I am having a real problem with this because I have sworn like a truck driver since I was 12 years old and now my daughter is picking it up and I feel terrible about it. It sounds so utterly wrong coming from a three-year-old. I always modified my swearing around people I thought it would offend, but I think 3 year olds grasp that concept inversely. As in, oh, this offends people, how fun, let's try THAT again. Now I have to figure out how to handle it without being a hypocrite. And I have to stop swearing around her, that's clear. Gosh, your bad habits really come back to bite you in the ass rear end when you have kids (see, I'm trying).

Good manners and curse words
by Maverick inone of the comments i have heard many times is what good manners i display.
i open doors, allow others to cut in line ahead of me, say please, thank you and may i all the time, stand for a lady and many other simple little and often goofy actions that seem to have been lost on the current generation.
in fact the thing that attracted my present girlfriend was her observation of my good manners.

Long read, but quite an interesting article from New Yorker on terrorism
by RandomTask inthat day, the interior minister, angel acebes, insisted publicly that eta was the prime suspect?even though the police were now certain that eta was not directly involved.
to kill americans and their allies.
another internet document soon appeared, titled ?message to the spanish people,?

Well, I read the whole article. It gave a lot of detail about Al-Qada networks and activities, but I think it leaves the underlying reasons hidden. Maybe he doesn't understand them himself, or maybe he has a political agenda that blinds him. And the fact that he said that the Spanish were appeasing the terrorists, and that it was foolish, shows that he DOES have a political agenda. The Spanish people were always against supporting the war in Iraq, and it also sounds as if they responded badly to being lied to by their government. Which is understandable. He gives good information about the structure of Al-Qada, but he doesn't genuinely explore the geo-political socio-ecomic reasons for their existence and their support in the Muslim community. He paints Muslims as doolally religious nuts and rather glosses over the fact that Spain did in fact kick the Muslims out of their own country - like, it was 500 years ago, get over it. Okay, it was 500 years ago, but the Jews still remember their Diaspora, how long ago was that? Americans might not empathise with that, because we're such a new country, but many groups of people hang onto their history (and their resentments) for hundreds of years. Anyway, the article made clear to me how really crazy and dangerous Osama is, but it left me wondering why he has so much support in the Islamic community. I simply don't believe that it's because they are just a bunch of lunatic savages who want to kill all infidels. There's more to it than that, and we are going to get nowhere with this problem (and this article made me realise for the first time just how enormous and complicated the problem is) if we can't move beyond that to a more intelligent and objective analysis. But it was very interesting, thank you for posting it.
By the way, wasn't it the Mujahadin that Russia went to Afghanistan to fight? Very scary to see them popping up again.

Hi Ian
I don't know you but I wanted to tell you that I'll be praying for you too. If you didn't already read Larrey Dossy's book on the healing power of prayer, you might enjoy it. Since reading it I firmly believe in praying.

JWism..........I'm not worthy!
by bikerchic inso i'm reading this book you can't afford the luxury of a negative thought, by peter mcwilliams and this chapter jumped out at me, i'll quote it below because to me it totally answers the jw dogma and how ingrained that feeling of never being good enough, or just plain enough.
i would be interested in some feed back if you have any.. where does negative thinking come from?.
part i page 49.. why do we use the power of our mind to create a negative reality?

Do we really feel worthy or unworthy? That's a thought, not a feeling, right? I think what we feel is shame or disappointment or anger or grief, and then we think "if I feel these negative things I must be unworthy". Maybe it's a habit ingrained in us to think "I am unworthy", so it's hard to kick, but we don't have to think it. We could just think "now I feel shame" or whatever it is. And the opposite of thinking you are unworthy doesn't have to be thinking you are worthy. That kind of sets up a cycle where you'll always have to be feeling one or the other, fighting against the one and struggling for the other. You can't tie worthiness to getting the best or even getting anything. Because we will always make mistakes, and we can't always get what we want. Nobody gets everything, and some hardly get anything. If we see everything in terms of unworthy and worthy then we'll always be setting ourselves up, judging ourselves for the inevitable disappointments and losses. And we'll be thinking it about others too, that this other person has lots of money and a great job, he must be worthier than I am, while that person lives in the gutter, he's way less worthy than I am. The rich person may secretly run a Colombian cocaine farm and the gutter person may have been a WWI hero, for all we know. I think all that we can reasonably say to ourselves is "I try my best, sometimes it isn't good enough, usually it is."
I'm glad you posted this topic, it really made me think.

When you were in school, did you dread knocking on a schoolmate?s door?
by Elsewhere ini did not know where most of my schoolmates lived, but i knew they were out there... somewhere.
i dreaded the thought of a door opening to a face i knew from school.
it was like walking through a minefield for me... every door was like another step... would my next step be my last???

I dreaded it more than anything, but I don't remember it ever happening. Maybe there is a God, and he decided to answer just that particular prayer.

I have a kid inside me that really just wants to find a magic coin or a tesseract or to meet Mrs. Piggly Wiggly, and I think that's probably where my sense of spirituality comes from. I need to feel that everything isn't just dominated by logic and rationality and statistical correlations, that the universe is unpredictable after all and something astonishing is around the next corner. I love it when meaningful coincidences happen, like I go to call my sister and the phone is busy cuz she's calling me (and we only call each other once a month or so, so it's not THAT statistically likely). One time I was driving with my husband and said "I really want to live someplace that has magic for me" (speaking metaphorically of course) and in that instant a car pulled in front of us with a licence plate that said "magic" on it. (I admit I tried to work out the chances, how many cars in that country, how many miles of road, how many seconds in the day. I got mindboggled by which factors to include, and gave up.) That's not exactly deep compared to some of the things people have written on this thread, but it keeps my life joyful.

Do you believe in "same sex" marriage?
by Carmel inyesterday i tuned into espn sports radio and listened to a semi-political debate on several issues.
when "same sex" marriage came up one of the talking heads refrained that "all marriages are same sex.
" you get married and have the "same sex" over and over again!

the end, when one died, the other had to part with her home and all of the belongings because they technically belongs to her partner
But couldn't they make wills leaving it all to each other?
I have a pair of gay friends who have been together for a few years and insurance etc is the least of their problems. Since one is American and the other is German, they are completely screwed when it comes to immigration. Now they're here and they are miserable because they want to go back, but the German can't get permission to stay in the states. If they were mixed they could just get married and it would all be solved, but for them it can NEVER be solved. I find it sad, because they are clearly a real married couple. The American has no desire to be here and actually no opportunities here either, he is just here because it's the only way to stay with his partner.
As far as having the same sex over and over (I didn't miss the beginning of the thread) there's a simple solution. Just have sex once a year, then it will always seem new.

Strict Discipline
by ballistic inone day, while a jehovah's witness mother cleans her sons room, she finds a sado-masochist magazine on top of the wardrobe.
unsure of how to confront him, she keeps the magazine and shows it to her husband when he comes in from doing his shepharding calls.
slowly, he flicks through the pictures of leather clad dominatrix and whips, before handing it back to his wife without a word.
