Whack jobs? Dude, most of us are simply asking that a person with a history with mental illness and a green card can't walk in and buy a semi-automatic pistol capable of firing 5 rounds a second. I don't think that's a "whack" mentality. I think we need more comprehensive gun laws. Enough of the "you're either with us or against us" mentalities. It's time to really think these issues through. Stop being so worried about a bunch of gunless, wimpy Dems. Are they really that scary? You're the one with the frickin' guns! And I love it when people say "if only the other VT kids had guns, they could've fought back". Uhhhh. Whatever. Are you nuts? Can you imagine what the keggers in the dorm rooms would be like if the kids were armed? There'd be 10 deaths a month from drunk kids playing Russian roulette. Yeah. That's real smart. Give a bunch of drunk 18 year olds raised on violent video gangs and gangsta videos all the guns they want. Solves everything. Geez. Another quote that makes me laugh: "An armed society is a polite society" Really? We're armed, and we ain't very polite. Guns just make an impolite world more deadly. That's it.

Gun control logic
by Gregor inthe v tech shooter bought his guns legally.
gun control laws don't stop this kind of determined killer anywhere in the world.
the defenseless victims couldn't carry a gun legally on campus if they had one.

Haven't been on this board in a while, but this VT massacare has got me pretty upset.
I've debated countless times with gun lovers over gun control. There logic is so deeply flawed. Let me point out what I think are a few big obvious realities they miss:
1. less guns = less gun deaths. There's really no way around this fact. Every country with strict gun laws has less people dying of guns. It's real simple. I'm not sure what the big disconnect is on this. England, Italy, Sweden, Canada, they all have minimal gun deaths. They have plenty of "criminals" who have supposed "access to the black market"...yet for some reason, they don't have the gun rampages we do. Interesting, no?
Sure, people get murdered. You can't prevent that. But for god's sakes, killing somebody with an axe and killing a bunch of people with an AR-15 are two different things entirely. An axe has a purpose outside of being purely engineered to kill as many people as possible. I"m not talking about preventing the unpreventable. I'm saying prevent the preventable.
2. "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" - True, but guns make killing lots of people very easily. And let's face it, guns have one purpose, to kill. You can't cut your steak with them, you can't hammer your nails in with them, you can't scratch your ass with them, etc. At least you have a fighting chance with a hammer or a knife. I'd rather face a knife than a gun any day (I've faced both in my life, mind you, I"m not just making this shit up).
3. "Oh, if only the students were armed, or the teachers were armed, they could've prevented it from happening." That's retarded. That's all we need, shoot outs at the kegger and pep rallys whenever some wanna be gangsta wants to impress a chick. Forget Cho, there'd be plenty of dead VT students just from campus shootouts.
It also reminds me of the cold war logic, MAD, mutually assured destruction. Like pointing a bunch of nukes at each other made the world a safe place. People will say "oh but see how nuclear war never happened!". Well, imagine if it did. Hell, it almost. The solution isn't arming kids, it's asking ourselves this: How the hell does a person with a green card and a history of mental illness get 2 guns and over 1000 rounds of ammunition? And we still don't think there is a problem?

speed reading - what's the technique?
by Spectrum inthere is so much good stuff on this forum to read and not so much time to read it all.
i once knew a girl that could read a page from a novel in about 15 seconds and understand it.
i had a teacher who could read a page by looking at the centre of the sentence and somehow absorb the words on either side and just go down the page at lighting speed.

I hate to sound like a snob, but I think a lot of it is hereditary/genetic. There are techniques, but some people are more pre-disposed towards it than others. My reading comprehnsion and capability is far better than my math skillz however. I think there may have been a tradeoff.
When I was a kid, about 3rd grade. They did a lot of weird tests on me to determine just how fast I could speed-read/comprehend. I think my reading comprehension at that time was that of a 17 year old, and I was only about 8 or 9 years old. My speed reading capability was remarkable, and still is. They put me in a special class (yes, special ed...go ahead and laugh) and did more tests...etc...I felt like a lab rat at times. I guess I had some skillz.

