REMINDER: During these 40 days of Lent we will be joining the other community churches in presenting the Lenten Luncheon series on Wednesdays. Local ministers will be taking turns giving appropriate sermons while lunch is served at Noon. Our Kingdom Hall will be the host this week.

Is Valentine's Day Overrated?
by Swan inmy husband says it isn't a real holiday.
he says when he was young it was about trading valentines (cards); not about gifts.
halloween is a major holiday, but not a day off.

You know, to me the fact that you bought him a card says something. I'd say go ahead and still give it to him...and I can't help but feel the vibes that say you kind of wish you had received something a little special from him. It is like anything, if we want to receive, we sometimes have to give...it is a life lesson of sorts, showing others that certain things make us feel good, happy, etc...and they in return can feel the same.
I definitely feel all holidays are commercially overrated but that does not keep me from participating in the "moment" of the holiday. And Easter and Christmas come first due to their Christian significance to me. But I love all holidays!
I do NOT agree that JW's are right on renouncing holidays; I think they have done more damage to people than the commercialism has done.
Hope this makes sense, I don't post much!

i just thought it was a site where witnesses discussed subjects, and did not expect such a negative response to my naivety.

Hi Yvonne! Don't apologize, I doubt that you offended anyone here. Some posts can seem offensive, but these are people who speak their own minds. Many of these people were raised as JW's and many of them still are, some still are not, and some of us never were. We come from varying backgrounds but the JW teachings are why we are here. Some of us have family members who follow those teachings and we are here (like me) to try and understand, from others who have been indoctrinated.
I encourage you to stay around, don't get your feelings hurt. There can be lots to learn here.

Stumbled Across the Forum
by UncleI ini stumbled across this forum today as i was looking for information online as it relates to johnny carson and the whole john denver thing that was spread around years ago.
it's no surprise that i cant find a single thing on it on the web as i always thought it was an urban legend.
just angers me that things like that spread around and so many people just accept it as truth because a brother or sister told it to them.

Congrats on arriving at THE place! You will learn a lot and feel good about it, I'm sure. As far as your wife, you stated that she "seldom" attends, and that her family in Inactive. Given that, once you are educated here, and read Crisis of Conscience (have you heard of it?), you will be able to help her see the way out. There are many Christian congregations to visit and find out what the real "truth" is. Just take your time, read read read.

Did I challenge my JW husband too much?
by wordlywife inin case all of you don't know, i'm married to a wonderful jw man, for a few years now.
he was reinstated ater we were married.
anyway, i have children from a previous marriage and at times disagree with my husband on discipline, how things are explained, etc.

Poor WW, you definitely have a Tough Road ahead! Too bad his true colors didn't show before you conceived a child with him because that is going to be your biggest challenge. He will definitely have his grips on how that one is raised.
As far as your own children from previous marriage, you are the parent. Esp if he is new to the family, he does not have the right to discipline them as he sees fit. You are going to have some pretty messed up kids if you allow him full authority. Stand on your feet for your rights and your kids' rights.
Lastly, you need to get some counseling. Go by yourself. Find a county supported place if you can't afford it. But please get there.
I'm sorry to be so blunt, but that's better than soft-coating this issue. You have to take charge.

Mario, God bless you and keep you safe through your recovery from this tragedy. Your daughter's light is shining, keep it bright in your heart always. She would want that, right? I don't know how, but I do know that strength can come from such life events, I have a good friend who lost 2 young sons, 3 years apart in accidents. Two other friends who lost their children. There were dark, dark days for these friends, but with help and time, they "came back". You will too. Therapy is a good thing; this board is another. Take care and know that prayers are going up for you by friends and strangers, like me.
