  i've read everything by all my favourite writers and am looking for some new ones.

  Elmer, that's not HELPFUL, it was a SERIOUS question (you know I'm kidding, right?).

  Valis, I haven't read it. I read Enders Game but it was too sad for me. Is The Tales of Alvin Maker just as sad?

  Terri, I loved l'Engle when I was a kid, I read and reread them all. My list of faves is pretty long, I'll just give some. Ursula Leguin, William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Octavia Butler, Joan Slonczewski, Maureen McHugh, Alison Sinclair, Tim Powers, Vonda McIntyre, Marian Zimmer Bradley (Darkover series), Geoff Ryman, Starhawk, Walter Tevis, the Strugatsky brothers, Connie Willis, Kate Wilhelm. (Some of those are more fantasy than science fiction, I can't always get writers into just one category). I loved Heinlein and Asimov and Laumer when I was young, but they all seem a bit dated now. How about your list?

  MEN ONLY- Freezing up at the Urinal!

  women are invited to read this but they most certainly won't be able to relate.

  i know there have to be a lot of men out there who can't pee while in a crowded public restroom (bathroom).

  personally, the more people who surround me while i'm standing at the urinal, the more difficult it is for me to pee.

  Hah, reminds of a joke. Two guys are standing on a bridge and they have been drinking lots of beer so they both whip it out and hang it over the side for a piss. After a minute's companionable silence one says "boy, that water's cold." The other one answers "yeah, deep too."

  Maybe I hoard things too much?

  i've just been sorting out various paperwork and going through the filing cabinet.

  as well as every pay advice i've ever had (20+ years worth back to '83) i also have every bank statement, every cheque stub and, erm ... a big wad of atm receipts going back at least 10 years !

  i just can't stand to throw things away for fear that i may need them one day!!.

  I do it, always have done. Once it turned out that the telephone company had been overcharging everybody for months, since some new regulations had come into effect. I was able to produce my bills for the last year and get a couple hundred dollars back. So now I never feel wierd about it anymore.

  well..............i have had my hair many colors........as my friends can attest.. today i went black...dark.. so.. what do you all think of the phases of juls.. which color works best on her???

  here i am from black.. to blonde and brunettte to auburn.. .

  I like the black best, it makes you look very French and chic and exotic. Whenever I colour my hair it just wrecks my skin tone, makes me look like I have a lingering illness. But I haven't tried black yet and your success makes me think I should give it a shot.

  1. What is the margin of error?

  It doesn't matter what the margin of error is. The point is that saying it's anti-American to oppose the president or his policies is absurd. If half the people elect a president, and the other half don't, and he wins by a tiny margin, that would mean that half the country is anti-American. If the margin of support shifts by a tiny margin, now the other half of the country is anti-American. That doesn't make sense. If being against the incumbent president were really anti-American, then no one could EVER vote against an incumbent. If Bush is kicked out and Kerry gets in, would all the Bush supporters then be anti-American? That point of view is completely at odds with democracy. The defining feature of democracy is the right to criticise and reject the policies and leadership of our leaders. They don't represent us by divine mandate but through democratic processes. Calling those who oppose and criticise our leaders and their policies anti-American is the same as calling democracy itself anti-American.

  Well, of course women can relate to the problem, I hate to pee in public, but I don't usually have to worry about it unless I go on the countryside or one of those countries where the public bathrooms are kind of exposed. I've been in cafes in France where the toilet is a hole in the ground with a footprint either side, and the door doesn't lock. Try leaning on a door while squatting with your jeans around your ankles, while simultaneously trying not to get your bottie anywhere near the hole and not to pee on yourself.

  If 99% of Americans wanted something they didn't then they would still declare themselves the only true patriots and everyone else "anti"

  True, but then they would be considered the lunatic fringe again. How I long for that day to return.

  I think this was very dry sarcasm. The way I understood it is as follows: Many people have called it anti-American to be against the war because the majority of Americans were for it. Now that the majority (51%) of Americans are against it, by the same reasoning it must now be anti-American to be for the war. Perhaps I was being too subtle in my analysis, in which case hopefully Irongland will set me straight.