I lost my job at Microsoft today...thanks to a wonderful economy...
by dolphman infor the last few years, many of my friends have lost their jobs and have not found suitable replacements.
most are on unemployment, and those whose unemployment has run out are simply eeking out some meager existence doing something they don't like, that doesn't pay well, and doesn't help to really reduce the stress they face every day.. well, to be honest, i used to laugh my ass off at them.
ha ha ha i would say.

Thanks for the support. I'm more shocked simply because I just didn't expect it. I'm going to ride out my severance package for as long as possible and work on film and other art projects I've been wanting to do. Hopefully, I can establish some sort of freelance self-employment deal so I don't have to worry about what CEOs need to do to cut costs. I did an independent film that made it into a few festivals. It led to me getting financing for a couple of new scripts I wrote. We'll see what happens. here's my last film's website. I shot this thing for a 1000.00 dollars. http://www.mcbeerbong.com

Well, to be honest, I used to LAUGH MY ASS OFF at them. HA HA HA I would say. I work at MICROSOFT. NOBODY has ever been layed off from here. We're the number 1 software company in the world. Nobody can touch us here. Everyday this belief would be reinforced by profit and revenue reports. Granted, stock hasn't gone up in a while, and we were feeling something of a squeeze, but nothing major. We still have free soda and free trips to the movies. Usually, a group just re-orgs into another group more suitable for changing technological needs.
Well, the unthinkable happened. My whole org simply got eliminated. Everybody with my job description got cut, not to mention a bunch of other people.
I once told myself that if this ever happened, I would have undeniable proof that the economy sucks. Well folks, the economy SUCKS, despite what Sean Hannity likes to tell you.
These 1 million new jobs Bush has created will not replace the wonderful benefits, work/life balance, and sheer salary (57,000 a year) that I used to make. They simply won't cut it.
I just recently decided to not vote for Bush, and this only reinforces the fact that I made the right decision and am actually living in reality. Don't be fooled by the republicans saying the economy is going good. Most of the people I worked with are Bush supporters. They voted for him in 2000 because they believed him to be a friend of big business (ie Microsoft). Well, from the looks on their faces, especially the ones locked in their offices crying, I can tell you who they're voting for now.
Thanks Bush...

Israeli Spy at the Pentagon...
by dolphman inhas anyone heard anymore on this issue.
someone in the upper ranks of the pentagon was working for israel, giving them memos on our possible actions against tehran.
the problem is, the person is also suspected of being the conduit from which we recieved those bs reports of iraq developing nuclear weapon technology.. it shows how uncomfortably close we are with israel's politics and policys, and how they can manipulate us.

Wow. I'm impressed Satanus. Not that I have anything against Jews, but they sure no where to position their best chess pieces. It's scary to think a special office was created simply for the task of coming up with evidence to justify a war with Iraq. Something which, of course, serves Israels purposes greatly.

Has anyone else heard this prediction?
by Mulan ini heard a discussion on fox news last night about a surprise at the republican convention this week.
i cannot remember the analyst's name but he was basing it on several factors: dick cheney has cancelled all public appearances scheduled for this week (tv and radio interviews, etc)john mccain is speaking at the convention tonight (monday)tomorrow john mccain leaves ny to join the president in the west for two days of personal appearances and campaigningboth of them return to ny for the convention and the acceptance speech on thursdaylots of buzz at the convention about a big surprise coming during the week.. the prediction is that cheney will announce that his doctor has advised him that his health may not stand another 4 years as vp and that bush will announce john mccain as his running mate.
did anyone else hear this?

I just read it was an Air Force officer with the last name of Franklin. He's apparently tied to Wolfowitz. I don't think he's an arab-israeli, but rather simply an Air Force officer that was at one time stationed in Tel Aviv.
