German speakers will be wondering what I was on about with "it". Actually, I was wrong. I had a beer and a half last night and got confused, which I often do when it comes to German. "It" is just "it", but everything I said about "it" applies to "this" and "that".

I just have to say (and I speak as someone struggling - rather unsuccessfully - with learning German for a year and a half now) that English is a doddle, homonyms and all, compared with German. It has 4 cases, gendered articles, separable verbs (which means the first little part of the word has to be broken off and wait till the end of the sentence, by which time you've completely forgotten it). Under certain circumstances the verb also comes at the end of the sentence, but not always, so you have to memorise exactly when. If there are two verbs, then the second verb usually comes at the end of the sentence, but sometimes the first verb comes after the second verb, again you have to memorise exactly when. Verbs involving a change of state (running, walking, arriving) take a different auxialiary than all the others in the past tense. But who stops to think about whether the action they are describing is actually a change of condition? I mean, that's pretty metaphysical, you know? Jeesh. Every time you say the word "it" you have to think about the gender of the noun you are referring to, because there are three different "its", plus you have to think about whether you are doing something to "it" or taking something from "it" etc, because there are four different ways to act on "it" and each has its own word. That's twelve different possibilities to choose from every bloody time you say "it". Gosh, I miss English.

What other scams do people fall for?
by sleepy inwhat other scams apart from religion do people fall for?
i think a lot of so called alternative medicines could be put under the label of scam including homeopathy, crystal healing, aromatherapy and quite a few others.
spirit mediums, and astrologers are reprehensible also for taking people for a ride.

Nosferatu, I take your point, a lot of alternative medicine is ridiculously expensive and exploitive. I was just making a different point. If it doesn't work, it's not worth shit whether it's mainstream or alternative. If it does work, it doesn't matter whether it's poppyseed extract or molecularly recombined stemcell extract engineered in a space station by geniuses from Harvard (I just made that up, I don't know if it really exists - in fact it's probably scientifically impossible). And the placebo effect often works. If people believe that they can cure piles by stuffing peat moss up their ass, then maybe that will work for them better than hemorroid cream. Something from the tone of your post tells me that wouldn't work for you, but I may be wrong. None of that stuff works for me but neither do mainstream medicines because I don't believe in them either. I guess if I ever really get sick, I'm screwed.

Natural remedies are probably just a placebo effect, BUT they have done research showing that the placebo effect is really powerful. So why not? Who cares, if it gets you well? You don't think the pharmaceutical companies aren't making billions off medicines that don't have a very high cure rate?

It is beautiful, very moving. I don't think this can ever happen for JWs because I believe that they really are a book publishing corporation, at the top. But if they did do this, I would change my mind about that. Obviously.

Vaccination has never saved a human life. It does not prevent smallpox.
by Pole ini recently found some quotes from wt literature concerning vaccination (mostly golden age).
sorry if it sounds like reinventing the wheel to you.... .
anyway, it's interesting to know them, because this crap can't be reasoned away ewith the new light doctrine.

You know, I grew up in the sixties as a JW and I was vaccinated and I don't remember a single word against it from the platform, or that my mother had any conflicts. When did it change?
There is some dreadful stuff that goes into vaccines, I don't know about monkey brains, but they used to put mercury in, apparently, and still put in formaldehyde. I worried and worried about vaccinating my daughter because I heard such stories. I did it anyway though.

Oh, it's really sad. I'm trying to figure out what lesson we can learn from this about keeping our own daughters safer. I guess, if you think the bus driver is wierd, forget about getting where you're going and always get off the bus with the last person left besides you? But then what if it's a rotten neighborhood? Or the countryside?

It's really terrible, but I realised years ago that by excluding everyone who doesn't believe like them, they're really only excluding themselves. When I was on the inside and then left, I felt like the outsider for a long time. But then I realised they are the outsiders. It's just a change of perspective, but sometimes that helps.
