What's Up with Prince??
by Flash inby jake coyle, associated press writer
new york - prince, now a jehovah's witness, has toned down his mojo, but the purple one can still pack a political punch.
his new music video, "cinnamon girl," is a big-budget production that follows the hardships and confusions of a teenage arab-american girl in a post 9-11 america.

Those silly Kingdom Melodies
by RR inever get one of those jungles in your head and you can't get rid of it.
i was trying to put my son to sleep, there he is leaning on me and i'm humming, and realized it was a kingdom melody.
15 years and they're still in my head!

Interestingly, A freind (still quite the dub) sent me a email attachment where PRINCE preforms one of the kindom Melodies. Actually, I always liked the tunes, and still listen to them now and again. I still have it if anyone is interested in hearing it.

Why can't JW's eat from street vendors?
by TresHappy inmy parents said they received a directive from the society not to buy from the street vendors at the district convention.
is that just a unique situation?
i don't think this has to do with religion, but revenue...

I dont know why, but at least in springfield,IL, they are not.
My brother-in-law who went to the Convention in Springfield, IL, over the fourth of July weekend, came back and said that there was an announcement at the end. The "brother" mentioned that the street vendor told someone that they did not sell even one hot dog to us.
I think that is wrong! They should have told these street vendors and hotels that the dubs would not be partaking, because you know they ordered a BUNCH of food and had way too much. That oughta piss someone off...
On another subject of my own..I just got the book, Crisis of Conscience, from the library, It is the original version, am I going to miss anything by not reading the updated version??? Thanks...

Just wondering, jwsons, what connection is there with ALDI and the WTS?
Thank you Blues for the scan of the article. Maybe I am still brainwashed, but I see this as a two part answer to a two part question. I really dont see any permission for the average JW to celebrate birthdays. The question asked if it ok to allow your conceince to decide if one can celebrate holidays/birthdays, since it was ok to do so with the candy stuffed animal. The answer was clear. Birthdays are still wrong. but on small, insognificant things, then you can decide on your own. Thats how I see it.

How did you get out of field service?
by Mulan inwhen i was a kid, we had the meeting for service at our house on saturdays.
i would seem to be getting ready in my room and when mom went into the living room, i would run into her bathroom and get in the shower.
i had long hair, and no hairdryers in those days.

In our family, it really was not an option to get out of field service. We had to go every weekend, even holidays! I remeber hating it too. Thats why I like reading these threads, because I know EXACTLY what you all are talking about.
My brother and I came up with a plan one time. We would go to the door, and act like we was knocking or pushing the door bell, but would not. That was fun, until we got caught! Mom was so mad at us. I forget what punishment we got, but it was embarrasing.
I am unaware of ANYONE I EVER went out in service with that was happy to do so, and actually cared about the "householder". Even pioneers with their "got to get my time in" attitude.
Remember when you would sit in the field serivce meeting and someone would say that they have a study at such and such time? Then the conductor would ask who wants to go with them on the study? Man I hated it when I had to go on a study! How boring was that? Then they would make us read scriptures or paragraphs. And every time it seems like the householder would have toys in view of the study area, and all I could think about was playing with the toys.
But, without the field service there would certainly be no "break time". That was the best. The group always seemed to meet at the donut shop at around 10:30 am. And there would always be a donut in it for us. We would lounge around the donut shop with friends for up to an hour! But then, as always, it seems the traveling overseers came around and would "encourage" us to either take no breaks, or VERY short ones. Oh well, alls well that ends well!

Were you ever "rewarded" for your faithful service?
by Jonty Parkin in"rewards" for faithful service sometimes used to come in the most unlikely manner.
to illustrate; the "privillege" of being a young microphone handler occasionally yielded its wholesome dividends of an unexpected nature.
for example, when i was once on microphone duty as a young aspirant ministerial slave, i was rewarded with an edifying flash of theocratic tit when a sister leant forward to give her comment.

I feel like the reward was being able to carry the mic, because meeting went a whole lot faster when you was actually paying attention on who to hand the mic to next.
Its just too bad that due to being on restrictions "all the time" I hardly was given this "reward".
BTW, thank you for being honest about the whole tit thing. I have been a big fan of the bend-over effect for a long time. (Bend-over effect is what I call when you can see into the gap of a shirt/blouse/dress/etc. when a woman leans over.)

Has this happened to anyone else?
by EyeDrEvil inok, this may sound silly and trivial.
but, i need to know if anyone else has had a similar experience.. as a result of facial hair (a goatee and mustache), i was relieved of my incredibly important.
later, i felt like i should send the elders a thank you note for their wake up call to the fact that i was in a very messed up religion.

It is true. Different congregations say different things about the ole' goatee. In my original congregation, it was a direct NO-NO. Then when we moved to another congregation in a different state, there was a "brother" with at goatee who gave talks and offered "prayer".
The one who was stumbled???..............ME!!!
He should have shaved for ME. I am the old lady in the illstration mentioned. Of course, we asked the elder we was close to, and he dint really have any answers.
But, even now, now that meetings are in the past, I am engrained that "good" people do not have goatee's. Anyone with a goatee is bad. That is how I still see it. I guess born and raised being taught that way...just sticks. So I let mine grow on weekends and holidays, but shave clean for workdays....
Its too bad really, cause I like the look of a goatee on me........oh well...

Most hated WT publication
by Nosferatu inwhat is the wt publication you hated the most?

The Worship book wins for me. I can recall our family study, usually the night of the book study, and the assignment would be a few paragraphs, and one of those bold scripture point-proving parts. There was soo many scriptures, it would take forever to look up and read them all, as a family. (TV was already banned on tuesday/thursday anyway). That book was just painfully boring. Then, to really make it stink, we had bookstudy at our house, and sometimes just one or two elderly sisters would show up, and we would have to sit through all that crap again. Man, I hated that.
