Min - I see what you're saying. Nobody would like it if someone in their group were talking bad about the group. But I think if a Baptist or Catholic were to go around saying that their religion is a cult the priest or preacher would just shake their head and roll their eyes at the poor confused fellow. There would be no reprimand or action taken. If a JW were to say at a KH that the JW's are a cult -- I assure you there would be a meeting in the little room in the back of the hall.

How To Know If You're in a Cult!
by metatron inyou don't need to read a book or consult a psychological expert.
it's all very simple.. ask yourself: if i refer to this group as a "cult", could i be excommunicated or disfellowshipped or expelled?.
have the leaders of this group instructed me not to refer to it as a "cult"?.

...not so much as eat with such a person...
by Tashawaa inmatthew 5:
anyone who is angry with his brother without having a good reason will be judged in court.
anyone who says wrong things to his brother will be judged for it in the big court.

My JW mom will NEVER get DF'ed for eating with me. Even when I was living at home at age 18 she would not eat with me. She would take her plate to the living room to avoid eating at the table with me. That is so christlike. I'm sure when she meets Jesus he will say "Good job Kriste! Excellent job of shunning your daughter!"
UUGGGGHHHHH!

Nice and simple. Who needs 8 criteria!!!
Another way to tell: You start to blush and panic when someone asks you what religion you are.

My stupidest elders meeting: I was about 14/15 and had gone to CA to spend the summer with a JW family that used to live in my area. While I was there I told my friend - an adult - that one of the elders was touching me inappropriately in my swimming pool. Nothing totally horrible - running his hand up and down my hip. Well, she didn't tell me but she called my home cong. and reported it. When I got home I got pulled into a meeting with my mom, the elders, the elder AND his wife and I was questioned about it.
Now people....what the F was that supposed to accomplish?!? Like I was going to talk about it in front of the man's sweet wife. And do you think my mom could have talked to me about it before the meeting??? Out of simple concern for her daughter?? It makes me sick to think about it now. I don't think they believed it even happened.
Interestingly - the same elder was having a "youth group" for the young people in our cong. and he kept getting in trouble because he wasn't supposed to have it. Hmmmmm I wonder why???

Is JW all doom and gloom?
by uninitiated ini am in a relationship with a man who is jw.
the things he tells me leads me to believe that their beliefs espouse doing nothing to better the world as it is hopeless, and all is coming to an end anyway.
this seems like a cowardly way to face the hardships in this world.

Welcome unintiated!! You are in for a
eareye-full!! First, to answer your question - YES it is all doom and gloom and it only gets worse. Since you apparently are not a JW - you will be happily destroyed by the JW god in armageddon while your boyfriend prances into the New System (tm).If he is not already putting the heat on you to become a JW, he soon will. Please, please, please inform yourself on what this cult is really all about. Read books and do an internet search. You will learn from many of us on this board how destructive they are. I was disfellowshipped at age 18 and haven't heard from my mom for many years because of their shunning doctrine.
You can test the waters by just mentioning to him that you visited an "apostate" discussion board. He will then in all likelihood begin to call us terrible names and say that we are lying, weak, lazy, unspiritual, etc. We have been hurt and abused by this destructive cult and know about all their lies. They don't want their book sellers (rank and file members) to find out the truth about the "truth" and leave.
I can't say it enough. Please please please....KEEP READING!!

Idea for when "Beware the Voice of Strangers" is studied
by joenobody inafter reading the "beware the voice of strangers" article, a thought occurred to me.
it has been suggested in the past that a number of board members ought to attend a particular meeting all on the same day.
why not on the sunday when this article is studied?

Double standards Re: Disfellowshipping

Good point Little Toe. I didn't mean to imply that in some circumstance we should judge. But, for anyone who has been cheated on before (myself included and RR too - it looks like anyway) it is hard not to have hard feelings about it and judge it as bad. Its a very painful thing.

RR - I'm shocked. You know that if a JW gets a divorce for any reason other than adultry, gets remarried - then that is considered adultry by the JW's. She could have divorced an abusive a--hole, re-married a wonderful soulmate and been DF'ed for adultry. She didn't say and considering what we know about the JW's methods - we should not judge!!!
And yes the Dbl standards are appalling. My dad was baptized and faded 2 years later. He was a drunk who cheated on my mom more than once. The elders talked about whether to DF him or not and decided not to. Who knows why not. I was 18 and having serious problems - and got DF'ed just like that. Pigs.
