Interesting thoughts. Honestly, as probably the case with many witnesses, I usually fail to read the 'context' of the 'proof texts' they use to support certain points.

Demons and Inanimate Objects
by VM44 inthe watchtower has published articles telling people not to shop at thrift stores, salvation army stores, etc, because the items purchased might have demons attached!.
experiences have been published by the wt, and particularly the awake!,where people are reported to have been bothered after bringing the used items home.
to only relief was after the objects were taken out and burned, usually after several attempts when the object would not catch fire!.

Yeah, I remember this one well. You always heard the stories of the 'demons' who attacked the family who bought the chess set that had a cross on top of the king, that kind of bullshit. I know weird things happen, 'cuz I've witnessed them personally, but to think that something as powerful as a demon can only be brought into your home on an inanimate object is stupid. What, it can levitate a bed 90 degrees but has to hitch a ride on a dress? C'mon! I remember one time I had checked out a book on magic from the library one time (you know, how to do card tricks and stuff like that) and that night my mom had a bad dream and made me take the book back the next day, claiming it was the 'demons on the book' that made her have a nightmare.
The paradox is that the counseled you not to buy stuff from garage sales because it might be 'possessed', but at the same time discouraged having an education or a 'real' job so you could only AFFORD stuff from garage sales.....lol. Does anyone else think it interesting that in the '66 WT quoted by Sally that they actually used the word 'haunted' and indicated that some demons like to 'haunt' certain houses? That just sounded weird to me.

Good job!!!! And yes, they are addictive - I'm getting the design together for my third one, and I thought I'd only get one. Oh well. And no, they don't really hurt. It's more of an annoyance - but it's worth it.

shakedowns
by bavman inhas anyone else noticed shakedowns in their area.
in my state whole service committee's (presiding overseer, service overseer, sectretary) have been replaced in many congregations including our's.
also, at the green bay convention and in many talks locally it seems there is a lot of hammering on the faithful and discreet slave.

I was in a congregation in the mid-80's that was completely dissolved and we all had to drive 30 miles to our assigned congregation. That cong had to send a brother down to conduct the bookstudy on Tuesday nights as well. The entire body of elders and MS's was deleted (with the exception of my dad, who somehow managed to stay out of the all the BS that was going on). Most of those involved are now either df'd or inactive. Wasn't aware that this was going on in a much larger scale at this time, though.

Why do you think the JW's are seeing (supposed) growth in the former Soviet Union? Those people need one autocratic organization to control their lives now that Communism and the totalitarian tacticks of the USSR is kaput......

how much did you give up?
by zen nudist ini completely lost it and could not keep the tears back and my throat choked with grattitude to these men and my country.
i had missed feeling patriotic soooo much!
pasted from another thread...but got me thinking, how much did you stop doing as a jw, not because you really believed it but because you could not do it and still be a jw?

As the others raised in the truth, I lost my youth and all the things associated with it.
But to answer your question, many of the things I did or didn't do I did, not because I agree w/ it, but because that's what the Society said to do. Especially the 'minor' things like birthdays, holidays, entertainment. My inability to reconcile many of these things with the Bible, coupled with the lack of love apparent, made me realize that it was an organization of control, rather than a loving organization teaching the true 'gospel'.
See, what the WT doesn't understand is that if they were a little more relaxed on some of the truly minor issues, they could still control the masses w/ the major fear tactics like Armageddon. There would be far fewer dissatisfied people in the org, fewer would leave or be df'd, and they would make more money off of them.

Just my 2 cents. I agree that with all the extraneous stuff she probably needs to see a therapist. I remember going through that stage where it was 'cool' to love everything bad and to hate everything wholesome, even though I really didn't feel that way. I definitely didn't need therapy, just to grow up. BUT, my home life was stable (as stable as it can be in a JW home...lol) and I didn't exhibit a lot of the other signs that she is. I didn't see this in any of the replies, (maybe I just missed it), but also watch her association. It may be that she's getting a lot of this from her friends.

Big Tex,
Haven't seen the movies, but I've heard they really suck compared to the books. The plot takes several books to develop, so what you may term 'big holes' (which are somewhat evident in the book as well) are filled in later and make sense. Some of the books are a little cheesy in parts, but overall I found them quite entertaining.
LABD, interesting background on the 'rapture', by the way.....
