Question for people who sew/craft

ok, it has been a long time since i sewed anything.

do i wash my fabric first?

i can't remember and the pattern instructions don't say.. diana

I am going to attempt making a cloak for my daughter from some fabric I have had in storage for years (keep your fingers crossed) with the same pattern my mother used for mine. I am going to give it to her as a fall solstice present.

Cloak sound great. I agree you should not need to wash the fabric for that.

You making a cloak reminds me of the movie Step Mom when the mother makes a Magicians cloak for her son, and a quilt for her daughter, with photos quilted into it. I love that movie always planned on making quilts like that for my kids.

Had Lunch with Prisca.

i'm feeling really good today.. i had lunch with prisca yesterday, it was really great.

we talked about the reasons we both left the borg, it was really great to talk to someone face to face about everything.

the best thing is she only lives 10 minutes away from me, how great is that.. she moved to melbourne about 12 months ago.

I bought my first antique Singer treadle-machine when I was 14, and learned to sew with that, much to the Chagrin of my parents.......Then I bought a regular Electric a few years later. Now I still have an old treadle machine, and a Singer feather weight.

Ok I'm Jealous, would love one of those antique machines. Would look great in my house too, Old cottagy weatherboard place.

I have done a little machine quilting, but would love to someday make a quilt completely from scratch, all hand-stitched.

Would love to make a quilt too, will machine stitch it though, dont have the patience for hand stitching. Never had the time though. Now I no longer waste my time at meetings etc. will have the time now. Will definately have to get my sewing room organised again.

Would love to see some of your quilts.

Any body else done any quilting, would love to see them.

I always wash fabric according to the washing directions fof that type of fabric. If you can I always dry it in the drier too. I use my drier a lot. I like to be safe, i figue if i'm going to go to all that effort to make something then I don't want it to shrink the first time I wash it.

I mostly do sewing for my kids so all the material for them needs to be pre shrunk first. I always buy a bit more than the pattern recomends to allow for shrinkage, it's amazing how much some fabrics shrink.

things I do not like about xmas

aside from the reasons jws give as it being a pagan holiday renamed..... i do not like the fact that parents think nothing of lying to their children about this mythical santa claus.

and the constant hollywood movies making anyone who exposes the gag as an evil monster...while giving children reasons to believe that santa claus really does exist after all...ignore your older friends who have been poisoned by the secular world.. i find it appalling to ever teach a child to simply expect people to give them things just because the calendar says a certain day.. i find the mindless devoution to christmas to be just as appalling as the brainwashing jws do against it... i see people in my office acting like german clocks... the clock strikes easter and the decorate the office, strikes holloween and they decorate again...strikes christmas and more decorations..... then the frets and worries over what to get who and how much to go into debt over it.. i knew one lady who spent over $300 on a child less than two and was very depressed about two weeks later when the novelty wore off and only very inexpensive things returned as the main attraction.

Never celebrated christmas, raised in the Borg and only been out a few months.

The idea of it has always fascinated me, but I never felt like I missed out on something. My parents anniversary was just after christmas so they always made a big deal of that, pressies for the whole family and all that.

I do believe that is is tooo comercialised and people spent way too much money on the whole thing. Whenever I told someone at the shops that I did not celebrate it due to religious beliefs they said what a great idea.

As far as getting the family together for christmas I think it's great but why do many families only do it at christmas time, shouldn't they get together as often as they can.

Having said all that I have no idea what I'll do for christmas this year, I'm hoping to spend it with my mum, she is no longer a JW and her new husband and his family get together for a BBQ and swap pressies, pretty low key. Would love to do that, take my kids too, see how they like it.

please dont take offence but ive just realised something maybe its been touched on before,.but when i was reading the thread on bil cosby i read the one off obviously secret.

now as i am a white person i assumed he was white until he stated he was black.

so when i thought about it, i imagine everyone on this site is white, does everyone who is black imagine everyone else is black, and anyone oriental imagine everyone else is oriental.

I'm an Aussie of english and german decent.

So in the winter I'm white, in the summer a nice warm brown colour.

She moved to melbourne about 12 months ago. She moved here to sever all contacts with the Borg, still felt like she was being watched all the time.

Were going to the ex-jdub reunion next week too, i'm really looking forward to that.

I'm so excited, not feeling so lonely any more. Feel like things are moving forward for me.
