you are not familiar with how cults operate. Have you researched this subject?
Are children who are born into the JW religion, given the freedom of making a choice of how their mind is being trained? Prior to the 18 year old mark, that is? Do you know how many young ones LEAVE at that age? Do you know how many parents threaten their young adults with having to move out of home if they do not conform to the mind control beyond that age? Friends in our hall knew their children were literally going to live under a bridge if they chose not to accept the mindset any longer. Do you think that is a healthy atmosphere for a young mind to develop under? This happens in every congregation in the world so I doubt you can deny it.
