  Why are Witnesses better at being "Mean" than being "Nice"?

  if the elders tell the congregation to shun someone, they will do a good job at it.. if the elders tell the congregation to be good to one another and forgive one another, it doesn't always happen.. if someone is in need in the congregation, it doesn't mean that they will be helped.. so, why are the witnesses better at being mean or insensitive, rather than nice and caring and generous?.

  my sister is not a witness.

  she is of another religion, and when someone in the congregation needs help, they go full speed ahead to help.

  Your question reminds me of a little social psychology experiment I did with an 8th grade Social Studies class. I had a volunteer leave the room and instructed everyone else to stand and face the back of the classroom. The volunteer was then told to come back into the room - and sure enough, after about 15 seconds the volunteer, without asking what was going on, stood and faced the back of the room.
  
  Doing what others are doing, even if there is no explanation, appeals to a part of us which feels we must belong to the group. When there are explicit directions to follow, independant action is further undermined.

  yep, as i'm tapping away here i started to hear the gentle roar on the patio roof - it was a shower!

  and the water's free!.

  looking out the window i marvel at the richness of the green - the green leaves on the trees and bushes in the backyard, the green of the grass - and it's various shades too!

  If I sit quietly and simply observe it, whatever weather is happening right now is just fine. When thinking about it, however, I enjoy a steady patter of rain on a summer night. When I was a kid I would sleep in a screened in upstairs backporch, and that type of weather was the best for sleeping - the sound and the smell was so soothing.

  no i haven't read the replies to my last post although i'm finding it hard to resist.. but let me just add some things.

  there is no doubt that some of you 'apostates but you don't even know it' thought you have given some very clever respones.. just to clarify, i've had my share of the world and i'm glad i'm out of it, you however are hanging around on a jw site this is my first and last day of looking on here - and i'm only on here to wnd you lot up, .

  how easy was it really - i'm off sick, how many of you just haven't got anything better to do.

  Your "brain" needs some basic re-tuning. Learn to use the proper words if you want to be taken seriously.... Don't you mean to say, "I have my own brain and not one of you morons could affect me."?
  If you really had your own brain, and used it, you would be very much affected. The brain you are using is the product of someone else's thinking - now that is truly sad, and not funny at all.

  Indeed, what are you looking for? And who is doing the looking? In other words, "Who am I?" - this is the most profound question that can be asked. Finding the answer will complete the puzzle, and what is found is what is looking - consciousness itself. You are looking for what you really are, consciousness.

  i used to love to dance and sing.

  i could dance my arse off (black folk style).

  I used to make my own gunpowder and fashion homemade fireworks. Can you imagine that? Today if I did that I'd get arrested as some sort of security risk. I also used to love going to the local dump and shoot rats with my lever action .22 - I would always trudge through the garbage to examine my kills. I also loved to make blow guns and target shoot with it.
  
  In looking at the above paragraph it would appear that I was obsessed with violence of some sort or other, but I wasn't.

  Wow - I've been following this thread for some time, and I cannot believe what I'm seeing.

  What presumption! Have you crawled inside JT's mind to know this for a fact or do you only have your assumptions? How can I know for a fact that you are being honest? Because you say so? See what I mean? James can come right back and say to you that he is being honest and you wouldn't believe him because your mind is already set against believing him, your mind is made up. A declaration from him about his honesty wouldn't sway you at all, would it? So how can you expect others to accept your declarations of honesty? I can't crawl inside your mind just as you can't crawl inside his.

  James is attempting to point to what cannot be pinned down by anything the mind (carnal or "spiritual") defines. Any explanation is conceptual - it cannot be the thing being described. He is simply pointing people to directly and consciously experience "that" in which mind appears. Mind is mind, and as long a mind is attempting to grasp conceptually what "that" is, "that" will be overlooked. "That" is the foundation for everything, and when mind no longer interferes with "that" the underlying unity of creation is revealed - there is no longer a "this and that", only "that". Mind is the great divider of "that" and creates separation. Your mind has created this separation, and the unwillingness to directly see this for yourself maintains this separation. This is where religions and philosphies arise, in this separation, and this is the battleground for those who remain trapped in this separation. Whether this battleground is defended by an institution (religious or philosophical) or an individual egoic identity, the result is the same - separation.

  I would like to add that your tone masks a hostility, perhaps unconsciously on your part, that is quite grating.
