So, how IS life now, Angus beef? Have you faded successfully and can still be a grandparent? I hope so. How is hubby doing? Any other family members on way out?

New here and having ah ha moments!

i've been having health problems for the last few years and instead of any help, i'm listed as spiritually weak and of course associations is only my kids and husband.
all the good jw's have moved to other congregations and are doing well.

Bicyclists
by poppers ini'm wondering what sort of biking shoes and pedals you are using.
i'm a road biker, so i enjoy speed and distance riding, and am upgrading my shoes and pedals.
anyone have experience with specialized road shoes with the boa stem?

I think I would kill myself quickly if I actually strapped my feet to the pedals (ok, I concede it's not quite that literal) but, I am with Terry here, I ride because it's better than driving (sometimes...I live where it rains all winter) and for the sheer enjoyment of finding a good bike trail in my city.

Your favourite dog breed ...?
by LoveUniHateExams inin an earlier thread, i mentioned that i wasn't a particularly doggy person but that my parents got a husky last year that i've come to regard as a kind of brother.. huskies superficially resemble wolves and for me it's been fun to compare and contrast husky and wolf behaviour.
huskies howl but rarely bark, and seem to have a strong prey drive and a strong pack instinct - a nod to their wild cousins.
this is why i love huskies, i think.. do you have a favourite dog breed and why?.

I have a soft spot and some experience with odd mutts. our first family dog came to us on the way to the shelter. Even though she introduced herself by peeing on my floor (think she knew her situation was dire) my kids cries of glee when my father stopped by with Sasha were too much to ignor. Sasha was one half Dachshund, one half golden Lab...mom (a purebred show Dachshund) got outside and must have stood on a lawnchair but there you have it! We had Sasha for 13 years. I waited another 12 years and now have another interesting mutt and great dog. His name is Judge and he is part Red Heeler and part Shar Pei. He's proving to be a most loyal friend and protector. He does have the issues that go with Shar Pei's...skin allergies and such. But we are dealing with those. I call him my fair skinned freckled red head.

So they are reading the Old Testament conquest of Canaan Bible readings in November and December. Very good, very good....should wake up a few more folks after the terrible zone talk of Tony Morris and the passing of 100 years of nothing. Yes, it could be a good thing they are reading this particular segment of the Bible right now and add to that the similarities to ISIL and Boko haram (sp) it was stuff like this that helped to wake me up.

by Hortensia indecided to spend the day wasting time.
drove down to redding.
on the way i saw the real woody woodpecker -- every time i see one of those red-headed woodpeckers i think of the cartoon character.

I would love to meet up with you Hortensia some day! My son and his lovely gal just had their first baby, a beautiful little girl, and although they live in Hawaii right now there is talk of maybe coming back to the mainland. If they do I suspect Northern Cali is where they might land. Of course, they might just stay on the big island and who could blame them ☺️
But, it sure would be closer to visit them if they were in N. California!

Finally sent that letter, but not to mom...
by Odrade inno not that letter.. so we hobbled along with the family relationship.
my parents (super-devout, highly involved and connected in jw-land,) spoke with me occasionally with that sad mopey voice.
at one point about 6 years ago, my mom quit speaking to me.

Odrade, your letter to your dad was very intelligent and direct. It was good. Back in January of 2011 I had what I have decided was my fatal conversation with my dad. He had been communicating with me again over about a 5 year period (while separated from his wife, my stepmother) and although I tried to never bring up the religion he was always one to 'get into it' with me. So, I called him that January day to ask if he might talk to my daughter and maybe help her to see that she didn't have to totally cut me off. My daughter had given birth the year before to my first grandchild and I wanted at least to see him a little... My father refused to get involved but then asked me why I 'hated' the organization so much.
Boy, where to begin?
The whole shunning aspect for one but I also took him on a little journey back in time to the Rutherford era and brought it up to the present with pedophile issue, hypocracy of UN membership and the real estate investment and 'include Watchtower in your will' money grab stuff....and more.
I was pretty thorough.
We agreed to disagree in the end but a month later he was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. Even so, he asked for me to come out to see him. In the meantime he got back with my stepmother and within a week and under her pressure and shoving JW material on evil apostates under his nose by the time I made the trip down to see him I was no longer welcome on his doorstep. I had flown down on a one way ticket because I didn't know how long he would last and I stayed for 6 weeks never getting to see or speak to him once.
I must say, a part of me regrets being so honest and direct with him. I didn't know he would be dead within the year. Everybodies situation is different and with JW's there are no easy ways to deal with them. I now live with a degree of guilt that I pulled his rug out from under him at such a vulnerable time but I also felt a lot of anger towards him for leaving without saying goodby...no closure on that one.
i hope you feel a lot more peace than I have and you should. Your approach was totally appropriate to your family situation.

Your favourite WTS publication?
by LoveUniHateExams ini realise that starting this thread may make me as popular as a ginger stepchild but was there any wts publication that you liked, or at least comfortably tolerated?.
my memory may be deceiving me but i think the greatest man book was pretty good, leaving out the gruesome detail of the crucifixtion and wts doctrine.. also, can anyone tell me the list of books that ray franz authored/co-authored?.

At first when I read the title of this thread I felt kind of like ADCMS...or what was my favorite flu bug. But after reading the comments I have to say Commentary on Letter of James tops my list. I think it just may have played a part in my waking up due in part by the reaction of a pioneer sister when I mentioned I was reading it. She basically said it wasn't a good idea...no explanation why. I had no idea at the time who wrote it.
I also liked The Greatest Man book because it focussed on Jesus. Jehovah was not a pleasant god to read about...ever....and at least Jesus had some more positive attributes.
Although I can't say I liked all the songs in the various songbooks that I remember I did like some of them and they were fun to play. There was one song in the old, old green songbook (circa 1950's/60's) that had a song I really liked and was surprised when I found it in my violin lesson book. I actually got into an argument with a girl in my violin class who claimed it was also in her church songbook. My little JW mind just didn't think that possible that bad old christendom had one of 'our' songs and my favorite to boot! It was not in the purple SB that came next😒

I have pics of Mt Shasta from the highway and even from that vantage point she is beautiful! Haven't seen the view of Lassen and Shasta together but do occasionally get to see 4 of the ring of fire volcanoes all together on a clear day from Bald Peak in Oregon! (Those would be Jefferson, Hood, Adams and St. Helens. )
