I listen to his podcast. That talk was great! Showed me that other nutters out there were reading Satan into things too, not just JWs.

by stuckinarut2 inthis thread is inspired by the great thread pale.emperor recently featured here on the forum about the things our overzealous parents banned while we were young.. seth andrews (a former fundamentalist christian broadcaster - now host of 'the thinkingathiest') just released this great talk!
so many things he speaks of will sound familiar!

God is our help, not “a burden”
by venus insir julian huxley (one of the great pillars of modern neo-darwinism) may be a symbol of people who feel god is a burden because he wrote: “the god hypothesis .
is becoming an intellectual and moral burden on our thought.
" therefore, he concluded that "we must construct something to take its place.

I can find fault with numbers 1,2, and 3. If you can't see that anybody would find fault with them, perhaps you have a rafter in your eye preventing you from seeing things. Sounds just as blind and culty as the JW baloney we all left behind.
Living in the now and enjoying the present is good though. After all, it's all we have.

You have to be a member to watch the video.
The shirtless guy is just a pic where someone compares the antics to modern rock concerts.

I can't believe that people that claim to work in the psychological field above would get into the game of comparison because someone else might have it worse, trying to negate the feelings of a young lady. It blows my mind.
Her parents aren't just mean to her, there's been some physical abuse, the way they blackmail her constantly to become a JW is emotional abuse. You should be able to see that. She's talked about eating disordered issues on here. She just said that she cries daily and you're essentially just telling her to suck it up and not be a baby because it could be worse? Unbelievable.
I do think that mental and emotional toughness should be developed to some degree, but not to the degree of denial that is being recommended so much on here through these comments. Denial for an extended period of time is not healthy. She's already done so for years. But hey, the parents are hooking her up with a cell phone and might help with college as long as she does what they want and does it online so as not to have contact with worldly people all the while attending meetings and being active in service and family studies. They already took away the things she loved like her horse riding that they used to blackmail her because she talked to the worldly people there. They already pulled her out of school to keep her at home exclusively in the company of JWs. But hey, maybe she got the new iPhone.
Obviously she needs a plan. She's not just running out and living on the streets though. She has options and is exploring them, though some here would have her just stick it out for material things with blackmail attached.
It's bad enough to be abused at home. I don't know why she would come here to take it from some of you that seem to be so worried about material things above a person's emotional and mental well being. If she doesn't go to college now all is not lost. Many go later in life. Maybe she can move in with her aunt and it gets delayed a bit but she finds a way to go soon. College does not equal a happy life or productive career. Neither does a car or cell phone.
Just FYI, I actually have been in contact with BlackWolf and my wife and I did offer her a way out if needed. I'm sure you think we're suckers for doing that because she must not have it that bad. You must be a hoot in therapy sessions. Suicidal? Buck up you wanker, stop whining like a baby. Geezus.

HQ must be paying Google to get the top hits
by nonjwspouse ini typed into google jehovahs-witness and the first four hits were borg sites.
this site was not even on the first page .

Ultimately you can't pay Google to get the top hits anyway, unless we're talking ads that were purchased. It's a matter of them being the official site and search engine optimization. It makes sense for them to rank highest. Google has algorithms that control search results, including some personalization.

I guess we should have all just stayed in the cult for our families, right? After all, going through the motions is nothing, right? Control your emotions and just grin and bear it. If the advice offered in this thread was followed we'd all still be in the cult and there'd be no reason for this forum. We'd all live lives of quiet desperation, never taking steps to find our happiness. Circumstances absolutely affect one's happiness, it's not true that we can all control our thoughts and feelings and just bury who we are. True, we can for a time, but she's done it for years already as a child and everyone has a breaking point.
Take care of yourself blackwolf. You can't find emotional health in toxic life circumstances. You can start, but that makes it harder to stay.

You know my advice will be to move. The cult bought your parents with promises of better things and look how it turned out. Like jp said above, one of the worst things we can do is to not be true to ourself. If your parent's support depends on blackmailing you to go do dub stuff, then your parents are showing how little they really care, unfortunately.
To thine own self be true. Your depression says it all. Get out and go be happy. You want to see how much your parents love you? Do what YOU want and you'll see that your parents are all about themselves, not you. It hurts. It sucks. But far too often in the cult it's true. If you lose them you will have to accept that fate as it's up to them. You have to be you and let them be them.
I totally disagree with posts telling you to suck it up because your parents give you material things while ignoring who you are and how you feel. Saying that you have it good at home because you have material things while you cry every day is mind blowing. Your soul is being crushed but hey, you've got an iPhone. Yuck. Life is about more than things.

A man with an experience is not at the mercy of a man with an opinion. Piss off rulehayl. You speak of that which you do not know. Happy culting. You get what you deserve.

Beware. Merely having AN answer for nearly everything in one tidy package doesn't mean it is THE answer. Additionally, answers like "we need to wait on Jehovah" or that are written in publications with weasel words like "evidently" or "likely" are not answers at all.
Humans have a desire for certainty and structure. It makes us feel comfortable. Unfortunately controlling people or groups that display narcissistic traits often provide those things and suck in innocent victims. An abuser never shows their hand at first, they lure you in with charm and slowly disrobe you of your armor until you're naked with no place to go and you then need them.
Please research cult methodology such as the FOG (fear obligation guilt) and the BITE (behavior information thought emotional control) models. You're not just talking to people here that aren't knowledgeable, we've been where you are. Many of us were elders, ministerial servants, pioneers, parents that taught this to their children, etc. We've been around this block. You'd be a fool to discount what people here have to say. I hope you're not too far in to listen.
Speaking of listening, I invite you to listen to my 9 part podcadt series called "This JW Life" on iTunes or Google Play or just go to thisjwlife.com and stream them directly. You will see what you're not being told or shown now. If you're going to commit to this religion you should know what others that were in it have gone through. You wouldn't date a person and ignore their past and then marry them. You're being given chances here to listen to the realities of experiences with this organization. Ignore at your own peril.
