Sweet. That's a great way to handle it. Funny - I don't think the Reasoning book has a chapter in it on 'How to handle all the bogus WT prophecies'....might start too many people thinking.....

What are you REALLY like?
by jwfacts init is strange chatting on the net, not knowing what everyone is really like.
do you pretend to be someone you are not?
i find it hard to know how to take people here sometimes, as words do not convey as much without seeing the facial expressions and hearing the tonal inflections.

Hmmm...interesting question. I'm very sarcastic, tend to be more logical than feeling, and have always had a problem with being honest. Working on that, especially with those close to me. I have two hobbies - music and old cars. I play guitar, mostly blues, rock, and metal and pretty much spend my spare time and money doing that. I play in two bands - one doing covers, one doing originals. I don't have the time, space or money to endulge in my classic car hobby any more, but hopefully will get to do it again someday. I'm a Cowboys fan, an Astros fan, and a Rockets fan. I hate Nascar. I love Tarentino movies and hate Woody Allen. I have a disturbed sense of humor.
There, that's me in a nutshell.

jwfacts,
Interesting statement. Many JW's are intelligent, but not deep thinkers. That is so true, and a concept that I've been unable to voice. I've known many very intelligent people during my time as a dub, and they can reason with people at the door very well, but they are so blind to the incongruencies in what they are spouting vs what the Bible really says. They truly can't be critical thinkers, because if they were, they wouldn't be dubs anymore. Most of the ones that are critical (not in the 'criticize' sense, but in the problem solving sense) thinkers are on this board...lol.

Bad Behavior in Field Service
by TallTexan inbeing raised in the 'truth', i obviously spent much of my youth in service.
of course, as we got older, my friends and i would act the fool in service as much as possible.
we used to use the names of popular rap artists with the old farts we called on.

We used to use the names of popular rap artists with the old farts we called on. This was back in the mid 80's, so I would be Kurtis Blow and my friends would be Mike D, or Billy Idol, or whomever we could think of. I had a friend take a leak on a door one time when the folks weren't at home. We would tip over flowerpots, trash mail, rearrange porch furniture, tell people we were Mormons, just about anything we could do to kill the time and the boredom. One time we took off the coats and ties and played a game of two on two with a couple of guys who were shooting hoops at their house. Try doing that in dress shoes. One time my best friend was standing right next to the car door giving a presentation to some dudes out in the driveway. I rolled down the window and rolled the tails of his coat up in the window. When he was about to read the scripture and said 'Here, let me show you this', he couldn't get loose to walk over to the guy.
Ah, good times sharing the good news......

I have a really good friend who has been completely 'wordly' for years now. Yet he was the first one to blast me for being on 'apostate' websites. I thought he, of all people, would be 'primed'. It's really weird how they can be totally out of the WT, living totally in the world, and still feel some type of loyalty. But, they're not a cult, right?????? >:-/

Overcoming objections/annoying the householder!
by Virgogirl inat the doors, did you try hard to keep them talking?
we thought the longer we could keep them listening, the better our chances of "striking a chord in their hearts!
sister virgogirl: " good morning, we were just visiting our neighbors this beautiful morning!

There was a time when I would try that, but then I realized that it didn't really matter. If they wanted to hear, they'd act interested. If they didn't, what was the point of annoying them. Actually, I was hoping they'd act disinterested, because I usually wasn't prepared to go any deeper than the 30-second mag presentation......

Tactics to sway my family from the JW organization
by findingmyway ini've been thinking lately about how i can get my family out of the organization.
my dad was once an elder (has been df'd once).
my mom was once a regular pioneer (hasn't in over 10 years and doesn't even work).

I have a large number of family and friends who are still being brainwashed. Fortunately, some of them are not and have 'seen the light'. I honestly never thought they would even remotely entertain the idea of the organization being wrong, but the issues I've brought up have helped. One of them told me today that it was the UN thing that showed them that the organzation was capable of deceit and dishonestly. I think that is a powerful point, because the (wt)BS has spent so much time condeming the UN.
Now, it hasn't worked on everyone. Many either don't believe or don't really care as they are content to be lied to and brainwashed. But, as my family member and I were talking about today, getting people to even begin doing the research they should on the organization is a lot like field service - you plant the seed, never knowing when that one thing will happen that will encourage them down the right path. Hang in there!

Dying for whats right???
by chuckyy inone of the things that i could not reconcile, which led to my disassociating myself was this:.
i have a daughter that needs open heart surgery.
my heart goes out to those parents who may have one time refused a blood fraction or even an organ transplant for their children because they believed at the time that it was scriptural.

Scully - very interesting point. In one of the cases that I'm familiar with of a court hearing to force blood on a child, that line of reasoning was actually used as a basis for the argument to get the court order. The idea was that if, in the eyes of the JW's, a child could not make a decision about being part of the religion until the 'age of understanding', then the child obviously was not able to make a decision that could possibly end it's life. Typical lack of logic in the Witness reasoning.

The picture on page 10 is obviously staged. We see two brothers one black and one white, greeting a middle-aged black sister.
Caption for picture one:
1) "Sister, while my daughter was visiting your granddaughter the other day, she 'accidentally' hacked into your PC and saw you were visiting www.jehovahs-witness.com. May we please have a word with you in the back?"
2) (Knowing it's the 1st of the month and Social Security checks just came) "Sister, this brother and I were just discussing the parable of the widow's mite. Do you remember that one?"
Two chunky single sisters are hugging each other.
Caption for picture 2:
"Don't you hate that there is only one brother to every three sisters and only the attractive one's get married? Oh well, more service time will make me happy...more service time will make me happy...more service time will make me happy..."(repeat mantra and fade out)
(And yes, I know that was tacky. )
And a young black boy is talking to an older white man who is seated.
Caption for picture 3:
1) "Sonny, let me tell you about all the new light I've witnessed. Boy, I'm sure glad Armageddon didn't come in 1874/1914/1918/1921/1925/1975"
2) "You mom tells my you like to play video games. Why don't you invite all your friends from school over and then tell them your XBOX is broken and pull out the Bible Stories Book?"
O.k....all smart-aleckness aside, I think we ALL know what's wrong w/ those pics. Presents a nice fairy tale, though.
